Taxonomy & naming
Gilbertolus maracaiboensis was described by the American ichthyologist Leonard P. Schultz in 1943, from a type locality in a caño (channel) half a mile west of Sinamaica, in the Maracaibo basin of Estado de Zulia, Venezuela. It was originally named as a subspecies of Gilbertolus alatus Steindachner, 1878 — appearing in older literature as Gilbertolus alatus maracaiboensis — before Menezes & Lucena (1998) elevated it to full species status based on distinguishing morphological characters.
The genus Gilbertolus sits in the family Acestrorhynchidae, the pike characins, a small group of slender predatory characiforms related to the piranhas and pacus within the broader Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Gilbertolus maracaiboensis as the currently valid name, with Schultz's 1943 description as the basis of authorship; GBIF likewise lists it as a confirmed valid species distinct from G. alatus. As with other Acestrorhynchidae, correct identification matters because Gilbertolus is easily confused with the more widespread Acestrorhynchus pike characins that share its predatory, elongated body plan.
Morphology
Gilbertolus maracaiboensis has the classic pike-characin silhouette: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body built for short, explosive bursts of speed rather than sustained cruising. FishBase records a maximum size of 5 in standard length, which makes this species considerably smaller than the payara (Hydrolycus) and some of the larger Acestrorhynchus species that share the family, though it carries the same essential predatory toolkit in miniature: a pointed head and a jaw lined with sharp, interlocking teeth adapted for seizing fast-moving prey.
FishBase lists a trophic level of 3.9 ± 0.7, placing it as an upper-level consumer consistent with a predatory diet. Like other pike characins, its skin and fins are thin and easily damaged, and specimens are prone to injuring themselves against hard surfaces when startled — a trait documented across the family rather than specific to this species, but one that follows directly from its build. Gilbertolus maracaiboensis is a freshwater, benthopelagic species restricted to the Lago Maracaibo basin of Venezuela, near the Colombia border.
