Taxonomy & naming
Schistura personata was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, whose genus-level taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as ichthyologists split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. Many species once placed there — including this one's genus-mates — are now recognised under Schistura, one of several genera erected to reflect real anatomical and genetic distinctions within the family. The Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, and S. personata is accepted there as described.
As with much of the family, the species is defined by a combination of fine-scaled characters — colour pattern, fin-ray counts, and features of the head and lateral line — that separate it from superficially similar Schistura in the same drainage. Should it appear, its small adult size (around 2.5 in) and its native fast-water habitat point clearly to what it needs: strong water flow — roughly four to five times the tank volume per hour is a reasonable benchmark for the genus — high dissolved oxygen, and a hard substrate of stone and gravel rather than soft sand or mud.
Related Schistura are reported to be territorial toward other bottom-dwellers, and are generally kept apart from other loaches such as Corydoras or Pangio that would compete for the same space and food. As with other near-scaleless loaches, caution with copper-based medications and full-strength treatments is prudent even though no species-specific sensitivity data is on record here. A tank built around current, oxygen and hiding spaces among stones — rather than the warm, still, planted setup that suits many other small fish — is the right starting point.
