Characidium bimaculatum is a small, slender darter characin from coastal river systems of northeastern Brazil, reaching barely 2.5 in and living less like a typical mid-water tetra than like a miniature goby — perching on the substrate, propped on its pectoral and pelvic fins, and darting a few centimetres between rests rather than swimming continuously. It belongs to Crenuchidae, the family that also holds the prized, gentle sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), but Characidium itself is the stream-bed branch of that family: an unshowy, honest micro-predator that hunts tiny invertebrates off gravel and leaf litter rather than grazing flake at the surface. In the aquarium it is a calm, easily overlooked nano fish for a planted or leaf-litter tank with a group of its own kind and clean, well-oxygenated water — a species that rewards a keeper who watches the bottom of the tank rather than the middle.

Taxonomy & naming

Characidium bimaculatum was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1941. It sits in the genus Characidium, within the family Crenuchidae (the South American darters and sailfin characins), in the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; this article follows that placement and does not attempt to revise it.

Characidium is a large and taxonomically active genus of small, bottom-associated characins often called "darters" for their perch-and-dart locomotion, a term borrowed from the unrelated North American darter fishes (Percidae) that show convergent behaviour on stream substrates. Species-level identification within Characidium relies heavily on fine details of colour pattern, scale counts and fin-ray counts, and museum material for this species shows a size range of roughly 1–1.5 in standard length, consistent with a genuinely small-bodied species even by darter-characin standards.

Morphology

Characidium bimaculatum has the elongate, subcylindrical body typical of Characidium: a slim, torpedo-like profile with a flattened belly that lets the fish rest directly on the substrate, and a head that is proportionally blunt compared with the pointed snouts of open-water tetras. FishBase records a maximum length of 2.5 in standard length, making this one of the true nano species in the darter-characin group — smaller than many of the well-known Crenuchus and Poecilocharax sailfin species kept in the hobby.

The common thread across Characidium species, and the source of the "two-spot" implied by the specific epithet bimaculatum ("two-spotted"), is a pattern of dark blotches or bars along the flank rather than the iridescent, showy colouration of many tetras — camouflage suited to a fish that spends its life pressed against gravel, sand and leaf litter rather than swimming in open water. Habitat

Mating

Specific courtship behaviour for Characidium bimaculatum has not been documented in the sources available for this article, and the species' small size and coastal-Brazil distribution mean it receives far less attention from aquarists and researchers than the larger, more widely traded Crenuchidae. It is a bottom-oriented fish, not a shoaling mid-water swimmer, so tank furnishing matters more than tank volume: a sand or fine-gravel base, driftwood, leaf litter and moderate water flow let it behave naturally, resting and darting rather than schooling in open water. Darter characins are generally recommended in a group of five or more of their own kind, kept with calm tankmates that will not out-compete a small, deliberate feeder at mealtime.

Water should be kept in the species' documented comfort range of roughly 72–79 °F, with hobby sources for darter characins generally citing a pH around 6.0–7.5 — moderate and not the extreme soft blackwater sometimes assumed for small Brazilian characins. Because the species is a genuine micro-predator that may initially refuse flake, new keepers should be prepared to offer small live or frozen foods rather than assuming it will adapt to standard tetra fare from day one.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Characidium bimaculatum on 7 November 2018 and classified it as Least Concern. This reflects its occurrence across a range of coastal stream systems in northeastern Brazil rather than a single highly restricted locality, though as with many small coastal-basin endemics, comprehensive population trend data is limited compared with wide-ranging Amazonian species.

The species is not a significant part of the aquarium trade, which limits collection pressure, but its coastal Brazilian streams face the general pressures common to the region — deforestation-linked sedimentation, water diversion and habitat modification near populated coastal areas.
