Taxonomy & naming
Schistura nagaensis was described by the Indian ichthyologist A. G. K. Menon in 1987, hence the parenthetical authority (Menon, 1987) indicating the species has since been treated within the same genus in which it was first placed, or reassigned to it. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was split out from the old broad "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" grouping as the group's taxonomy was revised through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; many species once lumped under those older genus names are now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and their relatives. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid combination Schistura nagaensis.
Schistura is by far the largest genus in Nemacheilidae, with well over 200 described species distributed across South, Southeast and East Asia, and new species are still being described from poorly surveyed hill-stream systems. S. nagaensis is one of many range-restricted Schistura known from a single river system, a pattern typical of the genus and a major reason so many of its species remain little studied outside their formal taxonomic description.
Morphology
Schistura nagaensis is a small, elongate stone loach reaching about 2.5 in in standard length. Like other members of its genus it has an incomplete lateral line — reaching only to about the tip of the pectoral fin rather than running the full length of the body — and a dorsal fin with roughly 8.5 branched rays. The body carries a bold pattern of 7 to 14 broad black bars, and the dorsal and caudal fins each show two rows of dark spots; the caudal fin itself is slightly emarginate (shallowly forked).
As in other true loaches of this family, the skin is effectively naked to the eye — scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an obvious armor — and an erectile spine sits in a groove below each eye, a defensive feature shared across the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Both traits matter more in the aquarium than they might suggest from appearance alone: the near-scaleless skin makes this kind of fish notably sensitive to medication, and the suborbital spine can snag in a net.
Habitat
The species is a benthic (bottom-dwelling) fish of hill streams with fast currents over gravel substrate. It is documented from the Tizu River, part of the Chindwin River basin, in Manipur and Nagaland in far northeastern India, with a possible extension of range into neighbouring Myanmar. This is classic nemacheilid country: swift, clear, cool-to-moderate mountain-stream water tumbling over a gravel and stone bottom, well above the slow, warm lowland rivers and floodplains that many other Asian freshwater fish favour.
Specific water chemistry data (temperature range, pH) for S. nagaensis has not been captured in available sources, but the habitat description is unambiguous: a fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, gravel-bottomed hill stream, not still or sluggish water. Given the elevation and current typical of Schistura habitat generally, cool, highly oxygenated conditions should be assumed over anything resembling a warm, static aquarium setup.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study of Schistura nagaensis appears in available sources, but its ecology follows the well-documented pattern for benthic Schistura in fast hill streams: a micro-predator that forages over gravel and stone for small invertebrates, insect larvae and tiny crustaceans dislodged by the current. This is a fish built to pick prey from the streambed rather than filter or graze algae.
In an aquarium setting this diet translates to small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrate mixes — along with sinking pellets or wafers formulated for bottom feeders; flake that sits on the surface is likely to be ignored by a fish whose whole body plan is oriented toward the substrate.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning triggers or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Schistura nagaensis in available sources. Data on reproduction in this species is genuinely sparse, which is typical for a narrow-range stream endemic known chiefly from its original taxonomic description and subsequent conservation assessment rather than from sustained field or aquarium study.
What can be said follows the general pattern for stone and brook loaches: Nemacheilidae as a family are egg-scatterers rather than nest-builders or mouthbrooders, with no evidence of the parental care, cave-guarding or brooding behaviours seen in unrelated fish groups. Any spawning in this species should be assumed to follow that scattering pattern until better documentation exists.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura nagaensis being bred in captivity, and it does not appear to have an established aquarium trade presence at all. This is consistent with the wider picture for stone and brook loaches: most Nemacheilidae species are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward, and the great majority are rarely or never spawned by hobbyists.
Given the complete absence of aquarium-breeding data for this species, the honest statement is simply that it is not a fish with a known captive-breeding history — any keeper encountering it should not expect an established protocol, and any successful spawning would be a genuinely notable, undocumented event.
In the aquarium
Schistura nagaensis has no established profile in the aquarium hobby, and it should not be assumed to be generally available in the trade. Its small size (under 2.5 in) and demanding native habitat — cold-to-cool, fast, highly oxygenated hill-stream water over gravel — mean that any attempt to keep it would need to replicate strong current, excellent oxygenation and a stone-and-gravel substrate rather than the warm, still conditions suited to many popular community fish.
As with other members of its family, its near-scaleless skin makes it a fish that would be expected to be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, and caution with dosing should be the default assumption for any Schistura species. In the absence of specific husbandry data, prospective keepers are best served by treating this as a data-sparse stream specialist rather than a documented aquarium species.
Conservation
Schistura nagaensis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, an assessment dated 21 January 2010 under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting a species with a small range that is inferred to be in continuing decline due to habitat degradation or loss. FishBase attributes the pressure on this species to habitat degradation from slash-and-burn (jhum) cultivation in its native hill-stream catchments, compounded by destructive fishing practices including the use of explosives and poisons.
Because the species is known only from the Tizu River system in the Chindwin basin of Manipur and Nagaland, with a possible extension into Myanmar, its entire known range is narrow and vulnerable to exactly the kind of localized catchment disturbance that has been documented. There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, so its conservation picture is driven by land-use and fishing pressure in its home streams rather than by collection for the hobby.
