Taxonomy & naming
Sectoria atriceps was described by the ichthyologist Hugh M. Smith in 1945. It belongs to the genus Sectoria within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with genera scattered from the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau across South and Southeast Asia and west into the Middle East and Europe. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid combination Sectoria atriceps.
Nemacheilid taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled over the past few decades, with many species once lumped under broad genera such as Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus later redistributed into narrower genera like Schistura, Barbatula and Triplophysa as the family's true diversity became clearer. Sectoria is a comparatively small, less-discussed genus within that reshuffling, and Sectoria atriceps has kept its original combination since 1945 without a documented change in genus.
Morphology
Sectoria atriceps is a small, elongate stone loach, reported to reach a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length — among the smaller members of an already small-bodied family. As in other nemacheilids, both jaws are covered by a horny sheath with sharp cutting edges, an adaptation for scraping algae and biofilm (aufwuchs) from hard surfaces rather than the barbel-assisted probing typical of many other loach groups.
Detailed morphological data beyond this is sparse in the available literature; like many single-basin nemacheilid endemics it has not attracted the descriptive attention given to larger or more widely traded loaches. Where the broader family pattern applies — a near-scaleless body and an erectile suborbital spine in many stone-loach relatives — specific confirmation for this species is not established in the sources consulted here, so it is noted as a family trait rather than asserted for Sectoria atriceps directly.
Habitat
This species is known from the Chao Phraya basin of Thailand, one of Southeast Asia's major river systems. It inhabits small streams roughly 3–5 metres wide within narrow valleys, no more than about 23.5 in deep, with moderate to swift current. Within these streams it uses two distinct microhabitats: riffles with a swift current over boulders and pebbles, and calmer pools with a sandy or pebble substrate.
This is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-dwelling) species of cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing stream water — not a still, warm blackwater habitat. As with many single-basin nemacheilid records, the full extent of its range within the Chao Phraya system and its tolerance for habitat variation are not well documented, and it should be treated as a genuinely data-sparse species rather than assumed to be widespread.
Feeding
Sectoria atriceps is herbivorous to detritivorous. Stomach-content examination of a wild specimen (1.5 in SL) found only vegetable remains, consistent with the horny jaw sheaths typical of the genus, which are used to scrape algae, biofilm and organic detritus from submerged sand, pebbles and boulders in its riffle and pool habitats.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species. Based on its wild diet, a captive individual would be expected to need access to grazable surfaces — algae and biofilm growth on rock and hardscape — supplemented with small sinking foods, rather than a diet built around meaty or flake foods.
Mating
No courtship, spawning trigger, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Sectoria atriceps in the sources available. As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, this is very likely a fish that has never been observed spawning in captivity, and field observations of its reproductive behaviour in the Chao Phraya basin are not recorded in the literature consulted here.
In the absence of species-specific data, the safest statement is the general pattern for Nemacheilidae: egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in flowing water, timed to seasonal rains or flow changes, with no parental investment beyond releasing the eggs. Breeding
There is no documented record of Sectoria atriceps being bred in the aquarium. Like the overwhelming majority of stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, but this species-specific breeding behaviour has not been described in the available sources.
Given how little is published on this species even in the wild, hobbyist or commercial breeding should be considered essentially unattempted and unrecorded. Any captive spawning would be a novel observation worth documenting rather than an expected outcome of standard care.
In the aquarium
Sectoria atriceps is not established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry records were found in the sources consulted. Its wild profile — a small (under 2 in), algae-and-detritus grazing stone loach from swift, well-oxygenated, moderate-temperature Thai stream riffles and pools — implies that any captive attempt would need to replicate strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, a mixed sand/pebble/boulder substrate, and continuous grazable algae growth rather than a still, decorated community tank.
As with other members of the stone-loach family, a near-scaleless body is common in the group and would call for caution with medications (particularly copper-based treatments and full-strength doses) if this species were ever kept — though this is a general family caution rather than data confirmed for Sectoria atriceps specifically. In practice, this is a research and survey record rather than a hobby fish, and anyone encountering it in the trade should treat it as an unusual, poorly documented find rather than assume standard stone-loach care advice has been tested on it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Sectoria atriceps as Data Deficient (DD), as of a 2011 evaluation according to FishBase — there is not enough information on its population size, range extent or trend to assign a threat category. This is a common outcome for narrow-range nemacheilid stream endemics, which are rarely surveyed and easily overlooked.
Because the species is tied to small streams within the Chao Phraya basin, a system under substantial pressure from damming, agricultural runoff, and urbanisation across central Thailand, its true conservation status could plausibly be more concerning than "Data Deficient" suggests — but without dedicated survey work this remains speculation rather than an assessed finding. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its main documented risk pathway, if any, would be habitat degradation within its home streams.
