Taxonomy & naming
Apareiodon argenteus was described by Carla S. Pavanelli and Heraldo A. Britski in 2003 in Copeia, one of three new Apareiodon species the authors erected from headwater streams of the Tocantins-Araguaia basin in that same paper. The holotype, catalogued as MZUSP 52900 and measuring 3 in standard length, was collected from the basin's upper drainage — cited type localities include the Passa-Treizinho, Cristalino, Claro and Bandeirinha streams.
The genus Apareiodon sits in the family Parodontidae, a small Neotropical group placed within Characiformes and often called the "toothed headstanders" or parodontids for their angled, downturned mouths lined with spatulate, multicusped scraping teeth. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises roughly 30 valid species split across three genera — Parodon, Saccodon and Apareiodon — and identification within the family is genuinely difficult: species are frequently separated on fine details of tooth count, squamation and fin-ray counts rather than obvious external field marks, and Apareiodon argenteus is one of the less-documented members of an already obscure genus.
Morphology
Apareiodon argenteus is a small, elongate, laterally compressed fish; the holotype and the type series place its size firmly in the small-characin range, with the holotype measuring 3 in standard length — there is no published record of it approaching anything close to the larger-bodied characins in this atlas's broader group.
