Taxonomy & naming
Schistura amplizona was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of his extensive work revising the stone loaches of mainland Southeast Asia. Like many of its relatives it was carved out of the older, much broader genus Nemacheilus (itself sometimes spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) as that catch-all group was progressively split apart through the late twentieth century into the modern genera Schistura, Traccatichthys, Barbatula and others. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, places it in Schistura within family Nemacheilidae, and that combination is followed here without alteration.
The species epithet amplizona is built from Latin amplus, "broad" or "ample," and zona, "belt" or "band," referring to the fish's body markings. Schistura is one of the largest genera of freshwater fishes in the world, with several hundred described species spread across South and Southeast Asia, and new species — often from a single stream system — continue to be described as remote drainages are surveyed.
Morphology
Schistura amplizona is a small, elongate loach reaching a documented maximum of about 3.5 in standard length, modest even by the standards of the genus. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it has a slender, roughly cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, small paired fins used to brace against current, and the family's near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin — a detail that matters far more for keepers than for taxonomists, since it makes the fish highly sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications.
As in most Schistura, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye, a defensive structure shared across the broader Cobitoidea loach superfamily. Beyond the type description's body proportions and the diagnostic banding implied by the name amplizona, detailed morphological and colour-pattern information for this species is sparse in the sources available; it has not been the subject of the kind of hobbyist photography and description that better-known stone loaches receive.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Mekong drainage: the Nam Tha and Nam Youan river basins of northern Laos, and the Luosuojiang subbasin of the Mekong system in Yunnan Province, China. This places it squarely in the montane and submontane streams of the Indochinese-Chinese borderlands, a region of steep gradients and fast, clear, rocky watercourses rather than lowland floodplain.
FishBase describes its habitat as freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical streams with moderate flow over rocky and pebbly substrate — consistent with the general Schistura pattern of cool-to-warm, well-oxygenated, current-swept water running over stone rather than mud or sand. Nothing in the available sources suggests still or blackwater conditions; this is a running-water fish of hill streams, and any aquarium approximation should follow that lead rather than default to a warm, static setup.
Feeding
No diet-specific study of Schistura amplizona itself is on record, but the genus as a whole is made up of benthic micro-predators, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Schistura species forage over gravel and among stones for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton — picking prey items off and between the substrate rather than grazing algae or taking much plant matter.
In an aquarium setting, the general Schistura care literature indicates these fish take readily to small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, and will accept sinking prepared foods, but tend to ignore floating flake aimed at midwater fish. Any keeper working with this species should plan feeding around its bottom-dwelling, invertebrate-hunting habits rather than a generalist flake diet.
Mating
No sex-based external differences have been documented for Schistura amplizona, and dimorphism data for the species is effectively absent from the available literature. This is common among the smaller, less-studied Schistura species, many of which are known from only a handful of survey specimens and have never been observed or bred under controlled conditions.
Nothing specific to courtship or spawning behaviour in this species has been recorded. What can be said follows the pattern for stone and brook loaches generally: reproduction is tied to conditions in fast, oxygen-rich stream water rather than to any elaborate pairing ritual, and detailed field or captive observations simply do not exist for this particular species.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Schistura amplizona is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and no breeding account for the species appears in the sources consulted. The general pattern for stone and brook loaches is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry once released.
Given how rarely this species is even kept, let alone bred, the honest position is that its reproductive biology in captivity is unrecorded. Any keeper attempting to breed it would be working from the general Schistura template — clean, cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water as a spawning trigger — rather than from any species-specific account.
In the aquarium
Schistura amplizona is not established in the ornamental trade; it is essentially unknown as an aquarium fish, and the sources available describe it only from a taxonomic and distributional standpoint. A keeper who did encounter it should treat it as a small stream loach: modest adult size around 3.5 in calls for a tank scaled to a shoal of similarly sized bottom-dwellers rather than a single specimen, with strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and a substrate of smooth gravel and rounded stones that lets the fish wedge and forage the way it would in its home streams.
As with all Nemacheilidae, the near-scaleless skin means caution with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard remedies should be avoided or halved. Given the total absence of hobby-level documentation for this species, anyone keeping it should lean on the well-established general care standards for Schistura (temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C, slightly acidic to neutral, moderately soft water, and abundant rock or driftwood refugia) while recognising that species-specific guidance simply does not yet exist.
Conservation
Schistura amplizona is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting its narrow known range — essentially two river basins straddling the Laos–China border — and the general shortage of population, threat and trend data available for a small, unglamorous stream fish. The IUCN assessment notes pressure on its habitat from watercourse alteration linked to deforestation and agricultural expansion, along with harvest by local subsistence fisheries, though the scale of these pressures on the species specifically has not been quantified.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species and therefore no trade-driven conservation concern to report. Its future, so far as anything can be said, rests on the condition of a small number of upper-Mekong tributary streams rather than on anything happening in the hobby.
