Taxonomy & naming
Hampala salweenensis was described by Doi and Taki in 1994 in the Japanese Journal of Ichthyology (volume 40, issue 4, pages 405–412), based on specimens from the Mae Pai River system in the Salween basin of northwestern Thailand. The type locality is the Mae Surin River, a branch of the Mae Pai, near Ban Huei Phan in Mae Hong Son Province. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Doi & Taki, 1994 as the valid authority, with the name unchanged since original description.
The genus Hampala belongs to the family Cyprinidae and groups a handful of medium to large predatory barbs distributed across the rivers of mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda shelf. Unlike the hundreds of small barbs formerly lumped in Puntius and subsequently redistributed across dozens of genera by Pethiyagoda and colleagues (2012 and onwards), Hampala was not part of that revision and has retained its identity as a distinct, well-characterised genus. Hampala salweenensis is notable within the genus for its restricted range in the Salween system, setting it apart from the wider-ranging H. macrolepidota and H. dispar of the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages.
Morphology
Hampala salweenensis is a moderately large barb reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 8 in (8 in) per aquarium records, with FishBase reporting a maximum of 12 in SL — a size plausible for a fully grown adult in its native river. Like other Hampala, it has a streamlined, fusiform body suited to life in fast-running rivers, with a relatively large terminal mouth reflecting its predatory feeding habits.
The genus Hampala is characterised by a black spot or band on the flank at roughly mid-body, a feature that distinguishes it from many other Asian cyprinids. Body coloration in H. salweenensis is not well documented in the hobbyist literature, and detailed fin counts or colour descriptions are not available in the accessible sources. The benthopelagic lifestyle inferred from its river habitat suggests it occupies the midwater to near-bottom zone in clear, current-exposed stretches.
Sexual dimorphism has been noted in Seriously Fish records: females become noticeably thicker-bodied when gravid, a pattern common across the Hampala complex and consistent with batch-spawning in a river fish that produces clutches timed to seasonal flow.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Salween drainage, with confirmed records from the Mae Pai River system (Mae Surin tributary, northwestern Thailand) and a tributary of the Nam Pang River in Shan State, Myanmar — both in the broader Salween basin. The Salween (known as the Thanlwin in Myanmar) is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in Southeast Asia, rising in Tibet and crossing Myanmar before entering the Andaman Sea; its upper Thai tributaries flow through montane terrain with clear, sediment-poor water.
SeriouslyFish records describe the habitat as clear, well-oxygenated running water with substrates of sand, gravel, rock and mud. The species is characterised as adaptable to both upland and lowland standing or flowing waters, though its natural context is riverine. Recorded water parameters span 68–79 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, and conductivity of 36–357 ppm (TDS), a wide range consistent with a fish that may encounter both softer headwater streams and more mineralised lowland reaches within the same basin system.
Feeding
Hampala salweenensis is a carnivore with a trophic level of 3.8 (FishBase), placing it firmly in the predator tier. Its diet in the wild covers small fish, aquatic insects and freshwater crustaceans — the typical prey spectrum for a river Hampala. The large terminal mouth and streamlined body are consistent with active pursuit of prey in flowing water rather than ambush from cover.
In aquaria, records indicate it accepts live and frozen foods readily: bloodworm, earthworms, prawn and mussel are all noted as suitable. Dried or pelleted staples may be accepted once the fish is settled, but meaty foods are preferred. Given the species' size potential, food items should be scaled accordingly as the fish grows, and small companion fish will be regarded as prey.
Mating
Reproduction in Hampala salweenensis is unrecorded in captivity per available sources. As a member of the family Cyprinidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of all true barbs — there is no nest construction, no mouthbrooding and no parental care of any kind in the group. Large river cyprinids such as Hampala are typically seasonal broadcast spawners that aggregate over gravel beds or in areas of flowing water to release eggs and milt together.
Courtship in related Hampala species involves driving behaviour, with males pursuing gravid females through the water column. In a river setting, spawning is likely to be cued by seasonal fluctuations — rising water temperature in late dry season or increasing river flow at the onset of the monsoon — though no direct observations are recorded for H. salweenensis specifically.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Hampala salweenensis has been documented in the available literature or hobbyist records. The species is poorly known in the aquarium hobby and is only rarely encountered in the trade. Extrapolating from the biology of congeners and from the general cyprinid model, breeding would require a spacious aquarium or pond, seasonal temperature cues, and likely a pronounced water-change to simulate rain-season onset.
Eggs would be scattered over substrate and given no parental care; adults would need to be separated from any eggs immediately after spawning to prevent predation. Until a successful captive spawning is documented and published, details of clutch size, incubation temperature, hatching interval and larval requirements remain unknown for this species.
In the aquarium
Hampala salweenensis is rarely seen in the aquarium hobby and is considered a poorly known species. SeriouslyFish notes it as only occasionally available and not commonly kept. When it does appear in trade, its adult size — potentially 8–12 in — means it requires a large aquarium with strong filtration and high dissolved oxygen, replicating the clear, well-oxygenated rivers of its native Salween basin.
The species is gregarious, forming shoals with an internal pecking order; groups of five or more individuals are recommended to distribute aggression. Being a predatory piscivore, it should not be housed with fish small enough to be eaten. Water parameters of 68–79 °F and pH 6.0–8.0 cover its documented field range and should be straightforward to maintain. A spacious, well-decorated tank with open midwater swimming space and some cover is appropriate. Diet in captivity centres on live and frozen meaty foods; the species has a medium resilience rating (population doubling time 1.4–4.4 years) suggesting it is not especially fast-growing or highly fecund.
Conservation
Hampala salweenensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 08 March 2011. The Data Deficient status reflects the species' very restricted known range and the limited field data available rather than any confirmed population decline — not enough is known about its abundance, population trend or extent of threats to assign it a threat category.
The Salween basin faces pressure from hydropower development: numerous dam projects have been proposed or are under construction on the main river and its tributaries in Myanmar and Thailand, with significant implications for the free-flowing riverine habitats on which species like H. salweenensis depend. The species' known range in the Mae Pai system and the Shan State tributaries sits within a geopolitically complex region where wildlife survey effort has historically been limited, and any future assessment would benefit greatly from fresh field surveys to establish baseline population data.
