Taxonomy & naming
Caenotropus maculosus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1912. It belongs to the family Chilodontidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a small family of grazing characins distinguished from the closely related Anostomidae (which includes Leporinus and Anostomus) largely by details of jaw and dentition rather than by the head-down feeding posture, which both families share.
The genus Caenotropus currently holds a handful of valid species distributed across northern South America, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for the currently accepted combination. The specific epithet maculosus is straightforward Latin for "spotted" or "full of spots," describing the dark speckled pattern across the body that gives the species its common name, the spotted headstander.
Morphology
Caenotropus maculosus is a modest-sized, elongate characin with the sloped, blunt-snouted head typical of headstanders, adapted for grazing at a downward angle against submerged wood and substrate. FishBase records a maximum size of 4.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller and more manageable members of the broader headstander/anostomid group compared to the much larger, more territorial Leporinus species.
Colouration is a silvery to brownish base overlaid with irregular dark blotches and speckling along the flanks — the "maculosus" pattern — which along with the fins helps it blend into leaf litter and shaded understory habitat. Sexes are not reliably distinguished externally; see "Mating" below.
Habitat
The species is native to the Guiana Shield drainages of northern South America: the Cuyuni River basin in Venezuela, the Essequibo and Cuyuni rivers in Guyana, the Corantijn River shared by Suriname and Guyana, and the Marowijne-Maroni River shared by Suriname and French Guiana. It is a freshwater, demersal fish, living near the bottom in river channels and associated habitats within these systems rather than in open water.
Aquarium care sources describe conditions consistent with soft, slightly acidic Guiana Shield blackwater-influenced rivers: a pH in roughly the 6.0–7.5 range, soft to moderately hard water (around 5–15 dGH), and warm tropical temperatures of about 72–82 °F. Structure — driftwood, leaf litter and plants — appears important both as grazing surface and as cover, matching the shy, retiring behaviour reported for the species in captivity.
Feeding
Caenotropus maculosus is a grazer and aufwuchs feeder. FishBase's trophic-level estimate (2.9±0.2) places it as broadly herbivorous-to-detritivorous, and general accounts of headstander ecology describe an omnivorous grazing diet of algae, biofilm, small invertebrates and detritus, gleaned by working over submerged wood, rock and substrate in its characteristic head-down posture.
In the aquarium, keepers report it taking sinking pellets and vegetable matter readily, along with occasional frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp. As with other grazing characins, a diet skewed too heavily toward protein and too light on vegetable matter is worth avoiding; soft-leaved plants in the tank may also be grazed.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Caenotropus maculosus is not documented in the sources available. General accounts of headstander reproduction describe substrate spawning, with eggs deposited among plants or fine substrate rather than any form of nest-building, mouthbrooding or bubble-nest construction — but detailed pairing and courtship behaviour for this particular species is not recorded. No reliable external sexual dimorphism is documented for the species; sexes are not distinguished by colour or fin shape in the available literature.
Breeding
Caenotropus maculosus is, so far as the available sources indicate, an egg-scattering species typical of headstanders, with eggs released over or among substrate and vegetation and no parental care described. Breeding of this species in home aquaria is rarely, if ever, documented — general headstander and anostomid accounts note that some Leporinus species have been bred or farmed, but the spotted headstander itself has no established aquarium-breeding record in the sources reviewed here. Prospective breeders should treat this as a species that has not been reliably reproduced in captivity rather than assume any specific protocol will work.
In the aquarium
Caenotropus maculosus stays genuinely small for a headstander-type fish — under 4.5 in — which makes it far more tractable in a home aquarium than the larger, more territorial Leporinus and Anostomus species that share the head-down grazing posture but grow much bigger and can turn into persistent fin-nippers with age. Care guides describe it as a shy, peaceful grazer best kept in a group of six or more, given a well-planted, well-decorated tank with driftwood and subdued lighting to feel secure; a minimum around 30 US gallons is cited, with 50 gallons or more recommended for a proper community setup.
The species is described as sensitive to poor water quality and organic waste, doing best in a mature, well-established, well-filtered aquarium rather than a newly cycled one. Soft, slightly acidic water in the 72–82 °F range, matching its Guiana Shield origins, is recommended. Because it grazes on algae and biofilm and takes vegetable foods, it fits well into a peaceful, plant-friendly community rather than a predatory or boisterous setup.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Caenotropus maculosus as Least Concern in 2020. Its range across the Cuyuni, Essequibo, Corantijn and Marowijne-Maroni river systems of the Guiana Shield covers a relatively undeveloped and sparsely populated part of South America compared to the heavily impacted Amazon and Paraná basins, which likely contributes to its currently secure status. The species does not appear to be a significant target of commercial fisheries or large-scale aquarium collection, and no major threats are identified in the sources reviewed here; long-term pressures common to Guiana Shield rivers, such as mining-related sedimentation, remain a general watch item for the region's freshwater fauna.
