Taxonomy & naming
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma was formally described by Wu Tiejun, Lihui Xiu and Jian Yang in 2016 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 27, issue 3, pages 275–282). The type locality is Hunan Province, southern China. Diagnostic characters distinguishing it from its congeners include 8 branched dorsal-fin rays, 82–100 lateral-line scales, a relatively wider mouth, and a lower lip that is separated into two parts — features that give it its specific epithet.
The genus Liniparhomaloptera belongs to the family Balitoridae (the river loaches or hillstream loaches), now often placed within the broader superfamily Cobitoidea. Some authorities have treated the broader hillstream loach assemblage under the family Gastromyzontidae; the 2016 original description placed macrostoma in that family, but current consensus trends toward Balitoridae or a refined family arrangement — the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) remains the authority on the valid placement. The genus name references its affinity with Parhomaloptera, another hillstream loach genus; the prefix marks it as a divergent lineage within that group.
Morphology
Like all members of its genus, Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma is highly flattened dorsoventrally — a body plan that works as a passive sucker in fast current. The underside is broad and smooth, with the pectoral and pelvic fins splayed horizontally to press the fish against the substrate, and the entire ventral profile — fins and belly together — forms a planing surface that generates hydrodynamic downforce in the flow. The wide mouth, singled out in both the common and scientific name, is equipped for rasping biofilm and algae from rock: the lower lip is divided into two lobes, giving the fish fine control over the surface it grazes.
The body is nearly scaleless to the touch — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded — which matters medically because the fish absorbs dissolved substances readily across its skin. Coloration is cryptic: brown to olive-tan with irregular darker mottling that matches wet rock and gravel, providing camouflage in the stony headwaters it calls home. Mature size, inferred from the congener L. disparis (which reaches about 3 in standard length), is probably in a similar range; precise data for macrostoma itself are sparse.
Habitat
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma is native to fast-flowing headwater streams of Hunan Province, southern China — clear, cool, highly oxygenated water racing over bare rock and coarse gravel. This is a strictly rheophilic (fast-water) environment: dissolved oxygen is near saturation, the current is strong enough to hold the fish pinned against the substrate if it relaxes its grip, and the water is cold relative to lowland tropical rivers. The closely related L. disparis tolerates a temperature range of roughly 68–75 °F; the same window is inferred for macrostoma given its shared habitat type.
Water chemistry in southern Chinese headwaters is typically soft and moderately acidic to near-neutral (pH around 6.5–8.0), with very low dissolved organics. The substrate is clean rock, gravel and sand, kept scoured by the current; fine silt and still backwaters are essentially absent from the microhabitat this genus exploits. Sunlight penetrates to the streambed, fuelling the biofilm and microalgae that the fish feeds on.
Feeding
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the thin layer of algae, diatoms, periphyton and microscopic invertebrates that coat current-swept rocks in clear, sunlit headwater streams. Its wide, divided lower lip and subterminal mouth are morphological adaptations for this scraping style of feeding, allowing it to process the rock surface efficiently even in strong current.
In the aquarium, providing adequate food is the single greatest challenge this species presents. A bare or newly established tank offers nothing to graze, and fish starved of biofilm decline quickly — this is the most common cause of loss with hillstream loaches in the hobby. A mature tank with algae-coated rocks and glass panels is the baseline requirement; supplements include blanched greens (cucumber, zucchini, spinach), spirulina wafers and sinking algae tablets, and small frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and Tubifex. The fish should be given access to well-lit surfaces where biofilm grows naturally, not just a clean glass box.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about mating behavior in Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma specifically. Data from the congener L. disparis and from other Balitoridae hillstream loaches suggest that males and females in breeding condition are best distinguished by the fuller abdomen of gravid females, and possibly by minor differences in body shape. In the wild, spawning in hillstream loaches is understood to be tied to seasonal conditions — water level, temperature and clarity can all shift with monsoon rains — but the specific triggers for this genus in its southern Chinese headwater streams have not been described in the literature.
In a mature, strongly-oxygenated river-style aquarium, a few hillstream loach species have been induced to spawn when conditions closely mimic the natural seasonal cycle, but this is uncommon. Definitive pairing requires a group of individuals rather than a single pair, since sex is difficult to determine externally in a quiescent fish.
Breeding
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented degree, and for most hillstream loach genera in this family the honest assessment is the same: captive spawning is rarely achieved outside specialist setups. The genus is inferred to be an egg-scatterer or egg-burier among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — a pattern consistent with the closely related L. disparis, which reportedly buries eggs seasonally in similar habitat with an incubation of around three days.
Achieving these conditions in a tank is theoretically possible in a mature, high-flow, cool river-aquarium where biofilm and fine gravel are present, but documented spawning accounts for this particular species do not exist in the accessible literature. Keepers should regard breeding as an unlikely bonus of good husbandry rather than a planned outcome.
In the aquarium
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma is a specialist's fish, rarely appearing in the trade, and it demands conditions that differ sharply from a standard warm, still community tank. The non-negotiables are strong, steady water flow (a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is a baseline), high dissolved oxygen (powerheads or venturi aeration help), cool water in the 68–75 °F range, and a mature tank with algae and biofilm coating every rock surface. Without all of these, the fish fails to thrive: it suffocates in warm stagnant water and starves in a clean, bare tank.
Because its skin is near-scaleless and highly permeable, it is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of standard aquarium medications — a fact that becomes critically important because hillstream loaches can be early casualties when ich enters a tank. Treat at reduced dosages only, preferably with copper-free products, and observe closely. A group of four or more individuals is preferable to a single specimen, both for behavioral reasons and because the fish is naturally gregarious on the rock faces it grazes. The tank itself should be aquascaped with smooth river stones and coarse gravel over a sand base, with plenty of unobstructed flow lanes and surfaces on which biofilm can develop.
Conservation
Liniparhomaloptera macrostoma has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. The species is known from Hunan Province, southern China — a relatively restricted type locality in the hill-stream drainage of that region — and its range outside of this area is not documented in the available literature. A narrow endemic restricted to headwater streams is inherently vulnerable to any degradation of those streams: siltation from agriculture or construction, water abstraction, hydropower development and pollution are the routine threats facing small-stream hill-fish in southern China, and such species frequently prove to be more geographically restricted than initially recognized.
The aquarium trade in this species is essentially absent — it is a scientifically described specialist whose morphology and care demands limit its commercial appeal, and wild collection for the hobby does not appear to be a significant pressure. The primary conservation concern, should the species face one, would be habitat degradation within its native stream network, not collecting. A formal IUCN assessment with range mapping would be valuable for any management planning.
