Taxonomy & naming

Apareiodon itapicuruensis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Arthur Henn in 1916, part of the same wave of early-twentieth-century American Museum and Carnegie Museum expeditions that documented much of Brazil's coastal ichthyofauna for the first time. It sits in the genus Apareiodon, one of three genera (with Parodon and Scaphirhynchops-like relatives now split elsewhere) making up the family Parodontidae within Characiformes — a family the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the larger, more familiar tetra and piranha families covered elsewhere in this atlas.

The species epithet itapicuruensis refers to its type locality in the coastal river systems of Bahia State, and the Catalog of Fishes' record for the genus places it specifically among the streams of the Contas and Paraíba do Sul coastal basins of Bahia. Parodontidae as a whole is under-collected and under-studied relative to the showier Serrasalmidae and Characidae covered in this atlas; A. itapicuruensis in particular has not attracted the taxonomic revision attention given to some sister species, and no genus reassignment is indicated by available sources — it remains Apareiodon itapicuruensis.

Morphology

Apareiodon species share a distinctive, elongated, subcylindrical body built for holding position in current, a small subterminal mouth adapted for scraping rather than biting, and a row of close-set, chisel-like teeth used to rasp algae and biofilm from hard surfaces — a feeding apparatus that convergently resembles that of algae-grazing loricariid catfish far more than it resembles a typical characin's. Habitat

Apareiodon itapicuruensis is endemic to the coastal river drainages of Bahia State in northeastern Brazil, associated with the Contas River basin and neighbouring coastal systems rather than the Amazon or Paraná basins that dominate this atlas's other characin entries. Regional freshwater fish inventories of Bahia State document a distinct coastal ichthyofauna of restricted-range endemics in these short, independent drainages running from the Brazilian highlands to the Atlantic, and Parodontidae is represented among them.

Like other Apareiodon, it is presumed to occupy flowing, well-oxygenated stream and river reaches with hard substrate — rock, gravel and submerged wood — that support the algal and biofilm growth it grazes, typical of soft, mildly acidic coastal-drainage streams in this part of Brazil. No specific published water-chemistry data (pH, hardness, exact temperature range) for this species was found in available sources, so those figures should be treated as regional inference rather than a direct measurement.

Feeding

Parodontidae as a family are specialist detritus and biofilm grazers, and this is well documented for the genus: studies of the related Apareiodon affinis in southeastern Brazil confirm a diet dominated by detritus, algae, biofilm, sediment and small amounts of Diptera (fly) larvae picked up incidentally while grazing hard surfaces — a scraping, browsing lifestyle rather than active predation or fruit-and-seed foraging.
