Protocobitis anteroventris was described by Lan in 2013 within the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches. The genus Protocobitis is a small, recently erected group of cave-dwelling loaches from the karst region of Guangxi, China; by 2025 it held several described species, including P. typhlops and the more recently named P. longicostatus (2024) and P. longibarba (2025), reflecting an active area of ongoing taxonomic discovery in this subterranean fauna.
The species epithet anteroventris refers to the position of the ventral (pelvic) fins, whose origin sits anterior to the origin of the dorsal fin — a diagnostic anatomical detail used to separate it from its close relatives. As with the rest of Cobitoidea, generic limits within this group have shifted repeatedly as new cave populations are surveyed and described; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Protocobitis anteroventris.
Morphology
This is a true loach of the family Cobitidae, and it carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the family, tucked in a groove beneath the eye socket — though in this species the eye itself is gone. Protocobitis anteroventris shows the classic troglomorphic suite seen across its genus: complete loss of functional eyes, loss of body pigment leaving the skin colourless or pale pink, reduced scalation, and degeneration of the ribs. The near-scaleless skin typical of loaches is, in this species, taken to an extreme — an adaptation to a lightless, food-poor cave environment where vision and pigment carry no benefit and are metabolically costly to maintain.

Feeding

The species is best appreciated as a reminder of how specialised loach evolution can become: the same suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin that mark a clown loach in a warm Bornean river turn up here, on a fish that has traded eyes and colour for a life entirely underground.
