Taxonomy & naming
Physoschistura chindwinensis was described by Lokeshwor and Vishwanath in 2012 in the journal Ichthyological Research (volume 59, pages 230–234), based on material from the Lokchao River in the Chindwin drainage of Manipur, northeastern India. The species epithet chindwinensis refers directly to this type locality — the Chindwin river basin, the major Irrawaddy tributary that drains much of northwestern Myanmar and the adjoining hill country of Manipur.
The genus Physoschistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with well over 400 described species spread across Eurasia. Nemacheilid taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; many species once lumped there are now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula or, as here, Physoschistura. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms Physoschistura chindwinensis as the currently valid combination, and older literature referring to the family as Balitoridae reflects a now-superseded classification — Nemacheilidae is the accepted family today.
Morphology
This is a small, slender loach, with a maximum recorded standard length of about 2 in — one of the smaller members of an already small-bodied family. The body carries a bold pattern of 13–17 dark-brown bars crossing the flanks with 11–16 saddle-like markings along the back, and the interorbital area bears a distinct rectangular, shield-like mark between the eyes. The dorsal fin has 3 simple and roughly 8½ branched rays, and the preoperculomandibular canal (the sensory pore line along the lower jaw and gill cover) carries seven pores — a detail used to separate it from close relatives. Males are reported to develop a suborbital flap, a modest fold of skin below the eye rather than the erectile spine seen in botiid loaches, and the air bladder has a well-formed free posterior chamber, both features used in the original description to distinguish the species.
Like most nemacheilids, Physoschistura chindwinensis is essentially scaleless to the touch, its tiny embedded scales offering little protection — a detail that matters far more for husbandry than for appearance, since it leaves the skin unusually exposed to medications and poor water quality.
Habitat
The species is known from the Lokchao River, part of the Chindwin basin in Manipur, India, close to the Myanmar border — cool, clear, fast-flowing hill-stream habitat typical of nemacheilid loaches across the eastern Himalayan foothills. Streams in this system run over stone, gravel and sand with strong current and high dissolved oxygen, conditions that favour a flattened, bottom-hugging body built to hold station against flow rather than swim in open water.
As with many single-locality stone loaches, published habitat data beyond the type locality is essentially absent — this is a genuinely data-sparse species rather than one with a well-documented distribution, and no meaningful population or range survey appears to have followed the original description.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level around 2.8, consistent with a micro-predator that forages over the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey picked from between stones in fast water. No dedicated dietary study of this species has been published, but the pattern holds across Physoschistura and its nemacheilid relatives generally.
In practical terms this means the species (where kept) should be treated as a benthic hunter rather than a grazer: it wants small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates — delivered to the bottom, and is unlikely to take flake with any enthusiasm.
Mating
No spawning behaviour, courtship, or sexual dimorphism beyond the male's suborbital flap has been documented for Physoschistura chindwinensis. Nothing in the cited literature describes pairing, timing, or breeding triggers for this species — a gap consistent with a stream loach known from a single river system and described only recently.
Breeding
Nothing specific to Physoschistura chindwinensis has been published on reproduction, and there is no record of it being bred in captivity. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Stone loaches of this kind are rarely, if ever, deliberately bred in home aquaria, and this obscure, single-river species has essentially no aquarium history to draw on — the honest position is that its breeding biology is undescribed.
In the aquarium
Physoschistura chindwinensis does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade, and there is no meaningful hobbyist literature on keeping it. Anything said about husbandry here is inference from its biology and from nemacheilid loaches generally, not from documented aquarium experience with this particular species.
Were it to be kept, its small adult size (around 2 in) and hill-stream origin point toward a modestly sized tank with cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water, strong current, and a bottom of stone, gravel and sand rather than soft mud or heavy planting. Like other nearly scaleless loaches it should be assumed sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if treatment is ever needed. Given how little is documented, a keeper encountering this species should treat every husbandry parameter as provisional rather than settled.
Conservation
Physoschistura chindwinensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed category. Known only from the Lokchao River in the Chindwin basin of Manipur, India, it is the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that is easy to overlook in conservation assessments simply because so little survey work has been directed at it.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not a documented concern; the more relevant risks, as for many small Himalayan foothill stream fish, would be habitat-level pressures such as water quality changes, damming or land-use change in its home river system — though no specific study of such pressures on this species has been published.
