Taxonomy & naming
Schistura rubrimaculata was described in 2013 by Sven O. Kullander's collaborators Bohlen and Ŝlechtová as one of two new Schistura species from Myanmar, published in a paper on Nemacheilidae from the Irrawaddy drainage. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one that has absorbed most of the species once lumped into the old catch-all genus Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, lists the species as Schistura rubrimaculata with no synonyms recorded.
The genus Schistura is enormous and taxonomically active, with new species described from Himalayan foothill and Southeast Asian streams on a near-annual basis; this species is a comparatively recent and minor addition, described from a small collection rather than from long-standing museum material. There is no older combination to correct here — it has been placed in Schistura since its original description.
Morphology
This is a slender, small-bodied stone loach, with a body depth running 103–123% of the depth at the nape. Reported maximum size differs slightly between sources — the original description gives 1 in standard length, while FishBase lists a maximum of 1.5 in total length — but by either measure this is one of the smaller Schistura, a fish that would sit comfortably on a fingertip. In life the ventral side is white with a silvery sheen, and a prominent black midlateral stripe runs the length of the body beneath up to six dorsal saddle markings; all fins are hyaline (clear). The namesake feature is a distinct red spot on the caudal peduncle, visible in freshly collected fish but which fades once preserved in alcohol — the reason the original describers reached for ruber, Latin for red, in naming it.
Like other members of its family, Schistura rubrimaculata carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of the Cobitoidea and the near-scaleless skin common to small stream loaches, a combination that makes members of this genus quick to net-snag if handled carelessly and sensitive to strong medication — though in this species' case that is inference from the family rather than anything documented specifically, since it has no aquarium-keeping history to draw on.
Habitat
Schistura rubrimaculata is known from the Man Chaung and Shwe Chaung stream systems on the eastern slope of the Rakhine (Yoma) range in western Myanmar, which drain into the Irrawaddy River, and from a documented range extension into the Chindwin Basin of Manipur in northeast India. It lives in shallow, clear, fast-flowing water over gravel and stone substrates — classic small hillstream and foothill-brook habitat, and a benthic microhabitat it shares with most of its Schistura relatives.
No aquarium or field temperature data has been published for this species specifically. Its native streams sit in the seasonally monsoonal hill country of the Myanmar–India border, where highland and foothill streams typically run cool to warm depending on season and elevation rather than staying uniformly warm — the honest position is that specific figures are not available, and a keeper or researcher should not assume tropical-aquarium warmth by default for a fish from this kind of habitat.
Feeding
FishBase places Schistura rubrimaculata at a trophic level consistent with an insectivore, and its gravel-and-stone microhabitat in fast, clear water fits the profile shared by nearly every small Schistura: a benthic micro-predator picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items from the streambed. No aquarium diet has ever been recorded for it, since the species has not been kept.
In the absence of direct data, the safest inference — drawn from its habitat and from the diet of its many close relatives — is that it would take small live and frozen foods readily and largely ignore flake or dried foods sitting at the surface, as most gravel-picking stone loaches do. This is inference from the genus, not a documented fact about this particular species.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour in Schistura rubrimaculata. It has never been kept or bred in the aquarium, and the original description — based on a small series of preserved specimens — does not report reproductive observations. This is a genuinely data-sparse point in the species' biology, and it would be dishonest to fill the gap with details borrowed from better-known loaches.
Breeding
No breeding has ever been recorded for this species, in the wild or in captivity, and it has no history in the aquarium trade to draw on. The most that can honestly be said is inferred from its family and genus: stone and brook loaches of the Nemacheilidae are, as a rule, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and they are rarely bred even when they do reach hobbyist tanks. Schistura rubrimaculata almost certainly follows this pattern, but that is an inference from its relatives rather than a documented observation of this species itself — there is no evidence it has ever spawned under human care.
In the aquarium
Schistura rubrimaculata is not, and to date has never been, an aquarium fish. It does not appear in the ornamental trade, and none of the available literature — the original description or subsequent range-extension notes — documents any aquarium husbandry. There is accordingly no care profile to offer here.
What can be said, extrapolated cautiously from its close Schistura relatives and its stone-and-gravel, fast-flowing habitat, is that a species like this would need cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, current-swept water over a hard substrate rather than a warm, still, planted community tank — the opposite of what a typical beginner setup offers. As with other small, near-scaleless loaches, careful, reduced-strength medication would be the expected caution if it were ever kept. None of this is a substitute for real husbandry data, which simply does not exist for this species.
Conservation
Schistura rubrimaculata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from a small number of streams on the eastern slope of the Rakhine range in Myanmar, with one confirmed range extension into the Chindwin Basin in Manipur, India — a narrow, poorly surveyed distribution typical of many recently described Schistura.
Because the species has never entered the aquarium trade, there is no ornamental collection pressure to report. Any conservation concern would instead follow the general pressures facing small streams in this part of Myanmar and northeast India — deforestation, agricultural runoff and water-course modification — but no species-specific population data or threat assessment exists to support a more precise statement. This is a case where the responsible position is to record what is unknown rather than assume a status.
