Taxonomy & naming
Schistura reticulofasciata was described by Singh and Bănărescu in 1982, placing it from the outset in Schistura, one of the largest genera of stone loaches and part of the family Nemacheilidae — itself the largest of the loach families, encompassing hundreds of small, mostly stream-dwelling species across Asia. The Catalog of Fishes lists Schistura reticulofasciata (Singh & Bănărescu, 1982) as the currently valid combination, with the authority's parentheses omitted because the species has always stood in Schistura and was never shuffled through an older genus such as Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus, unlike many of its relatives.
The species epithet reticulofasciata combines Latin roots describing its colour pattern — a reticulated, net-like marking crossed by banding — which is also the character most useful for telling it apart from superficially similar Schistura in the same drainage. As with much of this genus, formal taxonomic attention has been limited to the original description and a small number of follow-up regional surveys and length-weight studies, rather than a full revision.
Morphology
Like other members of its enormous genus, Schistura reticulofasciata is a slender, elongate loach built for holding position on the bottom of fast water rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in total length and a maximum recorded weight of roughly 1.5 g, making it one of the smaller stone loaches even by the modest standards of Nemacheilidae. The body carries the reticulated, net-like banding pattern that gives the species its name, a common way stone loaches break up their outline against a pebbly streambed.
As in other true loaches, the skin is effectively naked — the scales are tiny, deeply embedded and easy to overlook — which leaves the fish sensitive to abrasion and to the shock of full-strength medications. Where present in the genus, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove below the eye, a defensive feature shared across Cobitoidea; specific documentation of the spine in this species is not available in the cache, but it should be assumed present and handled with the same care given to its relatives.
Habitat
This species is known from streams with pebbly bottoms in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, in the Brahmaputra river drainage of northeastern India — a region of fast, clear, well-oxygenated hill streams running off the Shillong Plateau. A length-weight study of specimens from the Simsang River in Meghalaya confirms its presence and habitat within this same Brahmaputra system. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical hill-stream conditions: cool-to-warm, clear, current-swept water over stone and gravel rather than the still, blackwater conditions associated with many lowland tropical fish.
The available range appears narrow, consistent with a species restricted to a discrete set of streams rather than one distributed broadly across the wider Brahmaputra basin. That narrow range is central to its conservation story: a fish tied to a handful of hill streams is far more exposed to local habitat disturbance than a widespread river species.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Schistura reticulofasciata was found in the available sources, but its build and habitat point clearly to the same feeding strategy seen across small-bodied Schistura: a benthic micro-predator picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items from among the pebbles and gravel of fast-flowing streams. Fish of this size and shape are not built for hunting in open water; they work the substrate.
In the aquarium, stone loaches of this kind generally accept small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and finely chopped invertebrate foods, along with sinking pellets sized appropriately for a fish under 2.5 in, but may show little interest in flake left to float at the surface.
Mating
No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour for this species appears in the available sources, and this is not unusual for a narrow-range hill-stream loach that has drawn only limited scientific study beyond its original description and regional occurrence records. Data here is genuinely sparse rather than simply omitted.
By analogy with better-studied stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), spawning in the wild is likely tied to seasonal flow and temperature cues in fast water, with no pair bond or courtship display beyond simple release and fertilisation of eggs over the substrate. This should be treated as an informed inference from the family rather than a confirmed account for this species.
Breeding
As with most stone and brook loaches, Schistura reticulofasciata is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium, and nothing in the available sources suggests otherwise. The expected pattern for the genus is an egg-scatterer: ripe adults release eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no nest, no pair bond and no parental care of eggs or fry afterward.
Given the species' narrow natural range and its status as a scientifically documented but hobby-obscure fish, any captive breeding would be effectively unrecorded territory. Keepers should not expect to breed it, and should treat any specimens in the trade as wild-collected rather than farm-raised.
In the aquarium
Schistura reticulofasciata has essentially no aquarium-keeping literature; it is known from scientific surveys rather than the hobby press, so care advice here is necessarily drawn from the requirements of its genus and family rather than from direct keeper experience with this exact species. As a small, fast-water hill-stream loach, it should be given cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated water with strong flow, a substrate of fine gravel and smooth stones, and the kind of biofilm-covered surfaces that stream loaches graze and forage over — not a warm, still, heavily planted community tank.
Being near-scaleless, like all true loaches it should be treated with caution around copper-based and full-strength medications, with reduced doses preferred. Given its small adult size of around 2.5 in, a modest but well-oxygenated, current-rich aquarium is appropriate, kept in a group as is typical good practice for small shoaling stream loaches, though specific social requirements for this species have not been documented.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura reticulofasciata as Vulnerable on 21 January 2010, under criteria B1ab(iii) and D2 — reflecting a small, restricted range and ongoing or projected decline in habitat quality. FishBase attributes the pressure on the species to unsustainable collection for the aquarium trade combined with habitat loss from deforestation in its Jaintia Hills range.
Because this is a narrow-range hill-stream endemic rather than a widespread species, both drivers matter: any specimens reaching the trade are very likely wild-collected from an already-restricted population, and deforestation in Meghalaya's hill catchments directly threatens the clear, stable streamflow this species depends on. There is no evidence in the available sources of captive-breeding programs or farmed supply that might relieve pressure on wild populations.
