Taxonomy & naming
Physoschistura raoi was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1929, from material collected at Mongyai in the Northern Shan States of Myanmar. It sits in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with several hundred described species spread across Eurasia and, unusually for the group, one genus in Africa. Physoschistura is one of many genera carved out of the old catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus over the twentieth century as the family was progressively split; species-level taxonomy in this group continues to be revised as material is re-examined, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination.
The species epithet honours Professor Dr H. Srinivasa Rao (1894–1971), an Indian zoologist known for his work on faunistic morphology — a common practice in this era of Indian and Southeast Asian ichthyology, naming new species after respected colleagues. Physoschistura as a genus is centred on the upper Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween and Mekong river systems of eastern Myanmar and adjacent areas, and P. raoi's type locality places it squarely in that Irrawaddy-drainage range.
Morphology
Physoschistura raoi is a tiny fish even by stone-loach standards, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. Like other members of its family it has the classic nemacheilid build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical, torpedo-shaped body suited to holding position and darting through current, a flattened underside for gripping the substrate, and a small, low-slung mouth with barbels for detecting food on the streambed. Nemacheilids lack the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra and kin) — that spine is a Botiidae trait, not a Nemacheilidae one — and their skin is likewise thin-scaled to effectively scaleless, leaving them, like most loaches, sensitive to harsh medication.

Habitat
