Taxonomy & naming
Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata was first described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1934, based on small juveniles (1–1.5 in total length) collected from northern Thailand; the original description placed the fish in the genus Homaloptera, and the counts Fowler recorded were later found to be incorrect, a problem that hampered subsequent identification for decades. The species subsequently appeared in the literature under the junior synonyms Homaloptera septemmaculata and Balitoropsis sexmaculata, adding to the confusion. A comprehensive revision of the genus Pseudohomaloptera by Randall (2023) in the Journal of Fish Biology formally re-described the species, corrected the fin counts, and described a new related species from Sumatra, bringing taxonomic clarity to the group.
The genus Pseudohomaloptera belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream loaches proper — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. It is closely allied to the torrent-adapted genera of mainland Southeast Asia rather than the Sundaland hillstream fauna, reflecting the species' distribution in peninsular Thai river systems. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) lists Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata (Fowler, 1934) as the accepted name; the parenthetical authority reflects the species' transfer out of the original genus Homaloptera.
Morphology
The Spotted Lizard Loach has the hallmark body plan of a torrent-adapted hillstream balitorid: the body is strongly dorso-ventrally flattened, widest across the pectoral girdle, and tapers to a slender, laterally compressed tail. The pectoral fins are broad, horizontally spread and slightly stiffened, functioning together with the flattened belly as an adherent surface that presses the fish against rock in high-current riffles. It is this lizard-like, splayed posture — combined with its spotted patterning — that earns it the trade name Spotted Lizard Loach.
The body is covered in small, closely overlapping scales, but the skin has a superficially naked appearance and is sensitive to chemical insults in the water. The species reaches only a few centimetres in total length as an adult, making it a genuinely small fish suited to modest aquarium footprints provided the flow and temperature requirements are met. Like other balitorid hillstream loaches, Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata lacks the erectile suborbital spine found in botiid loaches; the defence this genus relies on is speed and adhesion to substrate rather than weaponry.
Habitat
This species is a narrow endemic confined to the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong and Pran Buri river basins in central and western Thailand. Its natural habitat is fast-moving, rocky hill streams with clear, well-oxygenated water, strong current, and shallow riffles where boulders, exposed bedrock and coarse gravel are carpeted by algae and biofilm. The water in these systems is cool by tropical standards, typically running in the range of 68–75 °F (68–75 °F), and is continuously refreshed by upwelling and turbulence that keeps dissolved oxygen near saturation.
Adults inhabit the shallowest, fastest zones — the riffles and runs — where most fish cannot maintain position. The substrate ranges from smooth bedrock to rough-textured boulders; the key requirement is an established layer of biofilm, diatoms and attached algae on which the species grazes. Still or slow-moving water, elevated temperatures, low oxygen or organic enrichment from agricultural or urban runoff are all inimical to the species.
Feeding
Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer in the wild: it rasps diatoms, algae filaments and the associated microfauna — tiny invertebrates, meiofauna, fine organic detritus — from the surface of rocks using a subterminal mouth adapted for suction-feeding against hard substrate. In the stream, small insect larvae and microcrustaceans supplement this biofilm diet when they are encountered during foraging sweeps across the rock face.
In the aquarium, the Spotted Lizard Loach must have access to a mature, algae-bearing rockscape — this is not optional. In a newly-established or scrubbed-clean tank it will starve within weeks, because the biofilm carpet it depends on simply does not exist yet. Supplement with small amounts of blanched greens (spinach, courgette, cucumber), high-quality algae wafers and sinking micro-pellets, and occasional portions of small frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brine shrimp. The fish feeds primarily on rock surfaces, not from the water column, so food must be delivered to the substrate in areas of strong flow where the fish naturally forages.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about reproductive behaviour in Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata specifically. By analogy with the broader hillstream balitorid radiation, spawning is presumed to be tied to seasonal changes in stream hydrology — increases in flow, slight drops in temperature, and elevated oxygen availability associated with the monsoon and post-monsoon period — that trigger ripening and spawning activity. External sex differences, if any, likely follow the pattern seen in related genera: females may become noticeably fuller-bodied when gravid, but at other times the sexes are externally similar and difficult to distinguish with confidence.
Reproduction in hillstream loaches of this type is thought to involve egg deposition among stones and gravel in high-flow zones, with the fertilised eggs resting in crevices and on rough substrate surfaces. No detailed field study of mating behaviour in Pseudohomaloptera appears to exist as of the most recent published revision.
Breeding
Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata is not reliably bred in home aquaria. Like most hillstream balitorids, it is an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care; the eggs are left to develop in the oxygen-rich current. A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature aquaria with very strong, sustained current, but these are exceptions and typically require considerable experience, a purpose-built high-flow setup, and a well-conditioned group of adult fish held for an extended period.
For Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata there are no documented aquarium breeding accounts in the published or widely-reported hobby literature. The honest expectation is that this fish will not spawn in a home tank; keepers should approach it as a species to observe and maintain rather than breed. Should a well-matured, high-flow river tank containing a group of conditioned adults produce eggs, they would be small adhesive eggs resting among stones, with no subsequent parental involvement.
In the aquarium
The Spotted Lizard Loach is a specialist that fails rapidly in the wrong conditions and thrives in the right ones. The right ones are defined by three non-negotiable requirements: cool water (68–75 °F; do not push it into warm tropical conditions), very strong, sustained current (a flow rate of 10× tank volume per hour is a reasonable starting point), and a mature tank with biofilm-covered rocks (the fish's food supply — without it, the loach starves). A bare tank, a newly-cycled tank, or a tank running at 79–82 °F with a low-flow filter is a slow death sentence for this species.
A suitable setup is sometimes called a river tank or hillstream biotope: a long, shallow aquarium with a powerful circulation pump creating a unidirectional flow, smooth boulders and flat rocks that develop an algae and diatom coating over months, and fine gravel or sand in calmer pockets. The species does not need tall aquaria and does better in the horizontal plane. Keep it with other cool-water hillstream specialists that share its requirements; avoid warm-water community fish, botiid loaches or large, active species that disturb the rocks.
The fish's near-scaleless skin and sensitive physiology mean it responds poorly to copper-based treatments and to full-strength medication doses. Treat any disease outbreak at half-dose with the mildest effective product, and always ensure excellent water quality before reaching for medication — these fish almost never fall ill in a properly maintained river tank, but deteriorate quickly in compromised conditions. Because the species is wild-collected for the trade, quarantine newly purchased individuals in a separate, well-oxygenated, flowing tank before introducing them to an established setup.
Conservation
Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata was assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List in 2011, a classification that reflects the species' narrow endemic range — confined to the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong and Pran Buri river basins in Thailand — and the absence of reliable population size or trend data at the time of assessment. Data Deficient does not mean the species is necessarily secure; it means the data required for a proper assessment were not available, and given its restricted distribution and specialised habitat requirements, it may be more vulnerable than that category implies.
The principal threats facing stream-dwelling hillstream loaches throughout mainland Southeast Asia include agricultural intensification and associated siltation of rocky stream beds (which smothers the biofilm and algae the fish depend on), water extraction for irrigation, hydroelectric and damming projects that alter stream hydrology, and localised collection for the ornamental fish trade. Because Pseudohomaloptera sexmaculata is wild-collected for the aquarium market — there is no known captive breeding programme supplying the trade — collection pressure adds to these habitat pressures. Keepers can support this species most usefully by purchasing from responsible suppliers who source from sustainable wild collection operations, and by attempting to maintain their fish long-term rather than replacing them frequently.
