Taxonomy & naming
This species was described in 1966 by Petru Bănărescu and Teodor Nalbant as Noemacheilus kermanshahensis, part of the same expedition report — "The 3rd Danish Expedition to central Asia. Zoological results 34. Cobitidae from Afghanistan and Iran" — that documented several of the region's stone loaches. For decades it sat in the sprawling, now largely dismantled genus Noemacheilus, a catch-all that has since been broken up as ichthyologists worked out the real relationships within Nemacheilidae.
In 2016 Jörg Freyhof erected the genus Sasanidus specifically for this species, separating it from the closely related genus Oxynoemacheilus. The key distinction is subtle rather than showy: Sasanidus lacks the external secondary sexual characters — such as elongated pectoral fins and nuptial tubercles in breeding males — that Oxynoemacheilus males typically display. Sasanidus kermanshahensis is currently treated as the sole species in its genus (monotypic), and the Catalog of Fishes recognises the combination used here. Older literature and any historical labels using "Noemacheilus kermanshahensis" refer to the same fish. The name Oxynoemacheilus kermanshahensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Like other small Nemacheilidae, Sasanidus kermanshahensis is an elongate, cylindrical loach built for holding position on stream substrate rather than for open swimming. The type specimen was illustrated at roughly 2 in standard length, consistent with the modest size typical of stream-endemic stone loaches in this part of the world. As in its relatives, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales rather than a proper scaled covering, and a short, erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye — the suborbital spine common to nemacheilid and related loaches, used defensively rather than offensively.
A defining feature of the genus is what it lacks: unlike males of the neighbouring genus Oxynoemacheilus, male Sasanidus kermanshahensis do not develop obviously elongated pectoral fins or nuptial tubercles, meaning the sexes are difficult to distinguish by eye even when mature. Beyond the original description and the genus-level diagnosis, detailed morphological data — precise fin-ray counts, colour pattern in life, growth curves — has not been captured in the sources available here; this is a genuinely data-sparse species outside the specialist taxonomic literature.
Habitat
Sasanidus kermanshahensis is endemic to the Karkheh and Karun river drainages of western Iran, with its type locality in a Karun River tributary near the city of Kermanshah. Both river systems drain the Zagros Mountains toward the Persian Gulf, and the streams that hold this and related nemacheilid species are typically cool-to-cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, and running over stony or gravel substrate — classic stone-loach water rather than the warm, still, tannin-stained habitat associated with many tropical loaches.
The Karun basin in particular is known to support several other endemic loach species alongside this one, reflecting the isolating effect of the Zagros drainage system on small-bodied fish with limited dispersal ability. As with much of this species' biology, fine-grained habitat data — exact stream order, elevation, seasonal flow and temperature ranges — has not been captured in the sources consulted here.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary studies are available for Sasanidus kermanshahensis, but its family membership is informative. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches are benthic micro-predators, working the streambed for small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — picked from among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water. There is no indication this species departs from that pattern.
In the near-total absence of aquarium accounts, a diet mirroring its wild foraging is the reasonable inference: small sinking live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) matched to its micro-predator habits, rather than flake or surface foods, which a bottom-oriented fish of this kind is unlikely to seek out.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Sasanidus kermanshahensis. What is notable, and diagnostic for the genus, is the absence of the obvious breeding-season signals seen in its relative Oxynoemacheilus — no elongated male pectoral fins, no nuptial tubercles have been recorded. That makes this a species where sex and reproductive condition cannot reliably be read from external appearance, which in turn is part of why almost nothing is known about how or when wild fish pair up and spawn.
Breeding
No aquarium spawning of Sasanidus kermanshahensis has been documented in the sources available. Based on what is known for stone and brook loaches (family Nemacheilidae) generally, the expected pattern is an egg-scatterer: adults broadcast eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward. This species is not a cave-guarding male-brooder — that reproductive style belongs to gobies, not loaches — and it is not a mouthbrooder.
As is true across most of Nemacheilidae, especially the narrow-range stream endemics, verified aquarium breeding is essentially unreported, and this species has no meaningful presence in the hobby at all. Data here is sparse to the point of absence, and any breeding account should be treated as inference from the family rather than direct observation of this species.
In the aquarium
Sasanidus kermanshahensis is not an established aquarium fish — there is no meaningful trade history or hobbyist husbandry record to draw on. What can be said comes from its family and habitat: a small stream-dwelling nemacheilid from cool, fast, well-oxygenated water would need strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or gravel substrate, and cooler temperatures than the warm, still setups suited to many tropical loaches — not a warm, sluggish community tank.
As with virtually all Nemacheilidae, it would be effectively scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; any hypothetical care should default to gentle, reduced-dose medication and close observation, the same caution warranted across the family. Given the complete absence of trade or captive-husbandry data, this species should be regarded as unavailable and unsuited to casual fishkeeping rather than as a fish with a known care template.
Conservation
Sasanidus kermanshahensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status; that is recorded honestly here as Not Evaluated rather than guessed at. This is common among small-range, stream-endemic Nemacheilidae across the Middle East, many of which remain outside the assessment process entirely.
As a single-drainage endemic restricted to the Karkheh and Karun systems in western Iran, the species is inherently vulnerable to any localised pressure on those rivers — damming, water abstraction, pollution or habitat alteration in the Zagros catchment — even though no specific population data or documented decline is available. There is no evidence this species is collected for the aquarium trade.
