Taxonomy & naming
Gilbertolus alatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1878, originally placed in the genus Anacyrtus as Anacyrtus alatus before later authors moved it to Gilbertolus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists the species in the family Acestrorhynchidae, the pike characins — a small group of slim-bodied, big-toothed predatory characins that also includes the genus Acestrorhynchus and the payara genus Hydrolycus, all built around the same pursuit-predator body plan.
A subspecies, Gilbertolus alatus maracaiboensis Schultz, 1943, was described from a caño roughly half a mile west of Sinamaica in Zulia, Venezuela, within the Maracaibo basin — a reminder that the species' range has been sampled at fairly fine geographic resolution even though it remains obscure outside specialist and aquarium-trade circles.
Morphology
Gilbertolus alatus has the classic pike-characin silhouette: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body built for short bursts of speed rather than sustained cruising, with a pointed head and a jaw armed with well-developed, forward-facing teeth suited to seizing fish prey. FishBase records a maximum published size of 5.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, with a maximum recorded weight of 44.2 g — a fraction of the size its famous relative the payara reaches, but proportioned the same way.
Colouration follows the same understated, silvery pattern typical of pike characins: a bright, reflective flank suited to open-water ambush and ordinary predator-avoidance camouflage rather than any striking pattern. As with many Acestrorhynchidae, the skin and fins are comparatively delicate, and specimens are prone to injury when handled or confined — a trait shared across the family and directly relevant to how the fish should be kept and moved in captivity.
Habitat
The species is native to the Lago Maracaibo basin and the Río Magdalena drainage, spanning Venezuela and Colombia in northern South America. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish, consistent with a predator that ranges through the water column of rivers and the lake system rather than confining itself to bottom or surface layers.

Aquarium accounts for pike characins and payara in this family note that captive individuals take fish and other meaty foods and that many resist prepared or dry food entirely, preferring live or fresh-frozen fish and prawn. Any tankmate must be too large to be swallowed whole; a fish this size will treat anything it can fit in its mouth as prey.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Gilbertolus alatus in the sources reviewed here. Pike characins as a group are generally understood as open-water spawners tied to river and floodplain cycles rather than nest-builders or mouthbrooders, but that is an inference from the wider family rather than a confirmed observation for this species, and it should be read as such.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Gilbertolus alatus is not established. Aquarium-care sources for its larger relatives in the pike-characin family — including the payara, Hydrolycus — consistently describe breeding as not achieved in home aquaria, and nothing in the available literature suggests this smaller species is any different. Prospective keepers should assume this is a wild-collected or wild-origin fish in the trade, with no aquarium spawning reports to draw on.
Given the lack of data, this account makes no claim about egg type, parental care or fry rearing for the species; any of that would be speculation rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Gilbertolus alatus is a fast, open-water predator, and hobbyist guidance for its close relatives in the Acestrorhynchidae is consistent enough to apply here with appropriate caution: these fish are fragile-skinned and prone to injuring their snouts against tank glass when startled, so a long, unobstructed swimming space and a calm, low-disturbance setup matter more than decor. Tankmates need to be robust, fast, and — critically — too large to be swallowed; general guidance for the family suggests prey-sized fish should be avoided outright, and even substantial tankmates carry some risk from a determined predator.
Because this species tops out at a modest 5.5 in standard length, it does not present the same outgrow-the-tank problem as the payara, but it still needs swimming room, stable water quality and a diet of meaty or live foods, since many pike characins refuse dry food. It is a specialist fish for a keeper prepared to feed it appropriately and house it without cramped, sharp-edged decor that could injure its skin.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Gilbertolus alatus as Least Concern, an assessment from 2014 that reflects the absence of documented major threats or population decline across its Maracaibo-basin and Magdalena-drainage range. FishBase corroborates the Least Concern status.
As with many range-restricted South American characins, the Magdalena basin in particular faces long-term pressure from damming, pollution and habitat degradation, and the Maracaibo basin has its own history of water-quality concerns, but the species itself is not currently flagged as threatened by the assessments reviewed here.
