Taxonomy & naming
Schistura tenebrosa was formally described in 2012 by Kangrang, Page and Beamish in the journal Zootaxa (volume 3586, pages 69–77), one of a wave of new Schistura species split out as researchers surveyed the stream drainages of mainland Southeast Asia in fine detail. The genus Schistura itself was carved out of the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus grouping and now stands as one of the most species-rich genera in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, with well over 190 recognized members.
The species epithet tenebrosa is Latin for "dark" or "gloomy," a direct reference to the fish's uniform dusky-brown coloration — it lacks the bars, blotches or stripes that mark many of its relatives. The holotype is deposited at the University of Florida (UF 181417), with paratypes held at UF, the National Inland Fisheries Institute (NIFI), the Smithsonian (USNM) and the Zoological Reference Collection in Singapore (ZRC).
Morphology
This is a very small loach even by Schistura standards: the type series measured up to about 2 in standard length (2 in total length). The body is uniformly dusky brown without the bold banding or blotching seen in many stone loaches, giving it a plain, shadowy appearance that matches its name. A notable diagnostic feature is a conspicuous set of supplementary neuromasts running along the lateral line and over the head — sensory pits that help the fish detect water movement and prey in fast, often turbid riffle flow.
As in other Schistura and Nemacheilidae generally, the skin carries only minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally naked — a trait shared across the stone-loach family that has real consequences for disease treatment. Many species in this genus and family also carry a small erectile spine below the eye, though it is far less developed than the prominent suborbital spine of the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo and skunk loaches).
Habitat
Schistura tenebrosa is known only from its type locality: the Pakkok River, part of the Kwai Noi River system within the Mae Khlong basin, in Thong Pha Phum district of Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand. It lives on shallow gravel and rubble riffles in small streams — the classic stone-loach microhabitat, where current is brisk and the substrate is coarse and well-oxygenated.
Water at the type locality was recorded at 73–79 °F (varying with season), pH close to neutral (about 7.0), dissolved oxygen 8.2–8.5 mg/L and zero measurable ammonia — cool-to-mild, clear, fast-flowing, pristine stream water, not the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with many other tropical Asian aquarium fish. As a narrow-range stream endemic, its known distribution is confined to this one river system, and nothing in the available literature suggests it occurs more widely.
Feeding
Schistura tenebrosa is a benthic micro-predator, in keeping with the rest of its genus: it forages over gravel and rubble for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — picked from between and beneath the stones of fast riffle water. The dense array of neuromasts on its head and flanks likely helps it detect prey by water-borne vibration in turbulent, sometimes low-visibility flow, a common adaptation among riffle-dwelling nemacheilids.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically, but a fish built and adapted this way would be expected to take small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small worms — readily, and sinking foods generally, while showing little interest in flake left on the surface.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for Schistura tenebrosa; the original description is a taxonomic account of a small, recently collected type series and does not report reproductive observations. Nothing distinguishes males from females in the available record, and no external sexual dimorphism has been reported.
Across the genus Schistura and the wider family Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no courtship display or nest-building beyond finding suitable current and substrate. There is no reason to expect S. tenebrosa departs from this pattern, but it has not been directly observed.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Schistura and other Nemacheilidae, Schistura tenebrosa is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and breeding data for the species is sparse to nonexistent beyond genus-level inference. Stone and brook loaches in general scatter eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water and provide no parental care afterward — there is no nest-guarding, no mouthbrooding, and no cave-spawning behavior of the kind seen in some other freshwater fish groups.
Given the species' very restricted known range, small adult size, and complete absence from the hobby and breeding literature, the honest statement is that its reproductive biology in captivity is essentially undocumented. Any successful spawning would likely require the cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated conditions of its native riffle habitat, which are difficult to replicate and rarely offered to loaches of this kind in the aquarium trade.
In the aquarium
Schistura tenebrosa has no established presence in the aquarium hobby — there is no hobbyist care profile, no trade history, and no evidence it has been kept or exported. It is included here as a taxonomically documented species rather than as a proven aquarium fish, and any care advice must be extrapolated cautiously from its habitat and from the genus as a whole.
Were it ever to appear in the trade, its biology points clearly to a specialist setup: cool-to-mild, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated water over coarse gravel and rubble, not a warm, still community tank. Like other nemacheilids it would be essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, warranting the same caution used with other stone and hillstream loaches — gentle products and reduced doses. Given its tiny recorded size (under 2 in), it would suit only a dedicated cool-stream biotope, not a general community setup.
Conservation
Schistura tenebrosa has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species described only in 2012 and known from a single river system in Kanchanaburi Province, it is a textbook case of a data-sparse stream endemic — too recently documented, and too narrowly distributed, to have yet received formal conservation review.
No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for this species in the available literature. Its entire known range lies within the Kwai Noi River system of the Mae Khlong basin, a drainage subject to the same general pressures — damming, agricultural runoff, deforestation — that affect freshwater systems across western Thailand, but no source documents a specific impact on this species. Given the total absence of trade or aquarium-collection records, there is no evidence the ornamental trade poses any pressure on it.
