Taxonomy & naming
Schistura waltoni was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1937 and placed from the outset in Schistura, a large genus of Old World stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae — itself split out from the old, broader "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" grouping that once lumped together most of Eurasia's slender loaches. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, confirms Schistura waltoni as the currently accepted combination, and GBIF's taxonomic backbone likewise lists it without synonymy under this name.
Nemacheilidae is now recognized as the largest of the loach families by species count, a sprawling and still actively revised group spread across South, Southeast and East Asia. Schistura itself is one of its biggest genera, and species-level identification within it is difficult and often requires close attention to fin-ray counts, body banding and lateral-line details — traits that are easy to conflate between superficially similar streambed loaches.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, laterally compact loach built for clinging to a fast-flowing streambed rather than for open swimming. FishBase records a maximum size of about 3 in standard length, with the hobby trade citing total lengths up to roughly 3.5 in — a genuinely modest fish, well short of the botiids and hillstream loaches that dominate people's mental image of the group.
As a nemacheilid it carries the family's near-scaleless skin, a trait that matters enormously for how the fish should be kept and medicated. Available sources do not describe an erectile suborbital spine for this species with certainty; where the trait is confirmed in related stone loaches it functions as a defensive structure rather than a weapon, and is not something keepers need to worry about in daily handling. Habitat
Schistura waltoni is native to the Chao Phraya basin of Thailand — recorded from the Mae Nam Ping, Mae Nam Wang and Mae Nam Yom tributaries — with a further range extension into China. It lives in fast-flowing mountain and foothill streams over beds of gravel and rock, often in shallow, shaded forest-stream reaches where current and oxygenation are high and the water runs clear.
This is a cool-to-moderate flowing-water fish, not a warm, still blackwater species: hobby sources give a working range of about 70–79 °F with soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water (pH roughly 6–7.5, hardness up to about 12 dH). Recreating a brook or hillstream setup — strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, a rock-and-gravel substrate — tracks its wild habitat far more closely than a standard tropical community tank does.
Feeding
In the wild, Schistura waltoni feeds on insects and other small invertebrates picked from the stream bed, the classic micro-predator diet of fast, clear-water nemacheilids. It is not a grazer working a biofilm surface in the way many hillstream loaches are; it is hunting small prey items among the gravel and cobbles.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets and flake as a base diet but does best with regular frozen and live foods that echo its natural prey — mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and Daphnia are all taken readily according to hobbyist sources. Food should reach the bottom, since this is a benthic feeder that will not compete well for anything left floating in a strong current.
Mating
No sources in hand describe sexual dimorphism, courtship or spawning behaviour for Schistura waltoni specifically. Data for this species is genuinely sparse — it is known largely from a handful of Thai and Chinese river systems, and, as with many stone loaches, its reproductive biology has not been closely studied in the wild or observed in captivity.

In the aquarium
Schistura waltoni suits a dedicated brook- or hillstream-style setup rather than a generic community tank: strong water flow, high oxygenation, a substrate of smooth gravel and rounded stones, and multiple hiding spots such as bogwood, caves and cobbles for this territorial little loach to claim as its own. Loaches Online notes it holds territory and appreciates several such refuges spread through the tank rather than one obvious cave everyone fights over.
Being near-scaleless, like all nemacheilids, it is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many general treatments — half-doses and gentle, loach-safe products are the safer default if disease treatment becomes necessary. Keep the water on the cooler side of typical tropical norms (around 70–79 °F) rather than pushing it warm, and feed a mix of sinking prepared foods with regular live or frozen invertebrate meals to match its natural micro-predator diet.
Conservation
Schistura waltoni is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, last assessed in 2022 under the IUCN 2022.2 report cycle; it has not been evaluated under CITES or CMS. A Data Deficient rating is an honest reflection of how little population, trend or threat data exists for a stream-restricted loach of this kind, rather than evidence that the species is secure.
Its known range across tributaries of the Chao Phraya basin in Thailand, plus a documented occurrence in China, places it in river systems subject to the general pressures facing Southeast Asian freshwater habitats — damming, agricultural runoff and forest clearance along smaller tributary streams — though no source here quantifies a specific threat or population trend for this species.
