Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis obtusirostra was described in 2015 by Chen, Sui, He and Chen as one of three new spined loach species erected together in the genus Cobitis from Chinese material, published in a paper on the family Cobitidae. The holotype is a male of 3 in standard length, with paratypes ranging 3–4.5 in SL (females running larger than males, as in many Cobitis). The species remains in its original genus, Cobitis, within the family Cobitidae, the spined loaches — no subsequent revision has moved it.
The epithet obtusirostra combines the Latin obtusus ("blunt") and rostrum ("snout"), describing the fish's rounded, blunt-tipped snout — a diagnostic feature used to separate it from congeners in the same 2015 paper. No English common name is established in the literature or trade; it is referred to by its scientific name.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Cobitis obtusirostra carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the Cobitidae their common name of "spined loaches" — a small, hinged spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out defensively. Its skin is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless and, as in its relatives, sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications.
The original description diagnoses the species by a combination of characters: a cystiform (bladder-shaped) lamina circularis, a sharp, filamentous tip to the pectoral-fin ray in males, a lateral stripe (L5) marked by 8–10 rounded blotches, and a distinctive jet-black, arcuate (curved) spot on the caudal peduncle. Males reach roughly 3 in SL and are smaller than females, which run up to about 4.5 in SL in the type series — modest sizes typical of the genus.
Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality: the River Lianjiang, a tributary of the Beijiang (North River), itself part of the larger Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) drainage in Guangdong Province, southern China (recorded near 24°78′ N, 112°38′ E). The type series was collected in April 1976, and no broader survey data establishing a wider range appears in the available literature — this reads as a narrow-range stream endemic rather than a widely distributed species.
Critically, this is a temperate river system, not a tropical one. Guangdong has a subtropical climate with a cool season, and Cobitis as a genus is characteristically a coolwater group across its Eurasian range. This species should be treated as coldwater/temperate rather than tropical — a meaningful contrast with the warm Southeast Asian rivers that produce the botiid loaches familiar to most aquarists.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding data has been published for Cobitis obtusirostra, but the genus Cobitis is a well-studied group of sand-sifting benthic omnivores, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Wild Cobitis forage over soft sediment for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans — along with detritus, often headstanding into the substrate to feed.
A closely related temperate species, Cobitis taenia, is documented taking small live and frozen foods such as black mosquito larvae, bloodworm and Tubifex, plus sinking prepared foods, and this is a reasonable proxy for what C. obtusirostra would need if kept: a soft, sand-based substrate to sift and a diet of small meaty foods rather than flake.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for Cobitis obtusirostra specifically. In the well-documented related species Cobitis taenia, spawning is seasonal, occurring in spring as water warms, with fractional spawners releasing eggs in multiple batches — reported figures of roughly 2,900–4,300 eggs per female across 14–18 batches in a season — rather than a single event.
Given that C. obtusirostra shares its genus and a comparable temperate climate, a similar spring-triggered, multi-batch spawning pattern is plausible, but this should be read as an inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for this specific species.
Breeding
As in other members of the genus, Cobitis obtusirostra would be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — eggs released among plants or vegetation, with adults taking no further part once spawning is complete. Several temperate Cobitis species, along with the related dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers under cool, seasonally-cued conditions, unlike the tropical Cobitidae (such as Acantopsis or Lepidocephalichthys), which are generally not bred at home.
There is, however, no published or credible hobby record of Cobitis obtusirostra itself having been bred in captivity. It is not established in the aquarium trade, and the honest statement for this species is that it has essentially never been bred outside its native river — any breeding attempt would be speculative, modelled on cooler-water Cobitis relatives rather than on direct experience with this fish.
In the aquarium
Cobitis obtusirostra is not an established aquarium species — it is a recently described (2015), narrow-range Chinese stream endemic with no meaningful presence in the hobby or trade, and no dedicated care literature exists. Anything said about keeping it must be inferred cautiously from its genus and its temperate native water.
Were it ever kept, the governing points would carry over from Cobitis generally: it wants a soft, sand-based substrate for natural sifting behaviour, cool rather than tropical water reflecting its subtropical Chinese river origin, and — like all spined loaches — gentle handling and cautious, reduced-strength medication given its near-scaleless, spine-bearing anatomy. Keepers should not treat this as a normal warm-tropical community loach; its biology points to an unheated or lightly heated setup, not a standard tropical tank.
Conservation
Cobitis obtusirostra has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category — it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is unsurprising: the species was described only in 2015 from material collected in 1976, is known from a single river system in Guangdong, and Chinese stream endemics of this kind are frequently overlooked by global assessment processes even when their narrow ranges would otherwise warrant scrutiny.
No data on population trend, habitat pressures, or trade exposure for this species is available in the sources consulted. Given its restriction to a single tributary of the Beijiang within the heavily developed Pearl River basin, the kind of stream-endemic risks that affect many similarly narrow-range Cobitis and Cobitidae — damming, pollution, water abstraction and urbanization — are plausible concerns, but none of this is documented specifically for C. obtusirostra, and no formal assessment exists to confirm it.
