Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis is a small stone loach described only in 2015, when Rachel Singer and Lawrence Page split the "zipper loach" complex of Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis into several distinct species across mainland Southeast Asia. It is known from the Mae Khlong River basin of Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, a system of clear, fast-flowing streams over rock, pebble and sand. Like other members of the family Nemacheilidae, it is a slim, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for gripping a current rather than cruising open water, and — as is typical for a narrow-range stream loach described this recently — much of its natural history away from the type description remains undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis was described by Rachel Singer and Lawrence M. Page in 2015 as one of five new species erected in a revision of the "zipper loaches," the genera Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis, within the family Nemacheilidae. Before that revision, Mae Khlong basin populations of this group had generally been folded into wider-ranging, poorly resolved species concepts; the 2015 study used detailed morphological comparison to show that the Mae Khlong population was a distinct, geographically restricted species and gave it the epithet maekhlongensis, tying the name directly to its type river system.

The genus Paracanthocobitis sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest family of true loaches, with hundreds of small, mostly stream-dwelling species across Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis; older literature that predates the 2015 split would not have distinguished this species from its congeners under the older, broader names.

Morphology

This is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reaching only about 3 in in standard length. The original description separates it from close relatives by a combination of fine details: males possess a suborbital groove, the pelvic fin carries 7 rays, the dorsal fin has 12.5–13.5 branched rays, and the body pattern consists of thin dorsal saddles with light spots that connect to a row of irregular blotches along the flank, with a distinct large, round black spot near the dorsal margin of the caudal peduncle.

Like other nemacheilids it has the low-slung, faintly compressed body typical of the family, built to hug the substrate in current rather than swim in open water. Many stone and brook loaches, including species in this genus, carry a small erectile suborbital spine and have reduced or embedded scaling, leaving the skin close to naked — a trait that matters for husbandry, since scaleless and near-scaleless loaches are markedly more sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications than scaled fish.

Habitat

Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis is endemic to the Mae Khlong River basin in Kanchanaburi Province, western Thailand, and has not been recorded from other systems. The basin's smaller streams and rivers that its relatives and congeners in the region occupy are typically clear and fast-flowing, running over rocky, pebbly or sandy bottoms with little rooted vegetation but real accumulations of leaf litter and organic debris, and often shaded by trees and shrubs along the banks — classic conditions for the riffle-dwelling small Nemacheilidae, which favor shallow gravel and rubble riffles in flowing water.

Detailed temperature and water-chemistry data specific to this species have not been published. A related Mae Khlong basin endemic loach in the same general habitat is reported to prefer roughly 77–86 °F, and that range is a reasonable proxy for the basin's lowland tropical streams, but it should be read as basin-typical rather than species-verified. What is well established is that this is a fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, clear-stream species, not a still-water or blackwater fish.

Feeding

As with most small Nemacheilidae, Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis is best understood as a benthic micro-predator, working the gravel and rubble of its home riffles for small invertebrates and insect larvae rather than grazing algae or browsing plant matter. Species-specific dietary data for this particular fish have not been published, but this feeding mode is consistent across its genus and family.

In the aquarium, stone loaches of this kind generally do well on small sinking foods — frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and quality sinking pellets or wafers — offered at the bottom where they forage. They are unlikely to compete well for food at the surface or in the water column, and may largely ignore flake left to drift, so target feeding at substrate level is the safer approach.

Mating

No published account describes courtship or spawning behavior specific to Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis; data on reproduction in this species is sparse to the point of being effectively absent from the literature reviewed here. Sexual dimorphism is limited to the diagnostic suborbital groove noted in males in the original description, which may play a role in male behavior but has not been documented as such.

What can be said comes from the wider pattern in small stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae: where breeding has been observed at all, it typically follows rises in flow and is not accompanied by any elaborate pair-bonding or nest-building — a pattern consistent with, but not confirmed for, this species.

Breeding

Breeding in Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis has not been documented, and this species should be assumed unbred in the hobby. The general pattern across stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry; spawning in the wild is generally associated with periods of higher flow rather than any nest or territory. Confirmed home aquarium spawnings of small Nemacheilidae in general are rare, and this narrow-range, recently described species is no exception.

Given the complete absence of published breeding data for this species specifically, keepers should treat any offer of captive-bred stock with caution and expect that specimens in the trade, where they appear at all, are wild-collected rather than farm- or hobby-bred.

In the aquarium

This is a small, active stream fish and should be kept accordingly: a tank with a strong current, high dissolved oxygen, and a substrate of smooth gravel, pebbles and sand that lets it forage and wedge itself against the flow. A powerhead or spray bar aimed to create real current, along with rounded river stones and driftwood offering current breaks, will suit it far better than a calm, still community setup. Like many small Nemacheilidae it is likely to appreciate the company of its own kind, though schooling behavior has not been specifically documented for this species.

As with many loaches, reduced or fine scaling in this family group means sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments is a reasonable precaution even without species-specific data — dose cautiously and monitor closely if treatment is needed. Because so little is published about this exact species' temperature and water-chemistry tolerances, keepers should err toward the cooler, well-oxygenated, clear-running conditions typical of its basin rather than assume it tolerates warm, still water.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis maekhlongensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species currently known only from the Mae Khlong River basin in Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, it is, by definition, a narrow-range endemic, and stream endemics of this kind are typically exposed to whatever local pressures affect their home basin — water abstraction, siltation, damming and habitat alteration — even though no formal assessment has quantified those risks for this particular species.

No data reviewed here indicates this species is a significant part of the aquarium trade; it is a taxonomically recent split of a wider species complex, and its natural history, population status and any collecting pressure remain essentially undocumented outside of the original taxonomic description.
