Taxonomy & naming
Schistura incerta was described in 1931 by the American ichthyologist John Treadwell Nichols, in the Lingnan Science Journal published in Canton, based on a holotype (AMNH 9690) collected at Lung T'au Shaan, on the Tso Tsz Hoh, in Kwangtung (Guangdong) province, China. Nichols originally placed it in the genus Barbatula, one of the many nemacheilid "catch-all" genera used through much of the 20th century before the family was reorganized along more rigorous lines.
The Nemacheilidae — stone or brook loaches — have been repeatedly split and re-split as the old broad genera Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus and Barbatula were shown to be non-monophyletic; large numbers of Asian species, this one included, were transferred into Schistura, now one of the most species-rich genera in the entire order Cypriniformes. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid fish names, lists the currently valid combination as Schistura incerta (Nichols, 1931), with Barbatula incerta as the original combination. The specific epithet incerta is Latin for "uncertain" or "doubtful" — an apt name, since even Nichols regarded the species' status as provisional, and nearly a century later it remains one of the more obscure members of its genus.
Morphology
Schistura incerta is a small, elongate stone loach typical of the genus: a slender, cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and a pointed head with barbels around the mouth for probing the substrate. FishBase records a common length of about 2.5 in standard length, with a maximum recorded size of 5.5 in total length and a weight of 16.6 g — the latter figure well above the typical adult size and possibly representing an exceptional individual.
Like other members of the family Nemacheilidae, it lacks the erectile suborbital spine found in the related family Botiidae (the clown, yoyo and zebra loaches); nemacheilids are sometimes called "spineless" or "brook" loaches for this reason, though the name Schistura itself refers to a divided or forked feature of the fin rather than to any spine. Detailed published descriptions of its colour pattern, fin counts and other diagnostic morphology beyond the original 1931 description and subsequent catalog entries are not readily available — this remains, in the honest phrase of the data available, a poorly documented species.
Habitat
Schistura incerta is native to the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) basin and the Han Jiang, in southeast China's Guangdong province, with records extending into streams of northern Vietnam. FishBase describes it as occurring in subtropical freshwater and brackish streams, and as benthic and demersal — a bottom-dweller that spends its life on or near the substrate rather than in open water.
As a stone loach, it fits the well-established pattern for the genus Schistura: a fish of clear, flowing, well-oxygenated stream channels, typically over gravel, sand or rock, where it can grip the current and forage from the bottom. No specific temperature or pH range has been documented for this species in the sources available, and given the honest gap in the record it should not be assumed to tolerate the warm, still conditions suited to many aquarium standbys; subtropical stream habitats in this region typically run cooler and more oxygen-rich than a standard tropical community tank.
Feeding
FishBase places Schistura incerta at trophic level 3.0, consistent with an omnivorous to detritivorous diet — a bottom-forager taking a mix of small invertebrates, organic detritus and biofilm from the stream substrate. This matches the general pattern for stone loaches in the genus, which typically act as micro-predators of the streambed, picking off insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms rather than pursuing free-swimming prey.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but related, better-documented Schistura species are reported to take small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm or chironomid larvae — while often ignoring dry flake. A keeper working from the genus pattern should expect a similar preference for meaty, sinking foods delivered near the bottom.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism, courtship behaviour or spawning account has been documented for Schistura incerta in the available literature. This is not unusual for a stone loach known chiefly from museum and survey records rather than sustained field or aquarium study; most Nemacheilidae, including well-known ones, are poorly studied in this respect.
What can be said comes from the family pattern rather than direct observation of this species: Schistura and other stone loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no pair-bonding or extended courtship recorded, rather than the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups.
Breeding
There is no confirmed breeding record for Schistura incerta, in the wild or in captivity. Consistent with the genus and family, the expected mode is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — the standard reproductive strategy across Nemacheilidae, in clear contrast to the more elaborate cave-spawning or mouthbrooding strategies found elsewhere in freshwater fish.
This species has essentially no footprint in the aquarium hobby, and there is no record of it having been bred at home. That fits the broader honest picture for stone and brook loaches generally: outside a small number of well-studied genera, most Schistura species are rarely or never spawned by hobbyists, and this particular species — first described from a single Chinese stream system and seemingly little revisited since — is squarely in that category.
In the aquarium
Schistura incerta is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear in the standard hobbyist references, and there is no documented care history to draw on. What can be inferred comes from its FishBase profile and the general requirements of stone loaches in the genus: a modestly sized fish (common length around 2.5 in, with some individuals reported larger) that needs clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a hard substrate of gravel, sand or rock, plus small meaty foods offered near the bottom.
Like other nemacheilids it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a point worth flagging even in the absence of a specific record, since it is a consistent feature across the family. Anyone encountering this species in the trade — an unlikely but not impossible scenario given the churn of unidentified "assorted loach" imports — should treat it as a coldwater-leaning to subtropical stream fish requiring strong flow and high oxygenation, not a standard warm, still community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classifies Schistura incerta as Data Deficient, an assessment dating to February 2010. FishBase additionally notes low fishing vulnerability and a medium population resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years — figures drawn from life-history modelling rather than direct population monitoring, since no dedicated population studies of this species are known.
Data Deficient is an honest category here rather than a placeholder: this is a narrow-range stream endemic of the Pearl River basin, Han Jiang and adjoining northern Vietnamese drainages, a region under real and ongoing pressure from damming, pollution and land-use change, yet there is no published assessment of how the species is actually faring. It has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not a documented concern; the open question is simply whether anyone has looked closely at this species since its description.
