Taxonomy & naming
Schistura nudidorsum was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, as part of a major survey of the fishes of the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai river basins in Laos that added roughly two dozen new species to the region's known fauna in a single paper. The genus Schistura belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with many hundreds of described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia.
Nemacheilidae taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled since the mid-twentieth century, with many species once placed in the broad catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus later redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera as the group was revised. Schistura nudidorsum has held its combination since description; the Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid names, lists it under Schistura. As a narrow-range stream endemic, it has not attracted the taxonomic revision or genetic study given to more widespread or aquarium-popular Schistura species.
Morphology
Schistura nudidorsum shares the general Nemacheilidae body plan: an elongate, cylindrical, bottom-hugging fish with a flattened underside, small eyes set high on the head, and a mouth surrounded by barbels adapted for probing gravel and stone for food. Like other members of its genus it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out, a defining feature of the Cobitoidea loaches. Its skin is essentially scaleless or covered in only minute embedded scales, a trait shared across the group that has direct consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
Detailed morphometric data — precise adult size, colour pattern description and diagnostic characters distinguishing it from close relatives — are documented in Kottelat's original description but have not been widely reproduced in secondary or hobby literature. No verified maximum length figure for this species could be confirmed from available sources; as a small nemacheilid stream loach it is reasonably assumed to fall in the range typical of the genus, but this should be treated as an approximation rather than a measured fact.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang drainages, tributaries of the Mekong in central Laos, and has not been recorded outside this system. It occupies streams with moderate to fast current running over gravel and stone substrate, typically found in riffle sections — the shallow, turbulent, well-oxygenated stretches between deeper pools that are the classic microhabitat for stone loaches. These are cool, clear highland and foothill streams rather than warm, still lowland waters.
The Nam Theun basin sits in rugged, forested terrain, and the fish's entire known range is bound up with the health of this one river system. Fast-flowing, high-oxygen, clean streams over hard substrate are a defining habitat requirement across Schistura as a genus, and there is no indication this species departs from that pattern.
Feeding
Schistura nudidorsum is presumed to follow the feeding pattern typical of its genus: a benthic micro-predator that forages over gravel and stone for small invertebrates, picking insect larvae and other tiny stream-bed animals from among the substrate in riffle current. This diet is consistent with the fast, clean, cool streams the species inhabits, where such prey is abundant and where a fish spends most of its time working the bottom rather than feeding in open water.
No species-specific dietary study exists for S. nudidorsum. In the aquarium, related Schistura species take small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small worms — and are often reluctant to compete for dry flake, a pattern that would be expected to hold here as well, though this is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for this species.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura nudidorsum. Data on sexual dimorphism, pairing behaviour or seasonal spawning triggers for this species is effectively absent from the literature, a common situation for narrow-range Nemacheilidae known from only a handful of scientific collecting trips.
What can be said comes from the broader genus: Schistura and other stone loaches are generally believed to spawn as egg-scatterers in fast-flowing riffle water, without pairing behaviour resembling that of cave-spawning or mouthbrooding fishes. Given the total absence of species-specific breeding records — in the wild or in captivity — this should be read as an inference from family-level biology, not an observation of this fish.
Breeding
There are no known aquarium breeding records for Schistura nudidorsum, and it is not established in the ornamental trade at any scale that would generate such records. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, its reproduction is presumed to follow the Nemacheilidae pattern: eggs are scattered over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward.
This is an honest gap rather than a guess dressed up as fact — the species is data-sparse specifically because it is a remote, narrow-range stream endemic that has drawn little attention outside its original scientific description. Anyone encountering this fish should expect it to behave, if it behaves at all in captivity, like other unbred Schistura: rarely if ever spawning in a home aquarium.
In the aquarium
Schistura nudidorsum is essentially unknown in the hobby, and any aquarium guidance must be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and its wild habitat rather than from direct experience with the species. It comes from cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream water over gravel and stone, which points to a setup with strong filtration and current, a hard substrate of sand and rounded gravel, and stable, clean water rather than the warm, still conditions suited to many tropical community fish.
As with other nemacheilids and loaches generally, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dose if the species is ever kept. Given how little is documented about it — size, temperament, compatibility, longevity — this is not a species to acquire casually; it belongs with keepers prepared to treat it as an experimental, poorly known fish rather than a routine community loach, and any specimens in the trade are very likely wild-collected from its single known river system rather than captive-bred.
Conservation
Schistura nudidorsum has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated, a common status for narrow-range Laotian stream endemics that have never been the subject of a dedicated conservation review. Its entire known distribution is confined to the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang drainages in central Laos.
That narrow range is a meaningful vulnerability in its own right: the Nam Theun basin has been subject to major hydropower dam construction, along with logging, deforestation, agricultural expansion and gold mining, all of which alter the flow, sediment load and water quality of the fast, clean streams this species and its many co-described relatives depend on. With no population data and no trend information available, the honest picture is a data gap rather than a documented decline — but the pressures on its one known river system are real and ongoing.
