Taxonomy & naming
Schistura sombooni was formally described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, based on material from the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai river systems, tributaries of the Mekong in central Laos. Kottelat has described a very large share of the mainland Southeast Asian Schistura, and this species is one of many stone loaches from that region to enter the scientific record only in the last few decades, as survey work pushed into previously poorly documented headwater streams.
The genus Schistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, which was itself split out from the older, broader "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" catch-all as taxonomists worked through the group genus by genus. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and it lists this species as Schistura sombooni; no synonymy or reclassification affecting the current name is noted here.
Morphology
Schistura sombooni is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reaching a reported maximum of about 2.5 in standard length, with maturity around 2.5 in — a fish that stays modest in size throughout its life. The body carries a series of 6 to 11 dark bars, but the patterning is not strongly contrasted: the anterior bars are fainter than those toward the tail, and the barring is usually very faint across the lower half of the body, giving the fish a subdued, mottled look rather than the crisp banding seen in some showier stone loaches.
As in other Schistura, the species carries the family's diagnostic features: an erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove below the eye, used defensively and easily missed at a glance, and the fine, deeply embedded scales typical of the group that leave the skin close to naked — a detail that matters for handling and medicating the fish. Beyond the coloration and size given in the available literature, detailed morphological description is limited, and finer anatomical points are best treated as data-sparse pending further study.
Habitat
The species is known from the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai basins, both part of the Mekong drainage in Laos, where it has been recorded in stretches of slow current over gravel and sandy substrate. This places it in flowing, well-oxygenated Southeast Asian river habitat typical of the genus, though the specific reach types documented for this species lean toward gentler current than the fast riffles favored by some other Schistura.
As with many stream-restricted nemacheilids, the full picture of its habitat use — seasonal movement, microhabitat preference, tolerance of turbidity or temperature swings — has not been extensively studied, and this species should be treated as a genuine habitat specialist of its home basins in the absence of broader survey data.
Feeding
Schistura sombooni is recorded as omnivorous with a benthopelagic feeding mode and a trophic level around 3.0, consistent with a small invertebrate-feeding loach that forages over the substrate. Like other Schistura, it likely takes small insects, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton picked from gravel and sand in flowing water, rounding this out with some organic detritus.
In captivity, a diet built around small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small blackworm — alongside quality sinking pellets or wafers would suit this feeding style well; as a bottom forager it is unlikely to compete effectively for food that stays in the water column, so flake alone is a poor match for it.
Mating
No specific account of courtship or spawning behavior for Schistura sombooni was found in the cached sources, and none should be assumed. Stone and brook loaches in this genus are not known for pair-bonding or elaborate courtship; where breeding has been documented in related Schistura, it follows the simple pattern of ripe fish releasing eggs over gravel in flowing water with no evident pairing ritual.

In the aquarium
Schistura sombooni is uncommon in the hobby, and there is little first-hand aquarium literature to draw on. What can be said follows from its biology and from general Schistura care: it is a small, active bottom-dweller that wants cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated flowing water over a soft substrate of sand and fine gravel, with smooth stones and driftwood to provide cover and grazing surface. Strong filtration with good current, rather than warm, still water, is the better match for a stream loach of this kind.
As a nemacheilid it shares the family's near-scaleless, medication-sensitive skin, so treatments should be dosed cautiously — copper-based medications and full-strength doses of many standard treatments are best avoided or halved. Given how little is documented about this specific species' temperament, a modest group in a species or quiet community tank of similarly sized, current-loving fish is a sensible, conservative approach rather than a documented requirement.
Conservation
Schistura sombooni is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the assessment dated to 2011 and no immediate conservation threats identified. This reflects a species restricted to particular basins within the Mekong drainage in Laos but not currently known to be in decline.
As with many small stream-restricted Southeast Asian loaches, its longer-term outlook is tied to the health of its home rivers — the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai systems have seen hydropower development in the region, and habitat alteration of this kind is the general pressure category to watch for narrow-range stream fish, even where a current assessment records no elevated risk. There is no indication in the available sources of significant aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species.
