Taxonomy & naming
Roestes itupiranga was described by Naércio A. Menezes and Vinicius A. Lucena in 1998, with the type locality given as Lago Grande, Itupiranga, on the Rio Tocantins in Pará, Brazil — the source of its species epithet. The genus Roestes sits in the family Acestrorhynchidae, the pike characins, a small group of elongate, big-toothed predatory characiforms that includes the well-known payara genus Hydrolycus; older literature sometimes placed Roestes within a broader Cynodontidae/Characidae arrangement, but the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the current authority for the family placement used here.
Within Roestes, R. itupiranga is distinguished from its congeners R. molossus and R. ogilviei chiefly by anal-fin ray counts — FishBase records 38–41 branched anal-fin rays in R. itupiranga versus 43–47 in R. molossus and 41–43 in R. ogilviei — a fine-grained meristic difference typical of how these superficially similar pike characins are told apart. The species appears to be endemic to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, a distinct distribution from the wider-ranging R. molossus.
Morphology
Roestes itupiranga shares the family's signature build: an elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body designed for burst-speed pursuit rather than manoeuvring, with the mouth armed with prominent, unequal fangs typical of pike characins. FishBase's maximum recorded size for the species is 5.5 in standard length, making it a genuinely small fish by the standards of its predatory relatives — the related payara, Hydrolycus, reaches roughly a metre.
The skin and fin membranes of Roestes and its relatives are notably delicate, a trait shared across the pike-characin and payara lineage; specimens are easily damaged in handling and are prone to panicking and injuring themselves against hard surfaces, a point of practical relevance discussed further under "In the aquarium."
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Tocantins drainage in Pará, Brazil, with its type locality at Lago Grande near the town of Itupiranga — a floodplain lake habitat on this major Amazonian tributary. Available records point to a distribution confined to the Tocantins-Araguaia basin, consistent with the pattern of localized endemism seen in several Roestes and related pike-characin species across South American river systems.
Specific water chemistry data for this species is not documented in the sources reviewed. Related Roestes species inhabit warm, flowing river and floodplain-lake water in the roughly 75–82 °F range typical of lowland Amazonian rivers; this should be treated as an indicative range for the genus rather than a measured figure for R. itupiranga itself.
Feeding
Roestes itupiranga is a piscivore, in keeping with every member of the pike-characin lineage: an ambush or pursuit predator built around a mouth full of fang-like teeth for seizing other fish. Like its larger relatives, it is reasonable to expect it to take live or fresh fish and other meaty prey readily, and to be reluctant or unwilling to accept dry prepared foods — a pattern well documented in related Roestes and Hydrolycus species — though no feeding data specific to this species was found in the sources reviewed.
Any tankmate sharing water with a fish in this genus needs to be too large to be swallowed whole; smaller fish are food, not company.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Roestes itupiranga. Roestes itupiranga is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby, and that absence is appropriate rather than an oversight. Related-genus care information (drawn from payara husbandry, the closest documented analogue) describes pike characins as pursuit predators needing strong current, high dissolved oxygen and very large tanks — hundreds of gallons for the bigger species — plus fragile skin that is easily damaged in handling and a tendency to panic and split the snout against tank glass or hard décor. At 5.5 in maximum, R. itupiranga is smaller than the metre-long payara, but the same fragility and predatory-pursuit behaviour apply, and no reliable, species-specific husbandry protocol exists.
Any tank attempting to house this species would need to prioritise open swimming length, smooth glass and décor with no sharp obstructions, strong flow, and a total absence of tankmates small enough to be prey. Given the lack of established care information and captive-breeding history, this is a fish for a specialist or public-aquarium setting rather than the home hobby, and it should not be acquired on impulse.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Roestes itupiranga as Vulnerable (VU), with the assessment dated November 7, 2018. As a range-restricted endemic of the Tocantins-Araguaia basin — a system that has seen substantial hydroelectric damming, including the Tucuruí Dam not far from the species' type locality near Itupiranga — habitat alteration and fragmentation are the plausible drivers behind that status, consistent with the pressures documented broadly across Tocantins-Araguaia endemic fishes, though the sources reviewed here do not spell out a specific threat narrative for this species.
There is no evidence in the sources reviewed of any aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure does not appear to be a relevant factor; the conservation concern here is squarely about its native river habitat.
