Taxonomy & naming
Characidium boavistae was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1915 from material collected at Boa Vista on the Rio Branco, a major tributary of the Rio Negro in Roraima, Brazil — the source of both its species epithet and one of its common names. It sits in the genus Characidium, the true darters, within the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters and sailfin characins, a Characiformes lineage that also includes the more colourful, cave-spawning genera Crenuchus and Poecilocharax.
Characidium is a large genus by characin standards, with dozens of described species spread across the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná-Paraguay and Guianas drainages, and many of its members are difficult to tell apart without close examination of scale counts, fin-ray formulas and colour-pattern details — a common situation across the genus rather than a quirk of this species. C. boavistae sits toward the small end of the genus's size range (some Characidium reach closer to 6 in), and as with much of the genus, published biological data on this particular species is sparse outside of distribution and basic morphometric records.
Morphology
Characidium boavistae is a slender, elongate, cylindrical characin, reaching a documented maximum of only about 2 in standard length — small even by the standards of a genus that runs to nano-sized fish. Like other darters, it lacks the deep, laterally compressed body typical of shoaling tetras; instead it has a torpedo-shaped profile suited to holding position against current and making short, controlled dashes rather than sustained swimming.
Colouration follows the genus's typical cryptic pattern: a pale to olive-brown body, often with a dark lateral stripe or a broken series of blotches running from head to tail, and subtle banding on the caudal fin — patterning that camouflages the fish against sand and gravel substrate. The pelvic and pectoral fins are proportionally large and are used actively to prop the fish at an angle on the bottom, the signature "darter" resting posture that gives the genus its common name and distinguishes it at a glance from open-water tetras.
Habitat
Characidium boavistae is native to northern South America, recorded from tributaries of Lake Maracaibo, the Orinoco River basin and northern Amazon tributaries, with its type locality at Boa Vista on the Rio Branco in Brazil. Across this range it occupies flowing freshwater streams and river margins, living a benthopelagic lifestyle close to the bottom rather than in open midwater.
Like other Characidium, it favours sand- or gravel-bottomed stretches with moderate-to-strong current, where it can perch in the flow and dart out after drifting prey. Water across the genus's range in general is warm and mildly acidic to neutral, in the region of pH 5.5–7.0 and 22–28 degrees Celsius, though detailed water-chemistry data specific to C. boavistae's collection sites has not been located; keepers should treat these as genus-typical figures rather than site-verified numbers for this species.
Feeding
Characidium boavistae is a micro-predator, not a grazer or a flake-eater. In the wild it hunts chironomid midge larvae, small aquatic and terrestrial insects and other tiny invertebrates drifting or crawling along the substrate, darting from its resting position to snap up prey and returning to a new perch — a stop-start foraging style rather than continuous cruising.
In the aquarium this translates directly: the species does best on small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp and other small crustaceans, and it often ignores dry flake altogether or eats it only reluctantly. Feeding should be delivered near the bottom, in or near the current, to match how the fish actually forages rather than scattered across the surface.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented for Characidium boavistae specifically; the available husbandry information is drawn from Characidium and the broader darter-characin group rather than from targeted studies of this species. In the genus generally, conditioning fish on a rich diet of small live and frozen foods and softening and slightly acidifying the water is reported to bring individuals into spawning condition, with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss providing both a courting site and, later, egg cover.
No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species; as with many small characins, gravid females may appear fuller-bodied when carrying eggs, but there is no established colour or fin difference used to sex the species with confidence.
Breeding
Characidium species are egg-scatterers rather than nest-builders or mouthbrooders: in a conditioned pair or group, eggs are broadcast over and among fine-leaved plant thickets on the substrate rather than deposited in a defended pit or cave, distinguishing them from their cave-spawning Crenuchidae relatives Crenuchus and Poecilocharax, which show brief male care of a small clutch. Hobby accounts of the wider darter-characin group describe soft, acidic water and dense plant cover as the trigger and setting for spawning, with the adults offering no meaningful parental care once eggs are laid — scattered eggs and, later, fry are vulnerable to being eaten by the adults themselves if not separated.
Species-specific breeding reports for Characidium boavistae are scarce, and it should be treated as a fish that is only occasionally bred in the hobby rather than one with an established, repeatable protocol. Keepers attempting it should remove adults after spawning and expect free-swimming fry to need very small first foods such as infusoria before graduating to baby brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Characidium boavistae is a genuinely nano fish — a maximum of roughly 2 in means it never outgrows a modestly sized aquarium, but its needs are specific rather than generic. A tank of around 20 US gal upward with a sand or fine gravel bottom and moderate-to-strong water movement suits its bottom-perching, current-oriented habits far better than a still, heavily planted community tank. It is a capable jumper, so tight-fitting cover is essential.
The species is shy, particularly in small numbers, and does best kept in a group of eight or more of its own kind, or as the sole focus of a quiet species tank; it can be nervous and easily outcompeted by faster, bolder tankmates at feeding time. Because it is a micro-predator that often refuses flake, keepers need to commit to regular small live or frozen foods rather than expecting it to adapt to a standard community diet. It is rarely available in the aquarium trade, and most individuals seen in the hobby are traded simply as "darter characin" or "Characidium sp." without species-level identification.
Conservation
Characidium boavistae is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting a range that spans Lake Maracaibo tributaries, the Orinoco basin and northern Amazon tributaries, with low documented vulnerability to fishing pressure and no evidence of a range-wide population decline. It is not a target of significant commercial fisheries and, unlike some ornamental characins, does not appear to support a substantial aquarium export trade, which limits collection pressure specific to this species.
As with much of the wider Characidium genus, detailed population trend data is limited, and the Least Concern status rests primarily on its broad distribution rather than on close monitoring. General pressures facing Orinoco and northern Amazon freshwater habitats — deforestation, water-quality change and hydrological disruption — remain long-term watch items for the region even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
