Taxonomy & naming
Microcharacidium bombioides was described in 2021 by Vieira & Netto-Ferreira in the Canadian Journal of Zoology, as a new species within the small darter-characin genus Microcharacidium. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, a family whose other well-known genera include the shy, blackwater-loving sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax and the more numerous stream-bed darters of Characidium.
The holotype, catalogued as UFRGS 28560, measures just 0.5 in standard length and was collected from Central Amazon drainages in Brazil.
