Taxonomy & naming
Schistura obeini was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, part of his long-running work revising the stone loaches of Southeast Asia's Mekong drainage. It belongs to the genus Schistura within Nemacheilidae, the family of true stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species scattered from Anatolia to Japan. The species epithet honours François Obein, of the Nam Theun 2 Electricity Consortium in Vientiane, in recognition of field assistance given to Kottelat during his survey work in Laos.
As with many Schistura described from single river systems, the species has not needed the kind of large-scale generic reshuffling that overtook groups like the old Botia or Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex, but the genus itself remains a work in progress: new Schistura are still being split out of Laos, Vietnam and Thailand on a regular basis, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) remains the authority to check for the current valid combination.
Morphology
Schistura obeini is a small, elongate loach, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 4 in — modest even by stone-loach standards. Its most distinctive feature is a series of ten to seventeen sharply defined vertical dark brown bars along the sides, each wider than the pale interspace between them, giving the fish a strongly barred, almost zebra-like pattern; the head bears fine vermiculated markings rather than bars. A complete black bar crosses the base of the caudal fin. In life the colours are vivid: a bright red caudal fin set against bright yellow dorsal, anal, pelvic and pectoral fins, a combination that makes the species far showier than its obscurity would suggest. The lateral line runs complete along the flank.
Like other Nemacheilidae it has the family's typical benthic build — a rounded, faintly compressed body suited to holding position on the stream bed — and carries an erectile suborbital spine beneath the eye, used defensively and easily overlooked until the fish is handled. As in all loaches the skin is effectively naked, with tiny, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish, a point that matters for how the species should be treated with medications.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang rivers, headwater tributaries of the Mekong basin in Laos, with its type locality on the Nam Theun. This is classic stone-loach country: fast to very fast flowing water over a substrate of pebbles and stones, well oxygenated and typically clear. It is described as benthopelagic, holding position near the bottom in the current rather than schooling in open water.
As a tropical Southeast Asian headwater fish, its home water sits in the warm end of the loach spectrum rather than the cold high-altitude streams favoured by Himalayan Triplophysa — but it still depends on strong flow and high dissolved oxygen, the two things that most distinguish a hillstream-adjacent stone loach from a still-water fish. Beyond the two named rivers, essentially nothing has been published on seasonal habitat use, and the species should be treated as a narrow-range headwater endemic until more field data exists.
Feeding
Schistura obeini is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the pebble and stone substrate of its fast-flowing home streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans are the typical prey taken by Schistura species living in similar habitat, and FishBase lists the species at a middling trophic level consistent with this diet, though no detailed dietary study has been published for it specifically.
In the aquarium, hobbyist reporting describes it readily accepting sinking catfish pellets alongside frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia — food items that mirror its natural diet of small invertebrates picked from the stream bed. As with most stone loaches it is unlikely to compete well for food that floats or sits in open water, and feeding should target the bottom after lights-dim, when this largely nocturnal-leaning group is most active.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura obeini, and there is no reliable account of external sexual dimorphism for the species — a common gap for narrow-range stone loaches that have never been observed breeding in captivity or closely studied in the wild. Data on this front is genuinely sparse rather than simply unreported here.
What can be said follows the general pattern for Nemacheilidae: like other stone and brook loaches, any reproduction is expected to follow an egg-scattering strategy tied to the fast, well-oxygenated water the species is adapted to, rather than any form of nest-building, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour — those strategies belong to entirely different fish groups, not to true loaches.
Breeding
Schistura obeini has, as far as the record shows, never been bred in a home aquarium; the specialist hobby source consulted for this profile explicitly notes no documented aquarium spawnings. This fits the wider pattern for stone and brook loaches: as a family, Nemacheilidae are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and stones in fast water with no parental care, and successful captive spawnings are rare and poorly documented across almost the entire family, this species included.
There is no evidence of any commercial breeding program for the species either — unlike the clown loach or the algae-eating Gyrinocheilus, which are farmed at scale using hormone induction, Schistura obeini appears to enter the trade, when it appears at all, from wild collection in its native Laotian rivers rather than from any captive-breeding source.
In the aquarium
This is not an established aquarium fish, and keepers should treat any specimen as effectively wild-caught and poorly documented in captivity. Hobbyist guidance available for the species calls for a water temperature of 70–77 °F, a pH of 6.0–7.5, and soft to medium hardness (up to about 12 dH) — cooler and more current-dependent than the warm still water suited to many tropical community fish, reflecting its origin in fast Laotian headwater streams. A tank for it should replicate that current: decent flow, strong oxygenation, and a substrate of smooth sand or fine gravel that will not abrade its sensitive barbels.
Decor should include plenty of rounded rocks and pebbles, both to mimic the natural stream bed and to break line-of-sight between territories, since the species is reported to be territorial and not well suited to housing with shy or delicate tankmates. As with all Nemacheilidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the maximum size of roughly 4 in and its stream-adapted habits, a spacious, well-filtered, high-flow setup is essential; this is a specialist's fish, not a casual community addition.
Conservation
Schistura obeini is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, an assessment dating to 2011. That status should be read with some caution: the species is known only from two headwater rivers — the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang — in a single country, Laos, and narrow-range Southeast Asian headwater endemics of this kind can be vulnerable to dam construction, sedimentation and water diversion even where a Least Concern rating currently applies, particularly given hydropower development pressure in the Nam Theun watershed.
There is no evidence of significant aquarium trade pressure on the species — it is not established in the hobby, and no farmed or wild-collected supply chain is documented. The more relevant long-term risks are the same habitat pressures facing many Mekong headwater fishes: alteration of flow and water quality from infrastructure development within its very limited native range.
