Taxonomy & naming
Carasobarbus hajhosseini was formally described in 2024 by Jouladeh-Roudbar, Kaya, Vatandoust and Ghanavi in Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), as part of a study that erected three new Carasobarbus species through combined mitochondrial phylogenetics and morphological diagnosis. The type locality is the Seymareh River at Talkhab (33.27771°N, 47.21252°E) in Lorestan Province, Iran.
The genus Carasobarbus (sometimes treated under the tribe Torinae in the family Cyprinidae) ranges across western Asia and north-west Africa, occupying the Persian Gulf, Tigris-Euphrates, and adjacent basins. The ETYFish Project notes that the genus Carasobarbus is distributed broadly across this western Asian and north African arc. C. hajhosseini is a newly added member of the Persian Gulf basin fauna within that radiation.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name; the 2024 combination Carasobarbus hajhosseini reflects the current classification. No prior combination under Barbus or another genus is recorded for this species, as it was previously unknown to science.
Morphology
The holotype of Carasobarbus hajhosseini measured 7.5 in standard length (SL), and paratypes ranged from 3.5–7.5 in SL, indicating a fish that routinely reaches 6–7.5 in in nature. Within the genus it is characterised by a relatively long head, measured at 20–24% of SL, and a lateral-line scale count of 32–34, characters that together distinguish it from sympatric or closely related Carasobarbus species.
Like other members of the genus, the body plan is that of a robust, fusiform riverine cyprinid adapted for life in fast-flowing water — streamlined and muscular, with a well-developed caudal fin suited to strong currents. The long head is a notable diagnostic feature; head proportions in the genus are used alongside squamation and fin-ray counts to discriminate species.
Habitat
Carasobarbus hajhosseini is known from the Gamasiab, Kahman, Kashkan and Seymareh rivers, all tributaries of the Karkheh River in western Iran, which drains into the Persian Gulf. The Karkheh system descends from the Zagros Mountains, and these rivers carry cool, turbid to moderately clear water through canyon and piedmont landscapes.
The species occupies deep, swiftly flowing river sections as well as the reservoirs created by dams on the Karkheh system. The presence in both lotic river channels and lentic reservoirs suggests some ecological flexibility, though the deep, oxygenated, current-exposed portions of rivers appear to be the primary habitat. Water chemistry in the Zagros-draining rivers of western Iran is typically neutral to alkaline and moderately hard, reflecting limestone and marl geology.
Feeding
No specific dietary study of Carasobarbus hajhosseini has been published. Based on its size, morphology and membership of a genus of omnivorous to benthivorous riverine barbs, it likely feeds on a mix of bottom-associated invertebrates, plant material, detritus and algae, picking food from the substrate and water column in the manner typical of large Carasobarbus congeners.
Large Carasobarbus species in the Tigris-Euphrates and adjacent basins are known to take aquatic insects, molluscs, crustaceans and plant matter opportunistically. Data specific to C. hajhosseini remain sparse given the recency of its description.
Mating
Carasobarbus hajhosseini, as a cyprinid barb, is expected to follow the egg-scattering reproductive strategy universal in the family. Like its congeners, it is almost certainly a broadcast spawner with no nest construction and no parental care. In large western Asian and Middle Eastern riverine barbs, spawning typically occurs seasonally, triggered by rising water temperatures in spring and early summer, often coinciding with post-snowmelt river flow from the Zagros foothills.
Courtship behaviour in large Carasobarbus species involves the pursuit of gravid females by males through current-sheltered areas or over gravel substrates, with eggs and milt released together into the water column or onto the riverbed. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs settle among gravel and coarse substrate, receiving no subsequent attention from the adults.
Breeding
No captive breeding record for Carasobarbus hajhosseini exists in the literature — the species was only described in 2024 and is not established in the aquarium trade. In nature it is presumed to follow the pattern of other large, cool-adapted western Asian Carasobarbus: seasonal gravel-spawning in the main river channels, with peak activity in spring when river temperatures climb after winter. Females scatter adhesive eggs over coarse substrate in moderate current, and the adults disperse afterwards with no guarding of eggs or larvae.
The species reaches a substantial body size (close to 8 in SL) by cyprinid standards, suggesting a relatively slow maturation rate and multi-year lifespan. Fecundity is likely proportional to body size, with larger females producing larger egg batches. Dam construction on the Karkheh system may interfere with any migratory spawning movements the species undertakes along the river.
In the aquarium
Carasobarbus hajhosseini is not currently kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a newly described species from restricted rivers in western Iran, unlikely to appear in the ornamental trade in the near term. Its considerable adult size — approaching 8 in SL — and adaptation to cool, oxygenated, fast-flowing Zagros mountain rivers would demand a large, well-filtered, cool-water aquarium if it were ever maintained.
For reference, congeners such as Carasobarbus luteus from the Tigris-Euphrates system have occasionally been imported; their care requirements — spacious tanks, good oxygenation, moderate temperatures, neutral to alkaline water — provide a rough template. C. hajhosseini should be considered a wild fish of scientific interest rather than an aquarium subject.
Conservation
Carasobarbus hajhosseini has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2024, it has not yet been evaluated. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The Karkheh River and its tributaries in western Iran face significant anthropogenic pressures. Major dam construction — including the Karkheh Dam — has altered hydrology, fragmented river connectivity, and converted free-flowing channels into reservoirs. These transformations can impede the movement of large rheophilic barbs along their spawning corridors and degrade the deep, swift-flowing microhabitats that C. hajhosseini appears to favour. Additional pressures in the Zagros-draining rivers include water extraction for agriculture, pollution from agricultural runoff, and the introduction of non-native species.
Given its apparently restricted range within the Karkheh drainage and the documented habitat alterations in that system, the species warrants prompt evaluation against IUCN criteria. Surveys to establish population size, range limits and habitat condition would be the essential first step toward informing a formal Red List assessment.
