Taxonomy & naming
Anostomus ternetzi was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1949. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Anostomus, a small group of elongate, torpedo-bodied characins characterised by an upturned, oblique mouth and the head-down grazing posture that gives the family its common name. The genus is currently placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the governing authority for valid names, and no revision has moved this species out of Anostomus.
Anostomus ternetzi is one of several similarly built Anostomus species kept in the hobby alongside the more widely traded striped headstander (A. anostomus) and A. taeniatus, and the three are sometimes confused at a glance; reliable identification rests on the number and placement of dark longitudinal stripes and finer proportional differences in body depth. The genus name itself, discussed further below, references the fish's signature swimming angle.
Morphology
The body is elongate and roughly cylindrical, tapering toward a moderately forked tail, with the classic Anostomus profile: a pointed snout, an upturned mouth positioned almost at the tip of the head, and eyes set well forward, all adaptations for picking food from surfaces above the fish as it hangs at an angle. SeriouslyFish and FishBase both give a maximum length of roughly 4–5 in, a modest size for the family and one that should be taken as the honest adult figure rather than assuming further growth.
Colouration follows the general Anostomus pattern of dark longitudinal stripes running along a paler, often yellowish-to-olive body, with the exact stripe count and contrast used to separate this species from its close relatives. As in other headstanders, the fins are typically unremarkable in colour compared with the body pattern, and there is no documented external difference between the sexes beyond body girth in well-conditioned, mature fish.
Habitat
Anostomus ternetzi is native to the Orinoco river system spanning Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, and it also occurs in coastal drainages further east across Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Within that range it inhabits river channels and associated habitats where it grazes algae and biofilm from submerged wood, rock and other hard surfaces, a lifestyle reflected in its oblique, head-down feeding posture.
Water conditions across its range are warm and span a fairly wide chemistry window: SeriouslyFish records a temperature range of roughly 68–82 °F, pH of about 5.5–7.5 and hardness from very soft to moderately hard (18–268 ppm), indicating a species that tolerates a broad range of South American river conditions rather than one confined to extreme soft, acidic blackwater.
Feeding
Anostomus ternetzi is a grazer, spending much of its active time rasping algae and biofilm from wood, rock and other surfaces in its characteristic head-down stance, and FishBase notes it also takes aquatic plant material and insects in the wild. SeriouslyFish describes it more broadly as a herbivorous omnivore, combining plant grazing with opportunistic feeding on small invertebrates.
In the aquarium this translates to a diet built around vegetable matter — blanched spinach, lettuce, cucumber or courgette, and quality algae wafers — supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. Because it will also graze soft aquarium plants when vegetable matter is in short supply, keepers should offer enough dedicated plant-based food to keep it off the decor, and choose hardier plant species if grazing pressure becomes an issue.

Anostomus ternetzi is an active, mid-to-upper-water fish that needs swimming space and good water movement more than it needs a heavily decorated tank, though driftwood and rock offer valuable grazing surfaces and sightline breaks. SeriouslyFish is explicit that this species is highly aggressive toward its own kind: it should either be kept as the sole individual of its species among suitably robust tankmates, or in a proper group of six or more in a large aquarium, since small numbers concentrate aggression on the weakest fish rather than diffusing it.
Water should be kept warm, in the roughly 68–82 °F range documented for the species, with soft-to-moderately-hard, mildly acidic-to-neutral chemistry (pH around 5.5–7.5) and strong filtration given its active metabolism. Offer regular vegetable-based feeding to protect softer aquarium plants from grazing damage, and choose tankmates that will not be intimidated or nipped by a quarrelsome mid-water characin. As with other Anostomus, a secure, well-fitted lid is worth having, since active surface-oriented characins of this build are capable jumpers.

Anostomus ternetzi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across the Orinoco basin and adjacent Guiana coastal drainages without evidence of significant population decline. The species is present in the aquarium trade, supplied via Orinoco- and Guiana-region collection and distribution channels, but the sources reviewed here do not document specific site-level pressures on this species; broader concerns facing Orinoco and Guiana Shield freshwater habitats — deforestation-linked sedimentation, mining impacts and water-quality change — are relevant long-term watch items across the region even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
