Taxonomy & naming
Anostomus longus was described by Jacques Géry in 1961 and placed in the genus Anostomus, part of the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes. The type locality is the Río Nucuray, a tributary of the Río Marañón in the upper Amazon basin of Peru, in the vicinity of Concordia.
The genus Anostomus contains a handful of similarly slender, elongated headstanders best known in the aquarium trade through A. anostomus and A. ternetzi; A. longus is a less commonly encountered member of the group, and comprehensive population-level taxonomic review appears limited, consistent with its current Data Deficient status. The genus name and family both derive from the Greek for "upward mouth," a nod to the group's characteristic feeding posture rather than any anatomical oddity of the jaws themselves.
Morphology
Anostomus longus has the elongated, torpedo-like body typical of its genus — a slim, laterally compressed profile built for holding position in current rather than for bursts of speed. FishBase records a maximum size of 4 in standard length, making it a modestly sized headstander rather than one of the larger, more heavily built characins in the wider Serrasalmidae-adjacent characin assemblage.
Detailed published descriptions of colour pattern and fin morphology specific to this species are sparse in the available sources; as in other Anostomus, the mouth is angled upward and forward, an adaptation that lets the fish graze surfaces while holding its body at a steep, head-down angle.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Amazon basin in Peru, with its type locality on the Río Nucuray, a tributary of the Río Marañón near Concordia. This places it in headwater stream habitat typical of the region — small to moderate forest streams under dense canopy cover.
Peruvian Amazon headwater streams in this part of the basin are typically strongly acidic, with reported pH in the range of roughly 3.8–4.9, and tend to run a degree or two cooler than the larger river channels they feed, owing to shading from the forest canopy. Whether A. longus specifically favours blackwater or clearwater reaches within this system is not established in the available sources, and its full range within Peru is not well documented beyond the type locality area.
Feeding
Anostomus species are grazers and aufwuchs feeders, cropping algae and biofilm from wood, rock and plant surfaces while angled head-down in the genus's characteristic oblique feeding posture. In the wider genus, breeding accounts describe pairs forming in densely vegetated water, with the male chasing and nipping the female as a prelude to spawning — a pattern typical of egg-scattering characins rather than one involving a distinct courtship display or nest-building.

At a modest maximum of around 4 in, Anostomus longus does not require the enormous tanks that some of its Serrasalmidae-family relatives do, but it should still be given a long, well-planted aquarium with driftwood and rockwork to graze, plus open swimming space consistent with its streamlined body. Water should be kept soft and acidic, reflecting the strongly acidic headwater streams of its native range, and reasonably warm given its Amazonian origin, though precise temperature and pH targets specific to this species are not established in the available sources.
As with other Anostomus, keepers should be cautious about tankmates: several species in this genus are known to be territorial and to nip the fins and scales of other fish, particularly as they mature, so slow-moving or long-finned tankmates are a poor match. A varied, vegetable-rich diet with occasional protein and driftwood or rock to graze will help keep this grazing species in good condition, and soft plants should be expected to take some damage from its browsing.
