Protocobitis typhlops is a blind cave loach known only from a single limestone cave system at Xiaao, in Duan County, Guangxi Province, China. It belongs to the Cobitidae, the family of spined and pond loaches, but it has traded the family's usual sand-sifting river life for total darkness: it has no eyes, almost no pigment, and only a thin line of rudimentary scales along its side. This is not a fish for the hobby — it is a narrow-range troglobite, restricted to a single cave pool, and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Protocobitis typhlops was described by Yang, Chen and Lan in 1993, and it remains the type species of the genus Protocobitis within the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches. The genus is small and entirely restricted to cave systems in southern China; a second species, Protocobitis longibarba, was described more recently from a cave near Hechi City, also in Guangxi, and is distinguished from P. typhlops by details of scalation and barbel length.

The species epithet typhlops is built from the Greek typhlos, "blind," a straightforward description of the fish's most obvious feature. As with many cave-adapted Cobitoidea, taxonomic placement within this group has shifted over the decades as researchers have worked out relationships among the old Botia/Noemacheilus-era genera; Protocobitis has held up as a distinct, valid genus through that process, and the Catalog of Fishes lists no synonymy issue affecting the current combination.

Morphology

The lectotype measures 2 in standard length, and the species is presumed to reach only a few centimetres more than that at most — a small loach even by the standards of the family. Like other Cobitidae it should carry the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its common name, though in this species the spine sits on a body otherwise stripped of most loach hallmarks: the eyes are entirely absent and fully degenerated, the body is depigmented to the point of being colourless or transparent, and true scales survive only as a thin, rudimentary line down the midline of the body rather than covering the flanks.

The skeleton shows the same reduction seen in other obligate cave fishes — the ribs are absent or greatly reduced — and the barbels around the mouth are notably elongated, presumably compensating for the loss of sight with an enhanced sense of touch in total darkness. Observers note the fish using its fins almost like makeshift feet, crawling over sediment rather than swimming freely, a locomotion style shared with several other troglomorphic loaches in the region.

Habitat

Protocobitis typhlops is a troglobite, known only from a limestone cave at Xiaao in Duan County, Guangxi Province, China, at roughly 24°15'N, 107°05'E. It lives in a pool within a limestone depression covering an estimated 10,000 square metres inside an extensive cave system, in clear, still water over a rocky substrate — survey records describe fish found as far as 12 metres into the cave from the surveyed entrance area.

No water chemistry or temperature has been published for the site; cave groundwater in this part of southern China is generally presumed to run cool and stable year-round, but that is an inference rather than a measured fact for this population. This is an entirely freshwater, subterranean species with no known surface population — it is not found in the open rivers and streams that carry most of the family's tropical and temperate members.

Feeding

No diet has been documented for Protocobitis typhlops. Cave systems like this one typically offer little beyond whatever organic material washes or drips in from above, along with any small invertebrates able to survive in permanent darkness, so a benthic omnivore or detritivore diet — picking over sediment for whatever is available — is the reasonable presumption for a cave-restricted Cobitidae, consistent with the sand-sifting, opportunistic feeding habit of its surface-dwelling relatives. That presumption is not confirmed by any published source, and no aquarium feeding data exists because the species is not kept.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Protocobitis typhlops. Cave-restricted fishes of this kind are rarely observed closely enough in the wild to document reproductive behaviour, and the species has essentially no history in captivity, so there is no aquarium record to draw on either. Data here is genuinely sparse rather than simply unrecorded in accessible sources.

Breeding

As with most Cobitidae, the family's general pattern is a spring egg-scatter among plants or over gravel, with no parental care afterward — and several temperate members of the family, including Cobitis and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned under that model. Protocobitis typhlops, however, has no recorded breeding of any kind, in the wild or in captivity; it is not part of the aquarium trade and has not been bred at home. Any statement about its reproductive mode beyond the family-level pattern would be guesswork, so none is offered here.

In the aquarium

Protocobitis typhlops is not an aquarium fish. It is a single-cave endemic with a total known range measured in a single limestone pool, it has no established aquarium history, and its extreme troglomorphic adaptations — no eyes, minimal pigment, reduced scales and skeleton — mark it as a fish evolved for permanent darkness and stable cave conditions that a home tank cannot responsibly replicate. Like other members of Cobitidae it is presumably near-scaleless and sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, but this has not been tested in the species; the more relevant point for any keeper is that it should not be collected or kept at all given its conservation status and minute range.

Conservation

Protocobitis typhlops is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 1996 under criterion D2, reflecting a population restricted to a single, very small location vulnerable to any future threat. The species is endemic to one cave system near Xiaao in Duan County, Guangxi, and is threatened by development and other human activities in the surrounding area — the kind of pressure that can affect groundwater quality and cave access even without any direct collection of the fish itself.

There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species; its conservation risk comes entirely from habitat vulnerability rather than collection pressure. As a single-site cave endemic, its long-term outlook depends on protecting the integrity of that one cave system and the groundwater feeding it.
