Catoprion mento was described by Georges Cuvier in 1819, making it one of the earliest-named piranhas in the scientific literature. It sits in the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and it is the sole member of its genus: Catoprion is monotypic, with mento the only currently recognised valid species. That taxonomic isolation reflects real anatomical distance from the shoaling, flesh-biting piranhas of Pygocentrus and Serrasalmus; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) continues to treat Catoprion as a distinct lineage defined largely by its unique jaw architecture.
The common names "wimple piranha" and "wimpel piranha" refer to the protruding, medieval-headdress-like profile of the lower jaw. Sexes can be told apart in mature fish by the anal fin: males develop a convex (bulging) leading edge to the fin, while females retain a straighter anal-fin margin — one of the more reliable external dimorphism cues among the piranhas.
Morphology
The wimple piranha is modest in size for a piranha, reaching a maximum of around 6 in standard length, and it carries the familiar deep, laterally compressed, silver-bodied piranha outline with a dark humeral spot behind the gill cover. What sets it apart immediately is the lower jaw: it projects forward and slightly upward into a distinctive, banana-curved profile, giving the head a jutting, underslung look quite unlike the blunt, scissor-jawed profile of Pygocentrus or Serrasalmus.
That jaw is not cosmetic — it is the core of a specialised feeding apparatus. Functional-morphology studies of the species describe scale-feeding strikes as high-speed, open-mouth ramming attacks, in which the jaw geometry is oriented to graze scales from a fleeing fish's flank rather than to clamp down and hold. Males and females look broadly similar in body shape and colour, with the clearest external difference being the convex anal-fin margin of mature males noted above.
Habitat
Catoprion mento is widely distributed across northern and central South America, with records from Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil and Bolivia, placing it across parts of the Orinoco and Amazon drainage systems and associated Guianan rivers. Within that range it occupies the same general lowland river, floodplain and tributary habitats used by other Serrasalmidae, typically in the company of the smaller shoaling fish whose scales make up its diet.
Water conditions reported for the species are warm and soft to neutral: roughly 73–79 °F, pH 5.8–6.5, and very soft hardness (around 1–5 dH). Feeding
Catoprion mento is the classic example of lepidophagy — obligate scale-eating — among the piranhas. Rather than killing prey outright, it rams other fish in fast, open-mouth strikes and rasps scales from their flanks, a strategy that functional-morphology research shows is used from early development through adulthood rather than as a passing juvenile stage the way some other characins briefly exploit scales. In the wild it also takes small fish outright and attacks the fins of larger fish, in addition to its signature scale-feeding.
In the aquarium this specialised diet cannot be replicated directly, so keepers substitute meaty foods: chopped prawn, mussel, lancefish and other marine or freshwater meaty items are reported as accepted substitutes. Because it is a natural predator of smaller fishes' scales and fins, any tankmates are at real risk of being harassed or stripped, which is the central reason the species is generally recommended to be kept alone.
Mating

Catoprion mento is not a fish for a community tank or even a typical piranha-shoal setup. Water should be kept warm (73–79 °F), soft and mildly acidic to neutral (pH roughly 5.8–6.5, hardness 1–5 dH), and the species is noted as sensitive to water conditions, so stability and water quality deserve more attention than with hardier piranha relatives. Diet in captivity relies on meaty substitutes — chopped prawn, mussel, lancefish and similar foods — rather than live feeder fish, which are best avoided on general disease and nutrition grounds. As with all piranhas, check local and state law before acquiring one, since piranhas are restricted or banned in many jurisdictions, and never release a piranha into open water.
