Schistura paucicincta is a diminutive stone loach known only from the Mae Nam Noi drainage, a tributary system feeding the Salween River along the Thailand–Myanmar border. Reaching barely 2 in, it is a bold little rheophile that spends its life gripping riffles of gravel and stone in fast-flowing water, picking insect larvae off the streambed. Described by Maurice Kottelat in 1990, it is one of hundreds of Schistura species in the sprawling family Nemacheilidae, most of them small, narrow-range endemics about which very little has been published. It is not established in the aquarium hobby, and much of its basic biology — including whether it has ever been bred in captivity — remains undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura paucicincta was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has absorbed a great deal of taxonomic reshuffling over the past few decades — many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed to Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera as the group was revised. No historical genus reassignment for this species turns up in the available literature; Schistura appears to be the only combination it has been placed in since its description, and the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for that placement.

The species epithet paucicincta is descriptive, built from Latin roots referring to the fish's pattern of body bars — a naming convention common across Schistura, where dozens of species are distinguished from one another largely by the number, width and completeness of their vertical bands. As with many members of this genus, S. paucicincta is a narrow-range endemic, and its taxonomic history is short simply because it has not attracted much research attention since Kottelat's original description.

Morphology

This is a small loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely from small fish. The body carries 6–7 wide dark bars, a pattern that likely inspired the species name. Diagnostic features noted from museum material include roughly 8.5 branched dorsal-fin rays, a processus dentiformis (a small toothlike projection used in Schistura taxonomy), an incomplete lateral line that reaches only to the tip of the pelvic fin, a complete black bar at the base of the caudal fin, an axillary pelvic lobe, and — notably — no suborbital flap in males, a feature that in other Schistura species can be used to sex mature fish.

Like other members of Nemacheilidae, S. paucicincta almost certainly carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and the thin, largely scaleless or fine-scaled skin that makes these fish sensitive to medication and disease — general genus-level traits, though no source specifically documents them for this species. Its small size and cryptic banding are consistent with a fish built to blend into gravel and shadow in fast, shallow water rather than to be conspicuous.

Habitat

Schistura paucicincta is endemic to the Mae Nam Noi drainage, a tributary system of the Salween River where it forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar. It has not been reported from anywhere else, which — combined with the general data scarcity around the species — makes it a textbook single-catchment endemic, a very common situation among Schistura.

Within that drainage it occupies moderate-to-fast-flowing streams, holding station in riffles over gravel and stone substrate, and it has also been found in small forest streams in very shallow water. This is benthopelagic, tropical rheophilic habitat: clear, well-oxygenated, current-swept water rather than the still, warm, tannin-stained pools associated with some other Southeast Asian fish. Nothing in the available sources suggests this species tolerates sluggish or standing water.

Feeding

Schistura paucicincta is a micro-predator of the streambed. FishBase records its diet as insect larvae, specifically Coleoptera (beetle larvae), gleaned from among the gravel and stones of the riffles it inhabits — the classic foraging strategy for a small, fast-water Nemacheilid that spends its life hugging the substrate against the current.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically, but its wild diet points clearly toward a bottom-feeding invertebrate hunter: it would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, and sinking foods that reach the bottom of a well-oxygenated tank, rather than surface flake, which a fish shaped and adapted for gravel-grubbing in fast current is unlikely to notice.

Mating

Almost nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura paucicincta. FishBase notes only a moderate resilience with a population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, which speaks to reproductive turnover at the population level but says nothing about how individual fish court or pair. No sexual dimorphism beyond the noted absence of a male suborbital flap has been documented, and there is no record of captive courtship to describe.

Given its placement in Schistura and its riffle-dwelling, current-loving habitat, its reproductive biology is presumed to follow the general genus pattern of egg-scattering in flowing water with no pair bond and no nest — but this is an inference from the wider genus, not a documented observation for this species. Data here is genuinely sparse.

Breeding

There is no documented aquarium breeding of Schistura paucicincta. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, it is presumed — by analogy with better-studied Schistura and Nemacheilidae relatives — to be an egg-scatterer that broadcasts eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. This species has not, however, been kept or bred in the hobby in any recorded way, so even that presumption should be read as an inference from genus-level pattern rather than a confirmed observation.

This is an honest gap rather than an oversight: the vast majority of Nemacheilidae, especially narrow-range stream endemics like this one, have never been spawned in captivity, and their reproductive biology is known — if at all — only from field notes on gonad condition or seasonal collection records. Anyone encountering this species in the trade should expect to keep it, not breed it.

In the aquarium

Schistura paucicincta is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no meaningful husbandry record to draw on. What can be inferred responsibly from its biology and from general Nemacheilidae care practice is limited but useful: this is a small (around 2 in), fast-water rheophile that needs cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated water with strong current and a substrate of gravel and stone to grip and forage over — not a warm, still community tank. Like other loaches, it should be assumed scaleless-sensitive to medication until proven otherwise, meaning careful, reduced-dose treatment rather than full-strength doses of copper-based or harsh medications.

Because it is a single-catchment endemic with essentially no aquarium history, anyone who does encounter it in the trade should treat it as a specialist fish: replicate a high-flow, well-oxygenated riffle setup with a mature biofilm on hard surfaces for it to graze incidentally, offer small sinking invertebrate foods, and expect that very little is known about its long-term needs in captivity. This is a fish better suited to specialist keepers with flow-tank experience than to general community aquaria.

Conservation

Schistura paucicincta is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, an assessment made in July 2011. Data Deficient does not mean the species is safe — it means there is not enough population, distribution or trend information to assign a category — and for a fish restricted to a single tributary drainage on an international border, that gap in knowledge is itself a reason for caution rather than reassurance.

Its entire known range is the Mae Nam Noi drainage of the Salween system, straddling Thailand and Myanmar. A species with such a restricted, single-catchment distribution is inherently vulnerable to any localized pressure — damming, deforestation, agricultural runoff or water extraction — even in the absence of a formal threatened listing. There is no evidence in the available sources of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its conservation profile is a story of undersurveyed range rather than documented decline.
