Taxonomy & naming
Plesiomyzon baotingensis was described by Zheng and Chen in 1980 from specimens collected in the Baoting area of Wuzhou Prefecture, Guangxi Province, southern China. The genus Plesiomyzon was erected at the same time to accommodate the new species and, so far as current records show, it remains the sole member of the genus — a monotypic taxon. The name is valid per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), and no synonyms or subsequent combinations have been recorded.
The species belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream loaches — the broad assemblage of flattened, rheophilic cypriniform fishes distributed across South and East Asia. Within Balitoridae, Plesiomyzon is placed among the gastromyzontine or related balitorine lineages characterised by the ventral adhesive apparatus formed by the pectoral and pelvic fins. The original description was published in Chinese ichthyological literature; independent verification against the primary description is therefore limited, and the species remains little-studied outside its source region.
Morphology
Like all hillstream loaches, Plesiomyzon baotingensis is dorsoventrally flattened — broader than tall, with a streamlined dorsal surface and a wide, flat belly pressed close to the substrate. It reaches approximately 2–2.5 in in standard length. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and positioned horizontally to form a functional sucker on the ventrum, allowing the fish to lock onto smooth rock surfaces in raging current. The body is effectively scaleless to the touch; the integument offers little protection against chemical agents, and the species should be treated accordingly.
The head is broad and slightly depressed, with the mouth positioned ventrally and equipped for rasping biofilm from hard substrates. An erectile suborbital spine — the defining botiid/balitorid trait — is present below the eye. The overall build is that of an animal engineered for high-velocity water: streamlined, adhesive, and low-slung, with all projecting structures reduced to minimise drag.
Habitat
Plesiomyzon baotingensis is native to hill streams of the Baoting/Wuzhou region in Guangxi Province, southern China. It inhabits fast-flowing, shallow torrents and riffles over rocky substrates — the rheophilic microhabitat that defines the hillstream loach guild. The water here is cool (approximately 59–72 °F), crystal clear, and saturated with dissolved oxygen from continuous surface agitation. Substrates are clean rock, pebble and coarse gravel, typically carpeted with a thin but dense layer of periphyton (biofilm) that forms the primary food base.
This is not a warm, still, tropical-river environment. The streams of upland Guangxi are fed by rainfall draining granite and limestone hills, running fast and cold year-round. Flow velocity, oxygen saturation and substrate cleanliness are the habitat axes that matter; turbidity, warm temperatures or still pools are conditions the fish does not naturally encounter and does not tolerate well.
Feeding
Plesiomyzon baotingensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it rasps diatoms, filamentous algae, periphyton and associated micro-invertebrates from the surface of rock using its ventrally positioned, adapted mouth. This diet requires a constant supply of mature biofilm — a substrate quality that only develops on rocks and hardscape that have been colonised over weeks and months in a well-lit, nutrient-cycling aquarium.
The most important feeding fact for any keeper is that this fish will starve in a new or bare tank. Biofilm takes time to establish; a newly set-up aquarium, or one with polished or frequently scrubbed surfaces, simply does not provide enough food. Supplementary feeding with blanched spinach, courgette and spirulina wafers, along with small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops placed in the current, helps bridge the gap — but the tank must first be mature, with algae-covered rocks, before the fish can thrive.
Mating
No detailed account of mating behaviour in Plesiomyzon baotingensis exists in the available literature. From what is known of related hillstream loach genera, the sexes are typically differentiated in mature adults by body depth — females tending to be plumper across the abdomen when ripe — but the differences are subtle and difficult to read in juveniles or thin fish.
In the wild, spawning in rheophilic balitorids is thought to be triggered by seasonal cues: changes in water temperature, day length and flow velocity associated with the transition from dry to wet season. Whether Plesiomyzon follows a similar pattern is undocumented. The torrential, cool, highly oxygenated habitat of the species presents an additional challenge to any attempt at captive reproduction.
Breeding
Plesiomyzon baotingensis is not bred in home aquaria. There is no record in the scientific or hobby literature of captive spawning. As a hillstream loach it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the documented mode in those Balitoridae genera (such as Sewellia) where breeding has been observed, where eggs are deposited among stones or in crevices in fast current, hatch passively, and receive no further attention from the adults.
For most hillstream loach genera, including Plesiomyzon, the honest position is that captive breeding is essentially unknown. Recreating the cool, high-flow, seasonally variable torrent environment in a home aquarium is technically demanding, and this species is not commercially traded, so there is no organised effort to achieve it. Keepers should acquire this fish with the expectation of keeping, not breeding, it.
In the aquarium
Plesiomyzon baotingensis is not a species that appears in the aquarium trade, and there is no established keeping record to draw on. Any keeper who obtains it should treat it as they would any cool-water hillstream loach: as a specialist requiring conditions that depart significantly from the standard tropical community aquarium.
The essentials are cool water (59–72 °F), very strong flow — ideally produced by a powerhead or wavemaker in addition to the main filter — and very high dissolved oxygen. A large surface-area filter or sump, combined with surface agitation, is necessary; hillstream loaches suffocate when oxygen falls. The tank must be mature, with rocks, slate and smooth hardscape colonised by biofilm and algae; this is the food base, and without it the fish will slowly starve regardless of supplementary feeding. Being effectively scaleless, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any chemical treatment. It must not be mixed with warm-water species. This is a fish for a cool-water biotope or hillstream specialist tank — not a general community setup.
Conservation
Plesiomyzon baotingensis is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Like many Balitoridae from southern China and Indochina, it is restricted to a narrow geographic range and dependent on the clean, fast, cold hill streams that are being degraded by agricultural run-off, dam construction, sand extraction and deforestation across the region.
The species is not part of the aquarium trade to any significant degree, so collecting pressure is not a documented concern. The greater risk is habitat attrition in its native range: upland streams in Guangxi have been subject to increasing agricultural and hydroelectric development pressure since the 1980s, consistent with the species' threatened status.
