Vanmanenia serrilineata is a small hillstream loach from the fast, forested creeks of the upper Mekong basin, where it clings to boulders and rock faces with a flattened, sucker-like body built for torrent life. It belongs to the family Balitoridae — the true hillstream or torrent loaches — and rasps a living from the biofilm and algae coating its rocky habitat, a specialist diet that makes it a poor fit for anything but a mature, high-flow aquarium. Named for the saw-toothed midlateral stripe running down its flank, it is a Data Deficient species known mainly from Laos, southern China and northern Vietnam, and like most of its genus it is essentially unknown to captive breeding.

Taxonomy & naming

Vanmanenia serrilineata was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000 as part of a broader revision of the hillstream loach genus Vanmanenia. It belongs to the family Balitoridae, the true hillstream or torrent loaches, a group distinct from the botiid and cobitid loaches more familiar to most aquarists. The genus Vanmanenia itself has been repeatedly reshuffled as balitorid taxonomy has been revised over the past few decades, and older literature or trade names may still place related species under now-obsolete combinations; the Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid genus and species placement, and this article follows it in keeping the species in Vanmanenia.

The species epithet serrilineata is descriptive rather than geographic or dedicatory. It combines Latin roots referencing a saw-toothed (serrate) pattern along the fish's midlateral stripe, the field mark that distinguishes it from its close relatives within the genus. Data on the species remains sparse outside the original description and subsequent distribution notes, which is typical for small, range-restricted hillstream loaches from remote Southeast Asian headwaters.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Vanmanenia serrilineata has the flattened, ventrally depressed body plan typical of a true hillstream loach — a body shape that turns the fish's underside into an effective sucker, pressing it flat against rock in current the way a torrent-adapted animal must. This is a small species, reaching only around 2.5 in in standard length, well within the range typical for the genus.

The skin is largely scaleless or near-scaleless, a trait shared across the balitorid hillstream loaches and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity. The saw-toothed midlateral stripe that gives the species its name is the most useful visual field mark separating it from congeners. This is fundamentally a cool, high-flow, high-oxygen specialist: its flattened, sucker-bodied form only makes sense in the context of clinging to rock in fast water, and a fish of this shape kept in warm, still, poorly oxygenated conditions is a fish in the wrong habitat entirely.

Habitat

Vanmanenia serrilineata is native to swift, forest-shaded creeks in the upper Mekong drainage, recorded from the Nam Ou and Nam Tha basins of northern Laos, the Nanlahe River in Yunnan, China, and adjacent parts of northern Vietnam. It lives over boulders and rock in moderate-to-fast current, in clear, well-oxygenated water running through forested hill terrain — precisely the kind of habitat that defines a hillstream specialist.

Recorded water conditions run cool relative to typical tropical community fish, with temperatures from around 61 °F and a distinctly alkaline pH of 8.1 or higher reported at collection sites. This is a fish of clear, fast, cool-to-moderate hill water, not the warm, still, blackwater conditions associated with many lowland tropical fish, and its aquarium care must follow that reality rather than a generic tropical-fish template.

Feeding

Vanmanenia serrilineata is an aufwuchs grazer — it feeds by rasping biofilm, diatoms and algae directly off rock surfaces in the fast, clear water of its home streams, using a specialized sucker-mouth built for exactly that job. This is the defining, and most commonly mishandled, aspect of keeping any Vanmanenia species: it is not a generic "algae eater" and it does not subsist on flake food.

In the aquarium it needs a mature tank with an established biofilm and algae layer on rockwork to graze continuously, supplemented with small frozen foods and blanched vegetable matter. A newly set up or scrupulously clean tank offers this fish nothing to eat, and starvation — not disease — is the most common way hillstream loaches like this one are lost in captivity. Keepers should resist the urge to keep the tank spotless and instead let algae and biofilm build on rock surfaces before adding the fish.

Mating

Little to nothing has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Vanmanenia serrilineata specifically, and no external sexual dimorphism has been reliably described for the species. This gap is typical of the genus: most Vanmanenia species are known chiefly from field collections and taxonomic descriptions rather than sustained observation in captivity, so reproductive behaviour largely remains undocumented.

What is known from related hillstream loaches, particularly the better-studied Sewellia lineolata, suggests that where spawning does occur it happens in a mature, strongly-flowing river-style aquarium, with eggs dropped or lightly buried among stones and gravel and no parental care given afterward. Whether this pattern extends to Vanmanenia serrilineata itself is not established, and it would be a guess to assert it does.

Breeding

Vanmanenia serrilineata is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium, and reliable accounts of captive spawning in the genus as a whole are rare. Where hillstream loaches do reproduce in captivity — Sewellia lineolata being the best-documented example — the pattern is egg-scattering: eggs are dropped or lightly buried among stones and gravel in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water, with no parental care of any kind. There is no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding and no pair-bonding behaviour in this family; any of those would be a misattribution borrowed from an unrelated group of fish.

For this species specifically, the honest position is that breeding data is sparse to absent. Most individuals in the trade, where they appear at all, are wild-collected rather than captive-bred, and a keeper should not expect or plan for reproduction in a standard home setup.

In the aquarium

Vanmanenia serrilineata is a demanding specialist rather than a beginner fish, and success with it depends on replicating its torrent habitat rather than treating it as a generic bottom-dweller. It needs strong, continuous water flow and high dissolved oxygen — powerheads or a high-turnover filter aimed to create real current are not optional extras but the core requirement, since without them a hillstream loach effectively suffocates. Water should run on the cool side relative to typical tropical tankmates, clean, and alkaline, tracking the conditions recorded at its collection sites rather than a warm, soft, acidic blackwater setup.

The tank needs a mature rockscape with an established biofilm and algae covering for the fish to graze continuously; a sterile or newly cycled tank will starve it. Its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dose. Being a peaceful, small, current-loving species, it is best suited to a dedicated biotope-style hillstream aquarium alongside other current-adapted fish rather than a standard warm community tank.

Conservation

Vanmanenia serrilineata is assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment), reflecting how little population or threat information exists for this narrow-range hill-stream endemic. Its known distribution — the Nam Ou and Nam Tha basins of northern Laos, the Nanlahe River in Yunnan, and adjacent northern Vietnam — is limited, and stream-restricted species of this kind are typically vulnerable to deforestation, sedimentation and hydropower development even when formal data is lacking.

No population trend or specific threat has been documented for this species in available sources, and it is not established as a significant part of the aquarium trade under this name. Given the Data Deficient status, the honest position is that its conservation situation is genuinely unknown rather than reassuring, and any wild-collected specimens reaching the trade should be regarded with that uncertainty in mind.
