Taxonomy & naming
Traccatichthys pulcher was described by John Treadwell Nichols and Clifford Hillhouse Pope in 1927. Like many of Asia's small stream loaches it has traveled between genera as the family Nemacheilidae has been repeatedly revised: it has appeared in the literature and trade under the old combination Nemacheilus pulcher and also as Micronemacheilus pulcher before settling in the monotypic-leaning genus Traccatichthys, which the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid names — currently recognizes. This kind of generic churn is normal for the family; Nemacheilidae has been split and re-split repeatedly as ichthyologists work through what was once a single catch-all genus, Nemacheilus.
The species sits in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the true loaches (Cobitoidea). It is a distinct lineage from the spined botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra loaches) and from the hillstream loaches of Balitoridae/Gastromyzontidae — despite the trade name "hillstream loach," which is a common-name coincidence rather than a taxonomic relationship.
Morphology
Traccatichthys pulcher is a slender, elongate loach with a green-gray back and flanks and a paler, yellowish belly, the countershading typical of a fish that spends its life pressed against pale sand and gravel. Its most distinctive field mark is a prominent black spot at the base of the caudal fin, which helps distinguish it from superficially similar stream loaches sharing its range. Reported sizes vary sharply by context: fish commonly seen in the trade and in streams run around 1.5 in, while the maximum recorded length is about 4.5 in SL, suggesting either regional variation or that most individuals seen are simply young.
As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general body plan — a rounded, non-compressed body suited to hugging fast current, small paired barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the substrate, and the near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin typical of true loaches, which makes the group broadly sensitive to medication. Details of an erectile suborbital spine specific to this species are not confirmed in available sources; unlike the botiid loaches, most nemacheilids lack the prominent under-eye spine that gives that family its old name of "spined loaches," though the group is best handled gently regardless.
Habitat
The species is native to river drainages of Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland and to Hainan Island, with its type locality on Hainan. This places it within the subtropical stream systems of southern China, where nemacheilid loaches typically occupy medium to fast-flowing water running over sand and gravel substrates — clear, well-oxygenated streams rather than still or heavily vegetated backwaters.
Available temperature data point to a cooler, subtropical regime rather than a warm tropical one: reported aquarium and habitat temperatures run from about 69–75 °F, with a neutral-to-slightly-alkaline pH around 7.0–7.6 and medium water hardness. This is meaningfully cooler than the warm lowland rivers typical of many Southeast Asian loaches, and keepers should treat it as a subtropical stream fish rather than default to standard tropical-tank temperatures.
Feeding
As a nemacheilid stone loach, Traccatichthys pulcher forages along the streambed for small invertebrates — the general pattern for the family is picking insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey from among sand and gravel in flowing water. In the aquarium it takes standard prepared foods readily, supplemented with live or frozen offerings such as Daphnia, bloodworms and Mysis shrimp, which more closely match its natural micro-predatory diet.
Feeding should account for its bottom-oriented habits: sinking foods that reach the substrate rather than flake left to drift are the better match for how this species actually forages, and a varied diet including some live or frozen invertebrate food supports condition and colour.
Mating
Documented information on courtship and sexing in Traccatichthys pulcher is sparse. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been established in the sources available, and as with many small nemacheilid stream loaches, the species has not been closely studied for reproductive behaviour in the wild or in captivity.
What is known fits the general pattern for stone and brook loaches: reproduction in this family is not built around pairing, courtship display or nest preparation but around simple, current-triggered egg-scattering, typically associated with rising water and increased flow. Nothing in the available sources suggests any deviation from that pattern for this species, but firm confirmation is lacking — this is one of the many nemacheilids whose breeding biology is essentially undocumented.
Breeding
Traccatichthys pulcher is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium. The general breeding mode for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry — a pattern shared with botiid and hillstream loaches but distinct from the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups.
Given the lack of any confirmed captive spawning reports for this species, aquarists should treat it as effectively unbred in the hobby. Specimens in the trade are collected from wild stream populations in China rather than farmed or captive-propagated, which is worth keeping in mind when assessing collection pressure on a range-restricted species.
In the aquarium
Traccatichthys pulcher is described as a peaceful species that may nip at tankmates or each other occasionally, and it does best kept in a group rather than singly — a common pattern among small stream loaches that shoal loosely in the wild. A tank should replicate its native medium-to-fast-flowing stream habitat: sand and gravel substrate, strong filtration or a powerhead for current, and cool, well-oxygenated, neutral-to-slightly-alkaline water rather than the warm, soft, acidic conditions suited to many tropical loaches.
Being a near-scaleless or fine-scaled true loach, it should be treated with the same caution given to other members of the group when it comes to medication — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard fish medicines carry more risk for loaches than for scaled fish, so a cautious, reduced-dose approach is prudent. Feed a mix of sinking prepared foods and occasional live or frozen invertebrates, and size the tank and flow to a genuine cool-stream setup rather than a standard warm community aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Traccatichthys pulcher in 2011 and classified it as Least Concern, on the basis that the species is widespread and not believed to be declining at a rate that would qualify it for a threatened category.
Even so, a Least Concern rating for a range-limited stream endemic of Guangdong and Hainan is not the same as "secure from all pressure" — river and stream systems across southern China face ongoing pressure from damming, pollution and land-use change, and specimens entering the aquarium trade are wild-collected rather than farmed. As with many small, poorly studied stream fishes, a favourable status can mask thin underlying data, and continued monitoring of its native drainages is warranted.
