Taxonomy & naming
Catoprion absconditus was formally described in 2020 by Mateussi, Melo & Oliveira as part of a molecular delimitation and taxonomic revision of the genus Catoprion. Until that revision, every specimen matching this species' range and appearance had been identified as Catoprion mento, the wimple piranha described by Cuvier in 1819 — meaning C. absconditus had been misidentified and folded into its sister species for 201 years before genetic and morphological analysis separated them. The specific epithet absconditus is Latin for "hidden" or "concealed", a direct reference to that long taxonomic concealment.
The genus Catoprion sits within Serrasalmidae, the piranha, pacu and silver-dollar family, inside the order Characiformes. Catoprion is a small, distinctive genus of specialist scale-eaters set apart from the flesh-eating true piranhas (Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus) by its protruding lower jaw and scale-rasping dentition, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for the currently valid split between C. absconditus and C. mento. C. absconditus is distinguished from C. mento by a combination of molecular markers and subtle morphological characters including meristic (scale and fin-ray count) differences; it carries 85–94 perforated scales along the lateral line.
Morphology
Catoprion absconditus has the laterally compressed, diamond-shaped outline typical of the piranha family, with FishBase recording a maximum length of 5.5 in standard length for males and unsexed specimens — noticeably smaller than the roughly 6 in SL reported for its sister species C. mento. The most distinctive feature of the genus is the jaw: the lower jaw projects forward and upward past the upper jaw, an adaptation that lets the fish approach a target fish from below or behind and rasp scales from its flank in a rapid strike, rather than biting off flesh the way a true piranha does.
As with its congener, the body is silvery and laterally flattened, with the compressed, high-backed profile shared across Serrasalmidae. Reliable field separation from C. mento rests on the molecular and meristic characters used in the 2020 description rather than on any single obvious external mark, which is exactly why the two species went unseparated for two centuries.
Habitat
Catoprion absconditus is known from the central and eastern Amazon river system in Brazil and from tributaries of the Essequibo River in Guyana, placing it firmly within the Neotropical lowland river systems of northern South America. FishBase classifies its climate zone as tropical, consistent with warm, seasonally flooded Amazonian and Guianan river habitat.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to C. absconditus was not found in the cached sources; congener Catoprion mento is documented from soft, mildly acidic water (roughly pH 5.8–6.5) in the wild, and a comparable range is a reasonable proxy for this closely related, similarly distributed species, though it should be treated as an inference from the genus rather than a confirmed figure for C. absconditus itself.
Feeding
Catoprion absconditus is a lepidophage — a specialist scale-eater — a feeding strategy shared with its sister species and one of the more unusual diets in the piranha family. Rather than pursuing prey to kill or maim it, the fish uses its protruding lower jaw to strike a passing fish and rasp scales from its body, an approach that lets it exploit an abundant, self-renewing food source (scales regrow) without the energetic cost of subduing prey outright.
In captivity, congener care information indicates that Catoprion accepts a range of meaty foods once established — chopped prawn, mussel, lancefish and other meaty items — as a substitute for wild scale-rasping behaviour, though newly imported or wild-caught individuals can be reluctant feeders and may need live or fresh foods to transition onto prepared diets.
Mating
No spawning or courtship behaviour specific to Catoprion absconditus was found in the cached sources. Reporting on the closely related C. mento notes that breeding in this genus is unreported in aquaria, and general serrasalmid biology — nest-guarding true piranhas aside — gives no confirmed courtship description for Catoprion. Data on this species is sparse and no unverified account is offered here.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the aquarium for Catoprion absconditus or its congener C. mento, and no husbandry-scale spawning account exists in the cached sources. Given the genus's position within Serrasalmidae, a substrate-spawning mode broadly similar to that of the true piranhas (Pygocentrus, Serrasalmus) would not be surprising, but this is speculative extrapolation rather than a documented fact for Catoprion, so it is not asserted here. In the aquarium
Catoprion absconditus stays notably compact for a piranha-family fish, topping out around 5.5 in SL, so it does not demand the very large tanks that true piranhas or pacus eventually require — but its scale-eating habit still makes stocking decisions the central design question. Any tankmate with visible scales is a potential target for rasping strikes, so this is not a fish to house with delicate or slow-moving companions; it is best considered alongside other robust, fast-moving characins that can avoid its strikes, or kept alone.
Congener care guidance describes adult Catoprion as largely solitary, with juveniles more tolerant of grouping and females becoming increasingly aggressive toward males as they mature — behaviour worth anticipating if keeping more than one individual. A single adult is reported to do reasonably in a 125-litre (48×15×12 inch) tank, with dense cover and open swimming space both valued. As with other Serrasalmidae, always transfer this fish by container rather than net, and check local regulations before acquiring any piranha-family species, since several jurisdictions restrict or ban the family regardless of individual species' actual risk profile.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Catoprion absconditus as Least Concern on 1 November 2023, with the assessment noting a minimum population doubling time under 15 months — indicative of a species capable of recovering quickly from any localised pressure. This LC status reflects the species only recently being formally recognised as distinct from C. mento, and the general absence of any known major threat across its central-to-eastern Amazon and Essequibo range.
As with many recently split Amazonian species, dedicated population studies specific to C. absconditus (as opposed to the combined historical record shared with C. mento before 2020) are limited, so its conservation picture will likely sharpen as more targeted surveys accumulate now that the two species are recognised separately.
