Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus arenicolus was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1998 as part of his work revising the stone loaches of mainland Southeast Asia, based on material from the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai river basins in Laos. It sits in the genus Nemacheilus, within the family Nemacheilidae — a family that has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades as the old catch-all genera "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" were split apart, with many species moved into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera. N. arenicolus has kept its original placement in Nemacheilus.
The species epithet arenicolus is built from Latin arena ("sand") and -colus ("dwelling"), describing the sandy substrate the species is associated with in its home rivers. It is one of roughly a dozen Nemacheilus species recognized from mainland Southeast Asia, a group that includes similar small, cryptically patterned stream loaches such as N. masyae; formal comparative studies distinguishing these species are still limited.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Nemacheilus arenicolus is a slender, elongate, near-scaleless loach built for holding position on the bed of fast-flowing water rather than for open swimming. Available descriptions note a patterned body: roughly 8–13 large brown blotches running along the flank and 7–11 brown blotches along the back, giving a broken, mottled camouflage against a sandy or gravel river bed. Standard length has been recorded at around 1.5 in and upward, in keeping with the generally small size typical of Nemacheilidae.
As a nemacheilid, it would be expected to carry the family's characteristic barbels around the mouth for probing the substrate, and — as in many stone loaches — a small erectile spine below the eye is a plausible feature, though it is not specifically confirmed in the sources available for this species. Data on this species' fine anatomy remains sparse, and no aquarium-photography record could be confirmed to add further detail.
Habitat
Nemacheilus arenicolus is endemic to the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang rivers in Laos, part of the Xe Bangfai river basin in the Mekong drainage. These are fast-flowing, well-oxygenated Southeast Asian upland and foothill streams, and the species' own name — "sand-dwelling" — points to a life spent over coarse sand and gravel substrate rather than mud or leaf litter.
As with most Nemacheilidae, this is a cool-to-moderate, clear, current-swept stream fish, not a warm, still-water species. Specific published water-chemistry data (temperature range, pH) for this exact species could not be confirmed from available sources, so care parameters below are set conservatively in line with the family's known preference for flowing, oxygen-rich water rather than guessed at length.
Feeding
Nemacheilus arenicolus is presumed, on the strength of its family's well-documented habits, to be a benthic micro-predator: a fish that works over the sand and gravel of fast streams picking up small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items. In line with the rest of Nemacheilidae, a keeper would expect it to take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, small worms) and sinking prepared foods readily, while showing little interest in food left floating at the surface — but this is inference from the family rather than a documented account of this particular species.

Anyone who somehow encountered this species (most likely via a specialist Southeast-Asian stream-loach importer rather than general trade) should default to the well-established needs of small Nemacheilidae generally: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water; a soft sand or fine gravel substrate it can bury into or forage over; and a tank with strong flow and no aggressive tankmates, since these are small, unassuming fish easily outcompeted for food.
As with virtually all loaches, the near-scaleless skin typical of the family means medications should be dosed cautiously — but again, this is a general family caution rather than a point specifically verified for N. arenicolus, since it has essentially no documented aquarium history.
Conservation
Nemacheilus arenicolus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, an evaluation dated to 2013. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Nam Theun and Nam Gnouang rivers within the Xe Bangfai basin in Laos, its long-term status is nonetheless tied closely to the health of that specific river system — a region that, like much of the Mekong basin, faces pressure from hydropower development, land-use change and water-quality decline, though no species-specific population trend data is available.
The species has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade, so ornamental collection is not a documented pressure on its wild population; conservation attention, if any is warranted going forward, would properly focus on habitat protection within its home river basin rather than trade regulation.
