Schistura defectiva is a small stone loach known only from the Nam Ngum and Nam Khan basins of the Mekong drainage in Laos, described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the group that supplies most of the genuinely small, clear-stream "brook loaches" — bold little bottom-dwelling micro-predators built for cool, fast, oxygen-rich water rather than the still, warm tanks many keepers default to. At under 2 in it is a modest fish, and outside a handful of museum and survey records it is essentially undocumented: no aquarium care literature, no confirmed trade history, no recorded temperature or breeding data. That data gap is itself the honest headline — this is a narrow-range Lao endemic that the world has assessed as Data Deficient rather than studied in any depth.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura defectiva was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of his long body of work revising the stone-loach genera of Southeast Asia. It sits in Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one that has absorbed many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as those groups were split apart through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority followed here — lists the species as Schistura defectiva Kottelat, 2000, with no synonyms noted in the available records.

As with most of the genus, S. defectiva is defined mainly on fine anatomical detail — fin-ray counts, lateral-line configuration, colour pattern and proportional measurements — the kind of characters that separate look-alike stone loaches from one another across the hundreds of narrow-range species now recognised in Schistura. No English or trade common name is documented for this species; it is known, where it is known at all, by its scientific binomial.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 2 in, placing Schistura defectiva among the smaller members of a genus that is itself made up mostly of small fish. Like other Schistura it is an elongate, softly cylindrical stone loach with a flattened underside suited to gripping stream substrate, small paired barbels around the mouth for feeling out food, and — as in nemacheilids generally — an erectile suborbital spine used defensively rather than for feeding.

The skin, as in nearly all true loaches, carries only small or embedded scales and no heavy bony armour, leaving the fish sensitive to handling and to strong medication. Beyond the size and locality data captured by FishBase, no detailed morphological description, colour-pattern account or photograph is documented in the available sources, so specifics of banding or fin shape are not asserted here.

Habitat

Schistura defectiva is known only from the Nam Ngum and Nam Khan river basins, both tributaries of the Mekong within Laos — a narrow, single-country range typical of the genus, where many species are restricted to one river system or even one stream. As a nemacheilid stone loach it almost certainly inhabits the same kind of water that related, better-studied Schistura species use: clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams and rivers over stone, gravel and sand, the classic "stone loach" habitat that gives the group its common name.

Any care approach here has to be extrapolated cautiously from Schistura generally: a small stone loach of this kind wants a mature tank built around strong flow, high dissolved oxygen and a clean, coarse substrate of sand and smooth gravel rather than mud or fine silt, with stable, cool-to-moderate stream temperatures rather than a warm, still community setup.

As in all nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin means any medication should be dosed cautiously — full-strength treatments and copper-based products are best avoided or halved. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry records, a prospective keeper should treat this species as effectively unavailable and unstudied rather than plan a tank around it.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura defectiva as Data Deficient: there is not enough information on its population, range extent or threats to assign a category of extinction risk. FishBase corroborates this Data Deficient status, dated to 2011. This is consistent with the species' narrow known range — confined to the Nam Ngum and Nam Khan basins in Laos — and the broader pattern across small-range Schistura, many of which are known from very few records and have never been the subject of a dedicated population survey.
