Taxonomy & naming
Sunder Lal Hora described this species in 1921, placing it originally in the genus Lepidocephalus before the modern combination Lepidocephalichthys irrorata was settled under the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names. Older records and some database mirrors still carry the synonym Lepidocephalus irrorata, a reminder of how often the Cobitoidea's genus boundaries have been redrawn over the past century.
The species sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, alongside temperate genera such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the weather loaches of Misgurnus. Lepidocephalichthys itself is an Asian tropical genus, and irrorata remains the accepted name for this species with no recent split or revision noted in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small loach, reaching only about 1 in standard length — among the tiniest fish in the spined-loach family, closer in scale to a large Pygmy species than to its bigger Cobitidae cousins. As a true loach it carries the family's signature erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive blade folded into a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out when the fish is handled or threatened, and it shares the near-scaleless, delicate skin typical of the group.
Males and females differ noticeably: males develop enlarged pectoral fins with the 7th and 8th rays thickened into a lamina circularis, a structure typical of the genus and thought to play a role in courtship or substrate contact, while females grow heavier-bodied and larger overall. This dimorphism is one of the more reliable sexing cues among small Asian loaches.
Habitat
Lepidocephalichthys irrorata is native to the Brahmaputra River basin, with confirmed records from the Muhuri and Sylhet river systems in Bangladesh and from Meghalaya, Manipur and Assam in northeastern India. The type locality is Loktak Lake in Manipur, a large freshwater lake system that gives the species its common name.
It occupies shallow, slow-moving stream sections, swamps, oxbow lakes, backwaters and vegetated paddy-field margins rather than fast hillstream flow — soft, silty or sandy substrates with cover from aquatic plants and detritus. This is a lowland, warm-water habitat, not the cool, high-oxygen torrent environment of hillstream loaches, and the species should be understood as tropical rather than coldwater.
Feeding
In the wild this is a sand-sifting micropredator, working through soft substrate in search of small invertebrates rather than grazing biofilm or algae. It forages by working its barbels and snout through sand and silt, picking out tiny worms, insect larvae, crustaceans and other benthic prey hidden in the substrate.
In the aquarium it takes sinking dried foods readily but does best with a regular supply of small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworm, which mimic its natural diet far more closely than flake or pellet alone. A soft sand substrate is important not just for comfort but for feeding — without it, this species cannot forage the way it is built to.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism gives keepers a workable way to identify potential pairs: males are marked out by their enlarged pectoral fins and thickened lamina-circularis rays, while females run larger and heavier-bodied. Beyond that visible difference, courtship and spawning behaviour in Lepidocephalichthys irrorata has not been documented in the aquarium literature consulted here.
As with the great majority of small tropical Cobitidae, there is no confirmed account of home spawning to draw on. What can be said with confidence, based on the breeding biology of the wider spined-loach family, is that any reproduction would follow the group's pattern of egg-scattering over vegetation or substrate with no parental care — not a nest-guarding or mouthbrooding strategy, which do not occur in this family.
Breeding
Cobitidae as a family are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among plants or fine substrate and provide no further care. That pattern holds for the family's temperate members — several species of Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, generally cued by a seasonal temperature or photoperiod shift typical of their cooler native ranges.
The tropical genera tell a different story. Lepidocephalichthys irrorata, like the horseface loach Acantopsis, has no recorded history of aquarium breeding in the sources available here. Being honest about that gap matters: this is a species kept and admired for its natural behaviour, not one with an established home-spawning protocol, and any keeper attempting it would be working essentially without precedent.
In the aquarium
Its small adult size (1 in SL) makes Lepidocephalichthys irrorata one of the more modest-footprint loaches to keep, but its needs are still specific. A soft, fine sand substrate is non-negotiable — this is a burrowing sand-sifter, and coarse gravel denies it the ability to forage or bury itself, which is its default response to stress or bright light. Warm water in the 68–77 °F range with a soft, slightly acidic to neutral pH (roughly 5.5–7.5) suits it best, kept in a well-planted, gently flowing setup that echoes its native streams and swamps rather than a fast hillstream torrent.
As with all Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle, targeted products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary. It is a shy, largely nocturnal or crepuscular fish that appreciates cover — leaf litter, fine driftwood roots and dense low planting — and, like most small loaches, does best in a same-species group rather than as a singleton, giving it the confidence to forage openly rather than staying buried.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lepidocephalichthys irrorata as Least Concern globally, reflecting a range that spans multiple river systems across northeastern India and Bangladesh rather than a single vulnerable population. Regionally, however, the picture is more cautious: Bangladeshi conservation sources list the species as Data Deficient within that country specifically, indicating that local population data has not been sufficient to assign a confident status there.
The species is tied closely to shallow wetland habitats — swamps, oxbows, paddy-field margins — that are broadly vulnerable to drainage, agricultural conversion and pollution across the Brahmaputra basin, even though no acute decline has been documented for this species specifically. There is no evidence in the sources consulted of significant aquarium-trade pressure on wild populations; it remains a lightly traded species known mainly to specialist loach keepers.
