Traccatichthys bacmeensis is a small stone loach known only from a single stream system in northern Vietnam — the kind of narrowly endemic Nemacheilidae species that makes up the bulk of this, the largest loach family, yet almost never appears in the hobby or the literature. It was described in 2005 from the Minh Son stream near Bac Me, in the upper Gam River basin of Ha Giang Province, and the type series has since been lost, with a neotype designated in 2014. Beyond its original description and a bare-bones FishBase entry, essentially nothing has been published on its size, water preferences or breeding — this is a genuinely data-sparse fish, and the honest article about it is a short one.

Taxonomy & naming

Traccatichthys bacmeensis was described by Nguyen and Vo in 2005, originally placed in the genus Micronemacheilus as Micronemacheilus bacmeensis. Like much of the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae, the genus-level classification of Vietnamese and neighbouring Chinese species has been repeatedly revised as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; this species was subsequently moved into Traccatichthys, the combination now used in the taxonomic literature and followed here.

The original type series was lost, and a neotype was designated by Endruweit in 2014 to stabilise the name — a housekeeping step common in this family, where many species were described from small numbers of specimens collected on brief expeditions to remote streams. The species epithet bacmeensis refers to the type locality, Bac Me County in Ha Giang Province, northern Vietnam.

Morphology

As a member of Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, Traccatichthys bacmeensis has the family's typical build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and paired fins used to brace against current rather than to swim in open water. The original description gives a holotype of 3.5 in standard length with paratypes ranging 3–3.5 in SL, so this is a modest-sized loach by family standards, though no separate maximum-length figure has been published since.

Like its relatives it is presumed to carry the erectile suborbital spine typical of the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and — as with virtually all true loaches — its skin is effectively naked, covered only in small, deeply embedded scales rather than a protective scale layer. Beyond the measurements in the original description, no detailed account of colour pattern or fin morphology has been published; further specifics are simply not documented in the sources available here.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Minh Son stream near Bac Me, in the upper reaches of the Gam River — a tributary of the Lo River system — in Ha Giang Province, northern Vietnam. This places it in a cool-to-warm, fast-flowing, clear headwater stream typical of the hill country of northern Vietnam, the kind of oxygen-rich water that Nemacheilidae species across Asia are adapted to hold position in.

No published data describe the stream's temperature, pH or substrate in detail. Given the family's general ecology and the northern Vietnamese highland setting, a clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated stream with a rocky or gravel bed is the reasonable inference, but this article does not assert numbers beyond what has actually been measured and published.

Feeding

No dietary study specific to Traccatichthys bacmeensis has been published. FishBase lists a trophic level of 2.7, consistent with a lower-level consumer — in line with the family's general habit as benthic micro-predators that pick small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items off the streambed in fast, clear water.

In the absence of direct observation, the safest statement is the family default: a bottom-foraging micro-predator of small aquatic invertebrates, rather than an algae grazer or a fish that relies on drifting plant matter. Any aquarium diet would need to follow that pattern, though this species is not known to be kept.

Mating

No information on sexual dimorphism, courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for this species. It has not been recorded in aquarium literature, and the original taxonomic description — focused on distinguishing morphological characters for identification — does not address reproductive biology.

Breeding

Nothing specific has been published on the breeding of Traccatichthys bacmeensis; it is not known to have been kept or bred in the aquarium. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a family are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and this species is presumed to follow that pattern, but this is an inference from the family rather than a documented observation. Data on this species is genuinely sparse, and it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Traccatichthys bacmeensis is not established in the aquarium trade and there are no hobby accounts of keeping it. It is not exported, and given its narrow single-stream distribution, wild collection for the trade would be a conservation concern rather than a viable supply source.

Were it ever kept, the general precautions that apply across Nemacheilidae would apply here too: as a scaleless loach it would likely be sensitive to copper and full-strength medication, and as a fast-water stream species it would need cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than the still, warm conditions suited to many community fish. This is a statement of family-level caution, not a documented care record for this particular species.

Conservation

Traccatichthys bacmeensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
