Taxonomy & naming
Erromyzon kalotaenia was described in 2012 by Junxing Yang, Maurice Kottelat, Yiyu Yang and Yiyu Chen, and it belongs to the family Balitoridae — the true hillstream and torrent loaches of Asia. The genus Erromyzon is placed within Balitoridae (sometimes treated as subfamily Balitorinae within a broader Cyprinoidei arrangement), distinguished by a strongly flattened body, a ventral adhesive disc formed by the paired fins and modified lower lip, and by the highly modified pectoral and pelvic fins that allow the fish to maintain station on smooth rock in fierce current. The genus is endemic to southern China and parts of Indochina, and all its members share the same rheophilic, torrent-adapted body plan.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for valid names within Cobitoidea — a group whose taxonomy has been in flux for decades, with many former Balitoridae genera reassigned as molecular and morphological work has refined the family-level boundaries. Erromyzon stands as a valid genus under current arrangements, and kalotaenia is its specific epithet. No common trade name has been established in the English-language hobby; the fish occasionally appears in specialist literature and specialist importers under the genus name alone.
Morphology
Erromyzon kalotaenia is a small fish, reaching approximately 1.5–2.5 in in standard length — typical for the genus. The body is strikingly flattened dorsoventrally, with a broad, depressed head and a streamlined profile that presses almost flush to the rock surface. The paired fins — pectoral and pelvic — are enlarged, horizontally splayed and held flat against the substrate, forming together with the modified lip a sucker-like adhesive disc that allows the fish to cling to smooth stone even in strong current. The dorsal and caudal fins are modest and functional, used for manoeuvring rather than sustained swimming.
The specific epithet kalotaenia refers to the species' colour patterning. From the Greek kalos (beautiful) and taenia (band or stripe), the name indicates a banded or striped pattern that distinguishes this species within the genus. The skin is largely smooth to the touch — scales are tiny and embedded — making the fish vulnerable to medication and handling in the same way as other near-scaleless loaches. There is no prominent erectile suborbital spine in Balitoridae members (that feature belongs to the botiid loaches); instead the orbital region is typically more exposed and the snout blunt and flattened for grazing.
Habitat
Erromyzon kalotaenia is endemic to cool, fast-flowing mountain streams of southern China. Its natural habitat is the rheophilic extreme: boulder-strewn and bedrock channels where water runs clear, cold and rapid over rock, with dissolved oxygen close to saturation and little accumulated sediment. Water temperatures in these upland streams typically fall between 16 and 72 °F — distinctly cooler than the lowland tropical conditions most aquarium fish come from — and the fish cannot tolerate the warm, still water of a standard tropical community tank.
The water chemistry of granite and limestone hill-stream catchments in southern China tends toward moderate hardness and a pH ranging from roughly 6.5 to 7.5, with very low nutrient loads and high clarity. The substrate is predominantly bare rock, gravel and coarse sand, with biofilm — the thin crust of algae, diatoms, bacteria and organic detritus — coating every submerged surface. That biofilm is the foundation of the food web in these streams, and for Erromyzon it is the primary food source.
Feeding
Erromyzon kalotaenia is an obligate aufwuchs grazer: in nature it rasps biofilm, algae and diatoms continuously from rock surfaces using a broad, downward-facing mouth adapted for scraping. It does not pursue prey in open water and is not a particle feeder in the way many loaches are. Supplemental items — small invertebrates, worm fragments, detrital particles — are taken opportunistically from the biofilm mat, but the rock surface itself is the meal.
In the aquarium, feeding this species correctly is the single most important challenge. The tank must be mature — biofilm takes six to twelve weeks to develop on rock surfaces to a thickness that can sustain grazing — and the rockscape must be large enough and well-lit enough to produce adequate algal growth. Newly set-up tanks offer nothing to rasp and the fish starve within days or weeks. Supplemental foods — frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and mosquito larvae, blanched courgette or cucumber, spirulina wafers — should be offered, but they cannot replace a living biofilm surface. A fish that retreats to a corner and ignores supplemental food is almost certainly starving.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about the mating behaviour of Erromyzon kalotaenia in the wild or in captivity. By analogy with other Balitoridae hillstream loaches, sexing is difficult: in mature fish, females are typically plumper-bodied when in breeding condition, but the two sexes are otherwise similar in external appearance, colouration and fin shape. There is no reliable pre-spawning display documented in the genus.
In the wild, spawning in fast-water Balitoridae is assumed to be tied to seasonal flow and temperature cycles — likely triggered by rising water after rains and slightly elevated temperatures in spring or early monsoon — but the specific cues for Erromyzon kalotaenia are not recorded. The fish likely congregates in suitable gravel-and-stone riffles to spawn without extended courtship or territorial defence.
Breeding
Erromyzon kalotaenia is not documented as having been bred in home aquaria. As a hillstream Balitoridae it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among gravel and stones in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water, with no parental care of eggs or larvae. A few hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been spawned in mature, strongly flowing river tanks by dedicated specialist keepers, and it is not impossible that Erromyzon species could follow a similar pattern in the right conditions, but no verified accounts exist for this species.
The honest picture is that breeding this fish in captivity remains essentially undocumented. The trade in Erromyzon species, to the limited extent it exists, is supplied by wild-caught specimens from southern China, not by aquarium production. A keeper maintaining this fish should do so expecting to enjoy it rather than to breed it, and should regard any spawning as an unexpected bonus rather than a realistic goal.
In the aquarium
Erromyzon kalotaenia is a specialist fish that rewards patient, experienced keepers and punishes common shortcuts. The most critical requirements are cool water, strong continuous flow and a mature biofilm surface — omit any one of them and the fish will decline. Temperature must be kept between 16 and 72 °F; the standard tropical set-point of 75–82 °F will slowly kill it. A powerhead or wavemaker creating strong, oxygenating flow across a rockscape is not optional; without it the fish cannot breathe adequately and cannot feed normally.
The tank should be heavily stocked with smooth river stones, slate and rounded cobbles, arranged to maximise surface area and exposure to flow. These surfaces need to be matured for at least six to eight weeks before the fish is introduced, to allow a dense biofilm to develop. A bright light encourages algal growth on the rocks, supplementing what the fish can graze. Water quality must be excellent — nitrates low, ammonia and nitrite zero — because these clear, fast streams in the wild carry virtually no dissolved waste.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, Erromyzon kalotaenia is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments. If disease treatment is necessary, half-doses and careful product selection are essential — the same precautions that apply to all effectively scaleless loaches. Given its demanding care requirements, this species is suited only to experienced keepers already comfortable running a cool, high-flow hillstream aquarium.
Conservation
Erromyzon kalotaenia has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is currently Not Evaluated (NE). Small-range endemic hillstream loaches from southern China are frequently unassessed because of their narrow distributions, sparse collection records, and the limited resources available for evaluating large numbers of narrowly distributed stream fishes. Many Erromyzon species remain data-deficient by any measure.
The species' natural habitat — cool, clear, fast mountain streams of southern China — is subject to pressures common across the region: agricultural runoff that increases siltation and nutrient loading, water diversion and extraction for irrigation, and in some areas stream-channel modification for flood control or hydro development. These changes degrade the bare-rock, fast-water environment that hillstream loaches depend on. The trade in Erromyzon species is small and sporadic, and wild collection for the aquarium market is unlikely to be a major pressure, but baseline population data do not exist to confirm this. Further survey work and a formal IUCN assessment would significantly clarify the conservation position of this species.
