Taxonomy & naming
Hoplias brasiliensis was described by Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, in the same body of work that treated many of the freshwater fishes Spix collected in Brazil during his 1817–1820 expedition. It belongs to the family Erythrinidae — the trahiras and wolf fishes — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Hoplias, whose valid species the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct from the closely related, more slender Erythrinus and Hoplerythrinus.
Hoplias has a long taxonomic history of confusion: for decades most trahiras were lumped under the single wide-ranging name H. malabaricus, and it was only through later revisionary work that a series of geographically restricted species — including H. brasiliensis, native to the coastal drainages of northeastern Brazil rather than the Amazon or Orinoco — were confirmed as distinct. The genus name Hoplias derives from the Greek for "armed" or "weapon", a fitting reference to its heavy dentition; the species epithet brasiliensis simply denotes its Brazilian range.
Morphology
Hoplias brasiliensis has the unmistakable trahira build: an elongated, cylindrical, faintly torpedo-shaped body, a broad flattened head, and a large mouth armed with a set of heavy, conical, canine-like teeth adapted for seizing and holding slippery prey rather than shearing it. FishBase records a maximum size of 8 in standard length for the species, making it a modest member of the genus compared with giants like H. aimara, but still a robust, muscular fish relative to its length.
Colouration is typical of ambush-adapted trahiras — mottled brown, olive and grey tones that break up its outline against submerged wood, leaf litter and root tangles, with a heavier, more solid body and shorter snout distinguishing Hoplias from the more slender, superficially similar Erythrinus and Hoplerythrinus found in the same region. Like other members of the family, it is an air-breathing fish, able to gulp atmospheric oxygen to survive the low-oxygen, sluggish backwaters it favours.
Habitat
Hoplias brasiliensis is restricted to coastal river drainages of northeastern Brazil, with records from the Paraguaçu, Pardo, Jequitinhonha and Contas river systems — a range entirely separate from the Amazon or Orinoco basins that many trahiras occupy. Within these rivers it favours slow-moving stretches, backwaters, and vegetated or root-tangled margins where it can lie motionless and ambush prey rather than pursue it in open water.
FishBase notes the species tolerates a fairly wide temperature range, from roughly 68–79 °F, with reported breeding conditions around 79 °F and pH 6–7.5 — moderately soft, mildly acidic to neutral water consistent with lowland Brazilian coastal streams. As with other Erythrinidae, its air-breathing capacity lets it persist in oxygen-poor pools and slow, vegetation-choked water that would exclude many other predatory fish.
Feeding
Hoplias brasiliensis is a piscivorous ambush predator. FishBase describes it hunting smaller fish and insects, consistent with the genus's general strategy: remain still and camouflaged against cover, then strike explosively at anything that comes within range and is small enough to engulf. Unlike active pursuit predators, trahiras conserve energy between strikes and rely on surprise rather than speed over distance.
In the aquarium this translates to a fish that wants meaty, whole-prey-type foods — fish, prawn and similar fare — and that may show little interest in dry or flake foods. Its mouth and teeth are built for gripping and holding rather than tearing, so feeding should account for a strict carnivore that will treat any tankmate small enough to swallow as a meal.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Hoplias brasiliensis is not well documented in the sources available, but FishBase records that breeding is associated with warmer water, around 79 °F, and a pH of 6 to 7.5 — conditions consistent with a seasonal spawning trigger tied to warming water rather than a fixed calendar event. As in other Hoplias, pairing is likely a brief, localised event around a chosen nest site rather than a shoal-wide behaviour, since the species is fundamentally solitary outside of spawning.
No reliable external sexual dimorphism is documented for this species in the sources reviewed; data is sparse on how males and females can be distinguished outside of breeding condition, and this should not be guessed at.
Breeding
FishBase reports that Hoplias brasiliensis pairs to spawn, with females producing on the order of 10,000 eggs under recorded breeding conditions of about 79 °F and pH 6–7.5. This is broadly consistent with the wolf fish genus's known pattern of substrate nest-spawning, in which a pair — or more specifically the male — establishes and guards a nest site, though the available sources do not confirm the specific parental-care details (which parent guards, for how long, or fry-rearing behaviour) for this species.
As with most Hoplias, captive breeding is not an established or routine hobby practice; this is not a fish bred to any meaningful scale in home aquaria, and the reproductive data available comes from field or aquaculture-style observation rather than aquarist accounts. Prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species and should treat any breeding attempt as unproven territory.
In the aquarium
Hoplias brasiliensis is a predatory specialist, not a community fish. At a maximum recorded size of roughly 8 in SL it is one of the more modestly sized trahiras, but it remains a solitary ambush hunter that will treat any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth as food, and its heavy jaws and teeth make careless handling genuinely risky. It is best kept alone, in a tank sized to its adult length with dense cover — driftwood, root tangles or robust plants — that lets it settle into the still, watchful ambush posture natural to the genus.
As an air-breathing fish, it needs access to the surface and tolerates a range of water conditions, but should be kept in warm, moderately soft, mildly acidic-to-neutral water broadly matching its native coastal Brazilian rivers (roughly 68–79 °F, pH 6–7.5 per FishBase). Feed whole or chunked meaty foods rather than relying on dry foods it may ignore. Given its predatory nature and the general Hoplias reputation for aggression, it should never be mixed with fish it can overpower, and should always be moved and handled with care.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hoplias brasiliensis as Least Concern in an assessment dated 7 November 2018. This reflects a species restricted to several coastal river drainages of northeastern Brazil (the Paraguaçu, Pardo, Jequitinhonha and Contas systems) without documented major population decline, though its range is narrower than that of widespread Amazonian trahiras.
