Mustura daral is a small, recently described stone loach from the Brahmaputra drainage of Northeast India, named to science only in 2022 from the Siang River near Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that fills clear, fast-flowing Asian streams with small, bottom-hugging micro-predators most aquarists never hear about. As a species barely a few years old in the literature, it is genuinely data-sparse — there is a solid type description and a place on the Catalog of Fishes, but little else has been published, and it has not yet been evaluated for the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Mustura daral was formally described in 2022 by Rameshori, Chinglemba, Darshan and Vishwanath, with the description published in the journal Zootaxa (volume 5129, issue 2, pages 285–294). The genus Mustura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family — by far the largest of the loach families, encompassing hundreds of species distributed across Asia and into Europe, most of them small, cryptic and confined to individual river systems.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid fish names, lists Mustura daral as a currently valid species. Because the species was described so recently, there is no history of synonymy or generic reshuffling to report yet — unlike many older Nemacheilidae that have moved between Nemacheilus, Schistura, Barbatula and related genera over the decades, M. daral has so far had only the one combination since its description.

Morphology

The type series consists of a holotype measuring 2.5 in standard length (an adult male) and a set of paratypes ranging from 2–3 in standard length, giving a picture of a genuinely small loach, well under 4 in even as an adult. As a member of Nemacheilidae it shares the family's general body plan: an elongate, cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth suited to picking food off the streambed, and reduced or absent scaling on much of the body — a trait that, as in other loaches, makes the skin more exposed and more sensitive to handling and medication than in scaled fishes.

Beyond the measurements and type locality recorded in the original description, little morphological detail has been widely reported for this species outside the primary literature, and no separate account of colour pattern or fin structure was available in the sources consulted here. As with many newly described stream endemics, a fuller picture of its distinguishing features exists in the taxonomic paper itself but has not yet filtered into secondary or aquarium literature.

Habitat

The type locality is the Siang River at Pasighat, in the Brahmaputra drainage of Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India (approximately 28°01'57"N, 95°22'05"E), at an elevation of about 144 metres. The type series was collected from medium to fast flowing water running over a bed of sand, cobbles and pebbles — classic stone-loach habitat: clear, well-oxygenated, moving water with a hard, structured substrate rather than the soft mud or leaf litter favoured by many lowland fish.

No specific water-temperature data for this species were found in the sources consulted, but related Nemacheilidae from similar hill-stream habitats in the region typically inhabit cool-to-moderate flowing water, commonly in the range of roughly 64–79 °F, rather than warm, still, tropical conditions. Given the species' foothill elevation and fast-water habitat, it should be treated as a cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated running-water fish, not a warm still-water species.

Feeding

No diet information specific to Mustura daral was found in the available sources. However, Nemacheilidae as a family are consistently reported as micro-predators: bottom-foraging fish that pick small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey — off sand, gravel and cobble in fast-flowing streams. There is every reason to expect M. daral follows this pattern, given its type habitat over sand, cobbles and pebbles in medium-to-fast current.

In the aquarium, related stone loaches accept small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, small invertebrates) readily and often ignore dry flake in favour of anything that sinks and resembles natural prey. Until species-specific data exists, this general Nemacheilidae feeding pattern is the safest guide for anyone encountering this fish.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Mustura daral specifically; the species is known to science only from its 2022 type description, which addresses taxonomy and morphology rather than reproductive biology. Data on this point is genuinely sparse rather than simply unresearched by us.

Across Nemacheilidae generally, spawning is understood to involve a twisting dance between a male and female over open substrate, with a batch of eggs — commonly cited as on the order of 10 to 20 at a time in related small stone loaches — released and scattered rather than deposited in a nest or guarded site. There is no evidence for any form of pair-bonding, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour in this family, and nothing in the record suggests M. daral would be an exception.

Breeding

Consistent with its family, Mustura daral should be assumed to be an egg-scatterer: eggs released over gravel or sand in fast-flowing water, with no parental care from either parent afterward. This matches the general Nemacheilidae pattern of a brief spawning dance followed by broadcast release of a small batch of eggs, after which the adults take no further part and the fry — on hatching — begin grazing biofilm and infusoria among the gravel before graduating to micro-invertebrate prey as juveniles.

There is no record of Mustura daral being bred in the aquarium, and given how recently it was described and how little is published about it even in the wild, that is unsurprising. As with the great majority of small Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches, the honest expectation for a keeper is that this species is rarely or never bred in captivity; anyone encountering it should treat it as a wild-origin fish to be kept, not propagated.

In the aquarium

Mustura daral is not an established aquarium fish — it was described from a handful of scientific specimens collected for taxonomic study, not from the ornamental trade, and there is no body of hobbyist experience with the species to draw on. Anyone who does encounter it should extend it the same baseline care as other small Nemacheilidae stone loaches: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water over a sand-and-gravel or cobble substrate, with strong filtration to replicate its riffle habitat, since it comes from medium-to-fast current over sand, cobbles and pebbles rather than still water.

As with other loaches, the near-absent scaling typical of Nemacheilidae means such fish tend to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose if this species were ever kept. Given the total absence of husbandry data, the most honest guidance is restraint: this is a fish for careful, informed keepers working from a scientific specimen record, not a fish with an established care sheet.

Conservation

Mustura daral has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; it carries no conservation status here beyond Not Evaluated (NE), which is unsurprising for a species only formally described in 2022. Its known range is limited to the type locality on the Siang River at Pasighat in the Brahmaputra drainage of Arunachal Pradesh, and no broader distribution survey was found in the sources consulted.

As with many recently described, single-catchment stream endemics in the Eastern Himalaya and Brahmaputra drainage, the species' true range and population status remain essentially unknown outside the original taxonomic collection. Until a dedicated assessment or wider survey is published, the responsible position is to note the data gap rather than to guess at a conservation status or trend.
