Taxonomy & naming
Hoplias argentinensis was described in 2018 by Rosso, González-Castro, Bogan, Cardoso, Mabragaña, Delpiani and Díaz de Astarloa, based on a holotype (UNMDP 4417, 12 in SL) collected from the Río Coronda, part of the Paraná basin in Santa Fe Province, Argentina. It belongs to the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras and their relatives — within Characiformes, and it is one of several species carved out of the old, broadly defined "Hoplias malabaricus" complex once integrative taxonomic work (combining morphology with genetics) showed that name covered a group of distinct species across South America rather than one wide-ranging species.
The species is diagnosed from its relatives by a combination of meristic characters: 17–19 predorsal scales, 42–43 vertebrae, 20 scales around the caudal peduncle, 41–44 lateral-line scales, a snout width of 18.4–24.9% of standard length, and the absence of brown bands on the lower jaw seen in some congeners. As with other recent Hoplias splits, older literature and trade records from its range may still lump it under the broader "Hoplias malabaricus" name; the Catalog of Fishes now treats H. argentinensis as a distinct, valid species.
Morphology
Hoplias argentinensis has the classic trahira build: a thick, cylindrical, slightly compressed body, a large, broad, flattened head and a wide mouth armed with heavy, conical, unequal teeth suited to gripping and crushing prey rather than slicing it. The holotype measured 12 in standard length, and the genus as a whole is known for large-bodied, powerfully built predators — the type specimen size gives a working reference point for this species' scale, though full adult size range is not well documented.
Diagnostic scale and vertebral counts (17–19 predorsal scales, 42–43 vertebrae, 20 scales around the caudal peduncle, 41–44 lateral-line scales) separate it from other members of the H. malabaricus complex, along with the relatively narrow snout (18.4–24.9% SL) and a lower jaw lacking the brown banding seen in some relatives. Colouration in the wild-caught holotype and specimens is consistent with the mottled brown-and-olive camouflage typical of ambush-hunting Hoplias, which lets the fish disappear against submerged wood and leaf litter while it waits for prey.
Habitat
Hoplias argentinensis is documented from the Paraná–Río de la Plata drainage and neighbouring systems in southern South America, including the Salado-Juramento and Salí-Dulce basins and the Uruguay River basin, spanning southern Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). This is a subtropical-to-warm-temperate part of the continent, notably cooler and more seasonal than the Amazon basin that many aquarium characins come from, and specific water chemistry data for the species has not been reported in the sources reviewed here.
Like other trahiras, it is presumed to favour structurally complex water — submerged wood, marginal vegetation, backwaters and slow reaches — that gives an ambush predator cover to lie in wait. Data on this species' precise habitat preferences within the Paraná system is otherwise sparse in the available literature; conclusions here are drawn cautiously from the genus as a whole rather than from population-specific studies of H. argentinensis.
Feeding
Hoplias argentinensis is confirmed as ichthyophagous — a fish-eating predator — by a 2024 trophic ecology study that found its diet correlates with local prey-fish abundance, with documented prey including Bryconamericus iheringii and Odontesthes bonariensis (Argentine silverside). This fits the trahira pattern of lying still in cover and striking suddenly at passing fish, rather than actively pursuing prey over open water.
In the aquarium, this feeding strategy translates directly: a predator of this build takes meaty foods — whole or cut fish, prawn and similar — far more readily than flake or pellet, and any tankmate small enough to be engulfed should be assumed to be prey rather than company. No aquarium-specific feeding data for this species was found in the cache; the above is inferred from confirmed wild diet and the well-documented feeding ecology of the genus Hoplias generally.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Hoplias argentinensis has been documented in the sources reviewed here — the species was only formally described in 2018, and research to date has focused on taxonomy, morphology and trophic ecology rather than reproduction. Several other Hoplias and the related genus Erythrinus are known to be substrate nest-spawners in which a pair forms around a cleared pit or plant nest, but this has not been confirmed for H. argentinensis specifically, so it should not be assumed.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Hoplias argentinensis has not been documented in the available literature, and the species does not appear to be established in aquarium or aquaculture breeding programmes. Several wolf fish and trahiras in the family Erythrinidae — including other Hoplias and Erythrinus species — are known substrate nest-spawners with a guarding male defending a pit or plant nest and the resulting fry, and many of those relatives are themselves only rarely bred in captivity. Given the complete absence of species-specific breeding data, and the fact that this is a taxonomically young, little-studied split from a wide-ranging complex, this article does not assign a confirmed breeding mode to H. argentinensis — data sparse.
In the aquarium
Hoplias argentinensis is not an established aquarium species and essentially no hobby-keeping data exists for it specifically; what follows is drawn from the well-documented biology of the genus Hoplias, which should be treated as a strong general warning rather than a species-specific care sheet. Wolf fish and trahiras are solitary, heavy-bodied, air-breathing ambush predators with powerful jaws and heavy conical teeth. Large congeners such as H. aimara exceed a metre in length and are genuinely aggressive; even a moderately sized Hoplias is a single-specimen fish that will kill and eat anything it can fit in its mouth, and can inflict a serious bite on a careless keeper.
Anyone considering a fish from this genus should plan for a large, heavily covered, securely lidded tank housing that one fish alone — never a community setup — sized well beyond what a typical characin needs, with every piece of equipment and every interaction with the fish treated with the same caution given to other large predatory ambush fish. Given the total lack of husbandry data for H. argentinensis in particular, and its recent description, this is a species for specialists working from first principles rather than an established care routine, and it should not be acquired on impulse.
Conservation
Hoplias argentinensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2018 and still under active taxonomic and ecological study — the 2024 trophic ecology work on its diet is among the more substantial follow-up research published on it to date.
As a Paraná–Río de la Plata basin endemic (with records extending into the Salado-Juramento, Salí-Dulce and Uruguay basins), the species sits within a heavily used river system subject to damming, water abstraction and agricultural runoff across Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, pressures that are relevant long-term watch items for South American freshwater fish generally even though no assessment yet exists for this species. No population trend or threat data specific to H. argentinensis was found in the sources reviewed here.
