Taxonomy & naming
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis was described by Chen in 1978, with the type locality in the Mekong basin of Yunnan Province, southern China. The original combination placed it in Homaloptera, the broad catch-all genus that once contained most of the flattened hillstream loaches of Asia, and it was long known in the literature as Homaloptera yunnanensis — the parentheses around Chen's name record that the species has since been transferred.
The genus Pseudohomaloptera was revalidated by Randall and Page in 2015 as part of a wider reorganisation of Balitoridae, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) now lists Pseudohomaloptera as the valid genus for this species. FishBase records Pseudohomaloptera as containing around six species, all restricted to Southeast Asia and southern China. The family Balitoridae belongs to the order Cypriniformes.
The species epithet yunnanensis means 'from Yunnan', referring to the Chinese province in which the type locality lies. No recognised subspecies or trade names are established.
Morphology
Like all balitorid hillstream loaches, Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis is built for life in fast water. The body is strongly dorso-ventrally flattened, with an almost pancake-like profile when viewed from above. The pectoral and pelvic fins are broad and held horizontally, functioning together with the flattened belly as a suction platform that keeps the fish pressed against rock in powerful current. The eyes are set high on the head; the mouth is inferior — positioned on the underside — with fleshy lips adapted for rasping biofilm off hard substrates.
Maximum recorded size is approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase, with loaches.com citing up to 3 in SL. The skin is essentially scaleless to the touch, with scales deeply embedded and tiny; this near-scaleless condition, shared with most loaches, makes the fish more permeable to dissolved substances — including medications — than a fully scaled species would be.
Colouration is variable and reportedly mood-dependent: the dorsal surface shows dark spots set within lighter rings on a brownish-olive ground, a disruptive pattern that renders the fish nearly invisible against a textured stone background. The caudal fin is slightly forked.
Habitat
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and torrents in the Mekong basin of Yunnan Province, China. It has also been recorded from the Xe Bangfai basin, a Mekong tributary system, in Laos, suggesting a range that extends along connected drainages of the upper and middle Mekong. The species appears broadly restricted to Yunnan despite the broader Mekong drainage spanning several countries.
The natural habitat is clear, cold to cool water rushing over bare rock, cobble and bedstone at altitude — the kind of current that scours surfaces clean of silt and keeps dissolved oxygen near saturation. Water temperatures in the 68–75 °F range characterise the streams where this and related species are found. The substrate is clean rock colonised by biofilm, diatoms and attached algae — the food source that sustains the community of hillstream fishes.
There are no records of this species from still, warm or turbid water. It is a specialist of the rheophilic (fast-current) zone, not a generalist lowland river fish.
Feeding
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis is a biofilm and algae grazer. Using its inferior, fleshy mouth it rasps diatoms, attached algae and the microbial mat known as aufwuchs from the surface of rocks, a feeding mode shared across the Balitoridae. Small invertebrates — midge larvae, microcrustaceans — taken incidentally from the biofilm supplement the essentially plant-based diet.
In an aquarium the greatest risk is starvation. A newly set-up tank or one kept scrupulously clean has almost no biofilm, and a fish accustomed to grazing continuously cannot sustain itself on the occasional algae wafer dropped into the current. Successful keepers maintain a mature, well-lit aquarium in which rocks are visibly colonised by algae and biofilm before the fish are introduced, and they supplement regularly with algae wafers, blanched greens (spinach, zucchini, cucumber) and small frozen foods such as bloodworm, mysis and daphnia. Sinking pellets and mini-wafers are accepted once the fish has settled, but should never be the sole food.
This is emphatically not an easy scavenger or a substitute for a filter-cleaning crew. Treat its diet as its most critical husbandry axis.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive biology of Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis specifically. In the closely related hillstream loaches that have been observed, there is typically little pronounced external sexual dimorphism, though ripe females may appear fuller-bodied when in spawning condition. Courtship behaviour in the group generally involves the male pressing alongside or beneath the female on a rock surface in flowing water.
Given the species' restricted range in montane Mekong tributaries, it is reasonable to suppose that reproduction is tied to seasonal hydrology — spring snowmelt or early monsoon raising flow and lowering temperature slightly — but this is inference from the wider group, not documented observation. No published accounts of mating behaviour in aquaria or the wild are available for this species.
Breeding
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis has not been bred in home aquaria. Like most hillstream loaches, it is an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among stones and gravel in flowing water, with no parental care — the eggs are left to develop among the substrate once spawning is complete. A small number of hillstream loach species (most famously Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam) have been induced to spawn in mature, strongly-flowing river aquaria, but the great majority of genera, including Pseudohomaloptera, have no verified captive breeding record.
This species is unlikely to be available in sufficient numbers or conditioning to attempt breeding routinely. Keepers should not expect to breed it and should approach its care entirely as a long-term display fish.
In the aquarium
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis demands conditions that closely replicate its torrent habitat, and keepers who provide a warm, still, bare tank will lose it quickly. The minimum requirements are: cool water (68–75 °F / 68–75 °F), vigorous circulation achieved with powerheads or a river-manifold return aimed across a rocky substrate, high dissolved oxygen (air stones or surface agitation), and a stable pH between 7.0 and 8.0. The temperature ceiling is hard — this is not a warm-water tropical fish.
The substrate should be smooth river cobble and flat stones of varying size, placed so that surfaces face the flow and are exposed to light. Algae and biofilm must be allowed to colonise these surfaces; resist the urge to scrub the rocks clean. Live plants such as Java moss or Anubias attached to stone provide additional grazing surface and cover. A tight-fitting lid is essential — hillstream loaches can and do climb glass and escape through the smallest gaps.
Because it is near-scaleless, Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive no more than half the standard dose of any treatment, with the tank carefully monitored. It is also potentially vulnerable to ich and other ectoparasites, particularly in suboptimal conditions. The species is reportedly not territorial with conspecifics; keeping a small group of four or more is recommended both for behavioural stability and because individual specimens kept alone rarely thrive. Water quality must remain excellent: high flow alone is insufficient if organic load climbs or oxygen drops.
Conservation
Pseudohomaloptera yunnanensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No dedicated population survey or formal threat assessment is on record. The species' apparent restriction to hill-stream habitats of Yunnan Province and the immediately adjacent Mekong drainages of Laos places it in a landscape facing intensifying pressure: damming of Mekong tributaries for hydropower, sedimentation from deforestation and agricultural expansion, and water abstraction in upland watersheds are all documented threats to hillstream fish communities across southern China and Indochina.
Because it is rarely encountered in the ornamental fish trade and its collection is not a commercial priority, trade pressure is probably low. The greater risk is habitat degradation. A species tied to clear, fast, cold streams with intact riparian zones is intrinsically vulnerable to any catchment disturbance that raises turbidity, lowers oxygen or silts the rock surfaces on which its entire feeding and reproductive ecology depends. A formal IUCN assessment would clarify its range and status; until then the precautionary principle suggests treating this fish as a potential stream endemic of unknown resilience.
