Taxonomy & naming
The species was formally described in 2016 by Lalramliana, Lalhlimpuia, Solo and Vanramliana, who placed it in the genus Physoschistura as Physoschistura chhimtuipuiensis, in a paper in the journal Zootaxa. Nemacheilid taxonomy has been reshuffled repeatedly over the past two decades as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken apart on the basis of anatomy and, increasingly, molecular data; this species has since been moved into the genus Mustura, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here for valid names — lists it as Mustura chhimtuipuiensis.
The species epithet refers to its type locality: it was collected from a stream connected to the Chhimtuipui (also spelled Kaladan) river system in Mizoram, the state in India's far north-east that borders Myanmar. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that is still being actively described — new species turn up regularly from small Himalayan and Indo-Burmese streams that have barely been surveyed.
Morphology
Mustura chhimtuipuiensis is a small, slender nemacheilid built along the same lines as most stone loaches: an elongate, rounded body, a flattened belly suited to holding station on the streambed, and a narrow caudal peduncle. The original description notes scales between the pectoral- and pelvic-fin bases that are deeply embedded and sparsely set, an incomplete lateral line running with 56 to 63 pores, a suborbital flap present in males, 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays, and 8+7 branched caudal-fin rays — the kind of fine meristic detail that separates it from closely related Mustura and Physoschistura species in the region.
As in other true loaches, the skin is effectively naked to close inspection, the scales being tiny and deeply set rather than forming an obvious covering, which leaves these fish sensitive to skin damage and to medication in the same way as their better-known botiid and hillstream cousins. No maximum length has been published in the sources reviewed here; nemacheilids of this build are typically small, generally in the range of a few centimetres, but that figure has not been confirmed for this species and should not be assumed.
Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality: a tributary stream of the Kaladan (Chhimtuipui) River in Mizoram, in India's far north-eastern hill country, part of the broader Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. This is classic stone-loach country — cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing hill streams running over rock and gravel, well oxygenated by their own turbulence, in forested terrain far from any large lowland river.
Because the species has been recorded from a single stream system, nothing published describes seasonal variation in its habitat, and no water-chemistry data (temperature, pH) accompanies the original description. Members of this genus and family in the eastern Himalaya and Indo-Burma region generally hold to cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than warm, still conditions, and that is the safest inference here, but specific figures for this species are not available and should be treated as unknown rather than assumed.
Feeding
No diet has been documented for Mustura chhimtuipuiensis in the sources available. Stone and brook loaches of this build are, as a rule, bottom-dwelling micro-predators, working the streambed for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — dislodged from among gravel and stones by the current. There is no reason from its morphology to expect this species to differ from that pattern, but this is an inference from the family, not a documented fact about the species itself.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour for this species. The original description is a taxonomic paper focused on morphology and does not touch on reproduction, and no subsequent aquarium or field observations appear in the sources reviewed. Stone loaches in general are egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding behaviour beyond the act of spawning itself, but specific mating behaviour for Mustura chhimtuipuiensis is undocumented.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Mustura chhimtuipuiensis is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and it does not appear to have entered the aquarium trade at all. The expected mode, based on the family, is that of an egg-scatterer — eggs released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care — but this has not been confirmed for the species itself. Given that it is known from a single stream and has no aquarium history, the honest position is that its reproductive biology is essentially undescribed.
In the aquarium
Mustura chhimtuipuiensis has no aquarium history: it does not appear in the hobby literature, care-sheet sites or the aquarium trade, which is unsurprising for a nemacheilid described in 2016 from a single stream in a remote part of north-eastern India. There is no reliable basis here for stocking numbers, tank size, water parameters or feeding regimen specific to this species.
What can be said, by extension from its family and its scaleless-skin morphology shared with other true loaches, is that any stone loach from a fast hill stream should be kept cool and well-oxygenated with strong flow rather than warm and still, and — like its scaleless relatives among the botiids and hillstream loaches — would be expected to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication. That is a general caution based on family traits, not a specific recommendation, since this species is not in the trade.
Conservation
Mustura chhimtuipuiensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from a single tributary of the Kaladan River in Mizoram, and its status is best summarised as data-sparse: a narrow-range endemic from a part of the Indo-Burma hotspot that remains poorly surveyed for freshwater fishes. Range-restricted stream loaches of this kind are typically vulnerable to habitat degradation — deforestation, stream siltation and water diversion in the hill catchments they depend on — but no dedicated conservation assessment or population study has been published for this species, and no aquarium trade pressure is documented.
